Does Bornea Have Another Gear?

Bornea lives up to his moniker of “Hurricane”. The Filipino boxer earned the number-one ranking by blitzing his opponents and finishing most of them. He’s the type of boxer in the mold of many Filipino greats like Manny Pacquiao and Nonito Donaire, especially early in their careers. But as they evolved and added more wrinkles to their style, can Bornea do the same?

“Jade is a complete boxer. He can move, he has power, and is a smart fighter,” said Bornea’s coach Ernel Fontanilla to Ring Magazine. “Every fight is not easy. We know Martinez is a pressure fighter, he can throw a lot of punches but I believe Bornea is a very good fighter and stronger than Martinez.”

Of course, Bornea’s coach believes his boxing fighter is a live underdog using the Fernando Martinez vs Jade Bornea odds. And this may be Bornea’s first title fight, but he’s already fought champions in the past.

Bornea bested both Murodjon Akhmadaliev and Kosei Tanaka on his way to winning the 2013 ASBC Asian Confederation Junior Boxing Championships. The former was recently a unified bantamweight champion while the latter became the fastest boxer to win championships in three weight classes.

On top of that, Bornea has trained with Martinez’s old adversary: Ancajas. The former champion has given Bornea insights on Martinez and this could be what swings the momentum to the challenger’s side. The onus is now on Bornea to rise up to the spotlight and reclaim the title back for himself and his country.

Martinez Looks to Be More Than a Champion

In defeating Ancajas twice, Martinez solidified himself as one of the best fighters at 115 pounds. Now, the Argentinian has another goal: to elevate his standing among boxing fans. Juan Francisco Estrada

“This is going to be my first time-fighting in Minneapolis and I hope the fans know that I’m coming to put on a show for them,” said Martinez to Boxing Scene. “My goal isn’t just to win, it’s to show that I’m getting better and that I’m on my way to my goal of unifying the titles.”

These are bold promises, especially with the latter. There are three other champions Martinez can challenge from the WBA’s Joshua Franco (who also fights this Saturday) to the WBO’s Junto Nakatani. Then there is the legend himself, Juan Francisco Estrada who holds the WBC title.

But before Martinez can look to these ambitious goals, he has to turn Bornea back. The Fernando Martinez vs Jade Bornea odds imply he has a three-in-four chance (76.6%) of doing it. He’s never tasted defeat and has delivered both as the underdog and the favorite in his two fights with Ancajas.

But perhaps Martinez’s style, which is to be the aggressor, can make him susceptible to defeat. He is fighting someone just like him and someone a bit bigger – Bornea is an inch taller with a three-inch reach advantage. The challenger is also a more experienced professional.

Still, the boxing odds expect Martinez to defend. And at the least, he will not go down quietly. Win or lose, the champion will bring the fire and the Minneapolis fans will not be disappointed.
