Nina Hughes vs Katie Healy Odds: Cementing Their Status

Champion Versus Champion, Bout Flying Under the Radar

Hughes Comfortably Favored Over Healy

Nina Hughes puts her WBA bantamweight title on the line against a new opponent in Katie Healy. Now, instead of a tight contest with Shannon Courtenay, the lines favor Hughes by quite a margin at -700. But the Nina Hughes vs Katie Healy odds can’t entirely be trusted. Healy is a champion up a weight class and is the bigger boxer. This is no walk in the park for Hughes.

Healy Gets Golden Opportunity as a Replacement

Just last summer, Katie Healy won the biggest match of her life when she dethroned Matshidiso Mokebisi to win the WBF super bantamweight title. It was a clinic for Healy who even scored a shutout on one of the judges’ scorecards and it took place in Mokebisi’s home country.

Now, Healy gets a chance to win a major title in another weight division. While she won’t officially be a two division champion, winning a belt from two divisions should only increase the former kickboxer’s confidence.

Healy received notification of this opportunity last month. Since she’s fighting from an upper weight class, she’ll be cutting down. This will be the lightest Healy will fight in. And given the shorter training time, it’s not surprising to see her as the +350 underdog on the Nina Hughes vs Katie Healy odds.

But you “can’t teach size” as they say. Healy will dwarf her opponent as she is 5’7” to Hughes being 5’3”. It will be akin to two boxers from different weight classes. If Healy can utilize her size and reach, she may be able to neutralize Hughes. But if she remains statuesque, as she’s often looked, Hughes may tee up on her.

Healy’s size can work against her as she has plenty of “real estate” for Hughes to attack. But if she can tighten up and prepare for Hughes’s blitz, she could prove the boxing odds wrong. Now, dealing with the speed disadvantage is an entirely different thing.

Hughes Continues to Fight for The Dream

Imagine winning a major world title in your fifth professional bout. That’s the shocking boxing news Hughes pulled off when she upset Jamie Mitchell last November. Hughes went from boxing 7-9 and 3-12 boxers to being one of the four bantamweight champions. And the 40-year-old is just getting started.

“It’s crazy,” she told BBC Sport. “Five fights and I become world champion, it has happened so quickly”.

Indeed. Hughes initially discovered her passion for boxing via some boxing classes for fitness. Her coach convinced her to pursue the sport and she did, even if she said “all the boys kept beating me up.”

Once she transitioned to women’s boxing, Hughes was selected to be a part of the British team. However, despite her promise, she was not selected for the 2012 Summer Olympics. Instead, Hughes retired from the sport and raised a family.

“After training full time it was hard to go back to work, it was a big change. It was heartbreaking. I didn’t think I’d get back into it,” Hughes recalled. “They were showing a lot of female fights on TV, and I thought ‘if I don’t try it, I’ll never know’.”

Thankfully, she rekindled her passion for the sport and is now a world champion. And despite her size, she’s developed a reputation as a powerful boxer. She has two knockout victories in her five wins.

If the Nina Hughes vs Katie Healy odds prove accurate, Hughes could establish herself as a household name.
