German Soccer’s Two-Month Hiatus Over

Bundesliga is Back

The last Bundesliga matches were played over two months ago, on November 13th. A whole lot has happened in the soccer world since then. Argentina won the World Cup, the legendary Pele passed away and Premier League teams have already played four games. So, Bundesliga teams have had plenty of time to prepare for the second part of the season. Let’s take a look at where things currently stand in the German top flight and review the Bundesliga Matchday 16 odds.

Where We Left Off in the Bundesliga

To the surprise of absolutely no one, Bayern Munich are on top of the German Bundesliga standings through 15 matches. The ten-time defending champions went into the World Cup/Winter break with six straight Bundesliga wins.

They do have a lot of injuries to contend with, though. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is out for the season and defender Lucas Hernandez is also expected to miss the rest of the campaign.

Sadio Mane and Noussair Mazraoui are also expected to be out until February. So, second place SC Freiburg will look to close the four-point gap in the meantime.

Freiburg’s Vincenzo Grifo scored a hat trick in their 4-1 win over Union Berlin just before the break. Grifo currently ranks fourth in the Bundesliga goals chart and goalkeeper Mark Flekken leads the league in clean sheets.

The rest of the top four is currently rounded out by RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt. Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku, who is most likely joining Chelsea in the Summer, leads the Bundesliga with 12 goals. Leipzig entered the break with four consecutive wins, which seventh place Wolfsburg also did.

Union Berlin are in fifth and sixth place Borussia Dortmund have had an up and down year. They did, however, get key Summer signing Sebastien Haller back in time for the New Year.

The striker, who underwent chemotherapy, scored 11 goals in the Champions League for Ajax last season. Schalke 04 are currently in last place and VfL Bochum are also in the relegation zone. VfB Stuttgart also occupy the relegation playoff spot.

Games of the Week

RBL RB Leipzig vs Bayern Munich FCB

Date, Time & Streaming:

The Bundesliga is back with a bang with one of the best matchups of the season. RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich will both put their winning streaks on the line on Friday. Unfortunately for Leipzig, this has been a one-sided matchup lately. Bayern have won the last four meetings in all competitions and are unbeaten in the last ten.

So, Bayern come into the match as ½-goal favorites and show -120 ATS and moneyline Bundesliga Matchday 16 odds. They’ve got the Bundesliga’s most productive goal scorer per minute, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. The Cameroonian is dealing with an illness but should be good to go by Friday.

Leipzig pose quite an offensive threat as well, with forwards like Christopher Nkunku, Timo Werner and Andre Silva. Nkunku may miss this match because he’s been out since November with a knee injury. Like Bayern’s keeper Manuel Neuer, Leipzig keeper Peter Gulacsi is out for the season.

Expect Sven Ulreich to start for Bayern and Janis Blaswich to start for RB Leipzig. Recall that Sadio Mane, Noussair Mazraoui and Lucas Hernandez are also out for Bayern. Leipzig currently sit at +280 odds to get just their second-ever win vs. Bayern Munich and at even odds to cover the spread.

A draw is priced at +305 odds in what has been an incredibly high scoring fixture as of late. Five or more goals have been scored in four of the lost five matches these teams have faced off. With Mane and Nkunku presumably out, under 3½ goals comes in at -125 odds.

This is undoubtedly the match of the week and it’ll be interesting to see if Bayern can put an end to Leipzig’s unbeaten home record in 2022-23.

WOB Wolfsburg vs SC Freiburg SCF

Date, Time & Streaming:

Niko Kovac’s time as Wolfsburg manager got off to a slow start but Die Wolfe have been rapidly climbing up the table. They’ve won their last four Bundesliga matches and are unbeaten in their last eight.

They’ll put their unbeaten streak on the line vs. SC Freiburg on Saturday in another excellent match on the Bundesliga games schedule. On Wolfsburg’s winning streak, they’ve outscored their opponents 11-1 but this match is a pick’em.

VfL Wolfsburg come in at -120 ATS odds and +150 odds to win the match. SC Freiburg pk shows even odds and Freiburg’s moneyline is +170. Despite being underdogs, Freiburg won both meetings last season.

‘Freiburg have also been one of the league’s best away teams this season, with a 4-2-2 record. Manager Christian Streich has done an excellent job at Freiburg and he could very well lead them to their first-ever Champions League appearance.’

Still, they’re just three points ahead of fifth place Union Berlin with 19 games to go. Meanwhile, Wolfsburg have lost just one of their seven matches at home this season. Three of those matches have ended in draws and another one displays +240 odds.

Between them, Vincenzo Grifo and Michael Gregoritsch have accounted for 15 of Freiburg’s 25 goals this season. Meanwhile, no Wolfsburg player has registered more than four goals this season. Leading scorer Lukas Nmecha has been out since November 9th following a knee injury. Still, over 2½ goals shows a -115 price for the match.

Other Matches to Watch

Both Union Berlin and Hoffenheim started off the season in good form but slipped heading into the break. Hoffenheim have lost four of their last five and haven’t won since October.

Meanwhile, Union Berlin were leading the league for a while but are now in fifth. When they meet on Saturday it’ll be a crucial match for both teams to build some New Year momentum.

The Bundesliga Matchday 16 odds list Union Berlin at +115 ATS and moneyline Bundesliga Matchday 16 odds. Hoffenheim +½ sits at -135 and they come in at +235 odds to win the match. A draw isn’t far behind, at +240. Union’s Sheraldo Becker is a player to watch, as he’s scored seven goals this season.

Borussia Dortmund are another side that struggled in the weeks leading up to the break. They conceded six goals in their last two matches combined and lost to Wolfsburg and Borussia Monchengladbach.

They’ll need to shore up on defense and have a good opportunity to do so vs. Augsburg. Augsburg are winless in their last seven matches and are +650 underdogs. Dortmund sit at -115 odds to cover the 1½-goal spread and their moneyline is -300 for the match.

‘Borussia Dortmund haven’t lost to Augsburg at home since 2015 and Sebastien Haller could finally make his debut in this one.’

Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen have both underperformed at times this season. However, Bayer Leverkusen won their last three matches heading into the World Cup.

Moussa Diaby scored four goals in those matches and he’s a wanted man in the transfer market. While he’s still a Leverkusen player he’s undoubtedly their biggest attacking threat.

Despite playing on the road, Leverkusen are +130 favorites for the match and they’ve won the last five Bundesliga meetings. Monchengladbach come in at +170 moneyline odds and a draw displays +300 odds in this pick’em.
