Bundesliga Matchday 17 Odds: Bayern Extend Lead to Five Points

Champions League Race Heats Up

Bayern Extend Lead to Five Points

It’s been a long time since there’s been a legitimate title race in the Bundesliga. Ten-time defending champions Bayern Munich have dominated over the last decade. They extended their Bundesliga lead to five points by drawing with RB Leipzig last Friday. Still, there are signs that this season could produce some challengers. Four teams are within six points of Bayern and Wolfsburg also continue to climb the table, with five straight wins. Let’s see which teams have a shot of staying in the title race as we take a look at some midweek Bundesliga Matchday 17 odds.

Games of the Week

M05 Mainz vs Borussia Dortmund BVB

Date & Time:

Borussia Dortmund snapped a two-game losing streak by defeating FC Augsburg 4-3 in a seven-goal thriller. The biggest story of the match, though, was Sébastien Haller making his Bundesliga debut with Borussia Dortmund just six months after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Haller is set to play a big role up front for BVB in the coming months. Jude Bellingham has been a standout for Dortmund this year and got on the scoresheet in their first match of 2023. Now, they’ll take on Mainz, who are winless in their last five matches.

Dortmund enter the match as ½-goal favorites at a +130 ATS and moneyline price. Mainz sit at -150 odds to cover the spread and +190 to win at home.

This season, Mainz have been one of the league’s worst home teams, though. They’ve won just one of their seven matches but do only have two losses at home. This fixture has only finished in a draw once in the last ten meetings and bettors can find a tie at +275 odds.

Despite their struggles, Mainz aren’t to be taken lightly. They have managed draws vs. three of the Bundesliga’s current top five teams this season. Leading scorer Marcus Ingvartsen is also averaging an impressive 0.86 goals per 90 minutes this season. Both teams have conceded around 1.5 goals per game this season but under three goals shows -125 odds for Wednesday’s match.

SVW Werder Bremen vs Union Berlin FCU

Date & Time:

Werder Bremen were on the receiving end of a beatdown on Saturday. The northern club lost 7-1 to FC Koln and trailed 5-0 at halftime. Despite sitting in ninth place in the Bundesliga standings following their loss, only two clubs have conceded more goals than Werder Bremen this season.

They’ve allowed 34 goals in just 16 matches and 10 of their 16 matches have gone over 2½ goals. Yet, the under shows -140 odds for this match. It’s not like Union have been great on defense either, they’ve conceded in their last six Bundesliga matches.

‘Both teams enter the match with a +170 price to win. Union have won the last three meetings between these sides and a draw has +210 odds.’

They did, however, manage to defeat Hoffenheim 3-1 on Saturday. An unlikely source provided a goal-scoring punch as center back Danilho Doekhi scored twice. The win preserved Union’s unbeaten home record this season but they are only 3-1-4 on the road.

That goes a long way in explaining why both teams enter the match with a +170 price to win. Union have won the last three meetings between these sides and a draw has +210 odds.

As things stand, Union Berlin are only five points behind league leaders Bayern Munich. They’re in the thick of the Champions League race and could certainly use a result here. As pick’ems, both teams sit at -110 odds to cover.

Werder have lost their last three Bundesliga matches, though, and are in serious danger of dropping another. While Union have been inconsistent lately, they’ve managed wins over the likes of RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund this season.

SCF SC Freiburg vs Eintracht Frankfurt SGE

Date & Time:

Saturday couldn’t have gone much differently for SC Freiburg and Eintracht Frankfurt. Freiburg, who entered the weekend in second place, got smashed 6-0 by Wolfsburg. Meanwhile, Eintracht Frankfurt replaced Freiburg in second by defeating Schalke 04, 3-0.

Freiburg have an opportunity to leapfrog Frankfurt once more, with the two sides level on points. However, it’ll be difficult to regain confidence after the beating Freiburg took.

Still, Freiburg enter the match as +145 favorites, according to the Bundesliga Matchday 17 odds. Christian Streich’s side has been excellent at home this season, with a 5-1-1 record. Only five of the 23 goals they’ve conceded this season have been at home as well. In this pick’em, Freiburg sit at -125 odds to cover and Eintracht Frankfurt come in at -110 odds.

Eintracht have carried their pre-World Cup form into the New Year and have won three of their last four matches. Frankfurt show +170 odds to go on and win another match.

Two of the last five meetings have finished in draws and another displays +250 odds here. Interestingly, the away team won both fixtures last season. Eintracht Frankfurt’s Jesper Lindstrom scored a brilliant solo goal last weekend and he, Mario Gotze and Randal Kolo Muani form a formidable attack.

Frankfurt kept a shutout even with defenders Luca Pellegrini and Tuta out on Saturday. Both could be back in time for Wednesday. Meanwhile, Freiburg sorely missed leading scorer Vincenzo Grifo vs. Wolfsburg and he should return from an illness by Wednesday. Bettors should note that over 2½ goals are listed at -140 odds.

Other Matches to Watch

S04 Schalke 04 vs RB Leipzig RBL

Date & Time:

RB Leipzig emerged from Friday’s clash with Bayern Munich with a 1-1 draw, even without their star Christopher Nkunku. Nkunku is expected to be back in late February and Leipzig will have to manage in the meantime. Regardless, they’ve got a winnable match on Tuesday.

Leipzig head to last place Schalke 04, who have only won two games this season. Leipzig enter the match as -180 moneyline favorites, corresponding to an implied probability of 64.3 percent to win the match. They’ve been quite a popular team for betting on Bundesliga games this season.

Still, Schalke are implied to be more likely to cover the one-goal spread. The relegation favorites come in at -115 odds to cover, while Leipzig sit at even odds to win by more than one goal.

Leipzig are unbeaten in their last nine Bundesliga matches and have averaged nearly 2.5 goals per game during that span. Over 2½ goals displays a -150 price and punters can find a draw at +300 odds.

FCB Bayern Munich vs FC Koln KOE

Date & Time:

FC Koln emphatically ended their five-game winless run with a 7-1 demolition of Werder Bremen. Now, they’ll take on behemoths Bayern Munich on the road. Bayern are one of three undefeated Bundesliga teams at home this season.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side has gone 5-2-0 at the Allianz Arena and are two-goal favorites heading into Tuesday. Bayern recently signed goalkeeper Yann Sommer to plug in the gap that Manuel Neuer’s season-ending injury created.

Sommer is more than capable and expect the in-form Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting to continue to get minutes at striker.

Bundesliga Matchday 17 odds price Bayern at -125 to cover the two-goal spread and -500 to win the match. Koln, who just snapped a three-game losing run, show +105 odds to cover and +1100 odds to defeat Bayern for the first time since 2011.

Bayern are on a nine-game winning streak in this fixture and a draw sits at long +675 odds. Over 3½ goals also comes in at -140 odds in what’s expected to be quite a high-scoring contest.
