Leverkusen Unbeaten Against German Teams for 14 Months

The domestic double winners haven’t lost to a fellow German team for over 14 months and that record will be put to the test on Saturday.

In the DFL-Supercup, Leverkusen host the 2023-24 Bundesliga second-placed team Stuttgart before they kick off their Bundesliga campaigns the week after. As German top flight soccer returns, we’ll analyze the Bayer Leverkusen vs Stuttgart odds.

Bayer Leverkusen Returning Key Players

2023-24 Season:

  • Bundesliga: 28-6-0 (1st)
  • DFBPokal: Champions, defeated Kaiserslautern 1-0 in final
  • Europa League: Finalists, lost 3-0 to Atalanta

The best news of the Summer for Bayer Leverkusen was Xabi Alonso’s announcement he’d stay with the club. The Spanish coach led Bayer Leverkusen to their best-ever season and, frankly, one of the best seasons in modern club football. Bayer Leverkusen won their first Bundesliga title, with an unbeaten 28-6-0 record, in 2023-24 and won the DFB-Pokal to boot.

Their Bundesliga scores were sensational and the only blemish on an excellent campaign was a 3-0 loss in the Europa League final, to Atalanta. So, Leverkusen finished the campaign with a formidable 43-9-1 record, in all competitions. It also looks like Bayer Leverkusen may keep all of their key players from last season through the Summer transfer window.

Center back Jonathan Tah has been linked with Bayern Munich but the clubs couldn’t agree on a deal, at least not yet. At the very least, we expect talisman Florian Wirtz, who won the Bundesliga’s Player of the Season award in May, to stick around for a season longer.

Plus, productive wingbacks Jeremie Frimpong and Alex Grimaldo are still around, along with Granit Xhaka. Striker Victor Boniface missed some time with injuries last season but Alonso will rely on him and a healthy Patrik Schick this season. Leverkusen strengthened in the Summer, by adding Martin Terrier and Aleix Garcia, but midfielder Exequiel Palacios is out with a meniscus injury.

Stuttgart in First Supercup Since 1992

2023-24 Season:

  • Bundesliga: 23-4-7 (2nd)
  • DFB-Pokal: Quarter-Finals, lost 3-2 at Bayer Leverkusen

While Bayer Leverkusen were the biggest surprises of the 2023-24 season, Stuttgart weren’t terribly far behind. In June 2023, they contested the relegation playoff and less than a year later, Stuttgart finished in second place in the German Bundesliga standings. Sebastian Hoeness did an excellent job with his squad, who lost only seven games.

Serhou Guirassy was a breakout star but he joined Borussia Dortmund this Summer. Defenders Waldemar Anton and Hiroki Ito also left for Dortmund and Bayern Munich, respectively. Stuttgart did manage to bring in Deniz Undav on a permanent deal as the German international scored 18 goals and provided 10 assists on loan from Brighton in 2023-24.

New signing Ermedin Demirovic will do his best to replace Guirassy’s production and Stuttgart also brought in four new center backs. There are some injury concerns heading into the season, including Josha Vagnoman and Dan-Axel Zagadou.

While Stuttgart will play in the Champions League this season, the Bundesliga fixtures odds price them at just +225 to finish in the top four again.

Bayer Leverkusen vs Stuttgart Match Analysis & Odds

Both sides have only made one previous appearance in the DFL-Supercup, which was back in the 1990s. Last season, Bayern Munich fell in this fixture to RB Leipzig, despite playing in Munich. Leverkusen haven’t lost a home game since May 5th, 2023 and they’ll try to keep things that way on Saturday.

The latest Bayer Leverkusen vs Stuttgart odds price Leverkusen as -118 moneyline favorites. Meanwhile, bettors can take Stuttgart at +290 and a draw at +280. Six of the last seven matches of this fixture at the BayArena, in all competitions, have finished in Bayer Leverkusen wins.

While the spine of Leverkusen’s team is the same this season, Stuttgart have some moving parts but scored at least three goals in each of their final four warm up friendlies. In any case, Stuttgart +0.5 sits at +102 odds while under 3, 3.5 goals show -138 odds for what should be an excellent curtain raiser for the season.
