Clubs Vying for Position in the Early Stages

Bayern Munich Back on Top of the Table After Matchday 1

The Bundesliga season started off with a bang as Bayern Munich thrashed Eintracht Frankfurt 6-1 on the road. There were other surprises too, like Freiburg’s 4-0 demolition of FC Augsburg. Top-four favorites RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen also both dropped points. There are certain to be more twists and turns in Bundesliga Matchday 2. We’ll cover the Bundesliga Matchday 2 highlights and run through the odds from some of the best matches of the weekend.

SC Freiburg vs Borussia Dortmund

With a dominant 4-0 win over FC Augsburg, SC Freiburg picked up where they left off last season. The Breisgau Brazilians will be playing Europa League soccer soon and will try to push for the top four this season. Their opponents this weekend, Borussia Dortmund, are a Bundesliga contender. So, this match is one of the Bundesliga Matchday 2 highlights. Plus, there’s a bit of bad blood between these two. Dortmund center-back Nico Schlotterbeck made the switch from Freiburg this Summer.

Borussia Dortmund started the season with a 1-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen. Captain Marco Reus scored the game’s only goal to secure the three points. Dortmund is now +115 road favorites heading into Friday night’s matchup, however, they’re winless in their last three Bundesliga matches at the Europa-Park Stadion. A draw, which hasn’t occurred in the last five meetings, is listed at +265 odds.

Freiburg is implied to be more likely to cover the ½-goal spread as underdogs, priced at -135. SC Freiburg managed a 2-1 win at home vs. Dortmund last season but show just +210 odds to do it again. In the last meeting, though, Erling Haaland scored a double as Dortmund blew out SC Freiburg 5-1.

Note that Haaland is off to Man City and two of Borussia Dortmund’s key attacking players, Sebastien Haller and Karim Adeyemi, are injured. Even so, six of the last seven meetings have finished with three or more goals. Over three goals are currently priced at -135.

RB Leipzig vs Köln

Domenico Tedesco’s RB Leipzig started off the season with a disappointing 1-1 draw at Stuttgart. They’ll host FC Koln, who are coming off of a 3-1 win over Schalke, on Saturday. The good news for Leipzig is that it took Christopher Nkunku just eight minutes to get on the scoresheet this season.

The French forward is one of the Golden Boot contenders in the Bundesliga and could cause problems for the Koln defense. The Bundesliga game odds favor Leipzig, at -220 to win. Nkunku scored the first Leipzig goal in a 3-1 win over Koln at Red Bull Arena last season; however, Koln had a ridiculous 32-shot attempt vs. Schalke last weekend and looked like a dangerous team.

Still, Leipzig is a different caliber than the newly promoted Schalke and heads into the contest as one-goal favorites. Koln is priced at +550 to get their first win in Leipzig since 2018 and a draw currently sits at +350.

Dating back to last season, Koln has failed to keep a clean sheet in 10 competitive matches. Yet, under three goals is priced at -115 vs. -105 for over three. RB Leipzig has strengthened their attack ahead of this one with Timo Werner rejoining from Chelsea. Also, Leipzig has found the net in their last 15 competitive matches.

Mainz vs Union Berlin

Mainz 05 and Union Berlin are two of the more underappreciated teams in the league. Union finished just one point outside of the top four last season and started 2022-23 off with a win. One of the better bet tips for Bundesliga in recent seasons has been taking them over Hertha in the Berlin Derby. They didn’t disappoint last Saturday as they beat their rivals 3-1.

Mainz was one of just eight teams to finish with a positive goal difference last season. They got all three points at Bochum last Saturday as Karim Onisiwo scored a double. Last season, though, Union Berlin got the better of Mainz. Union got a 3-1 win at home and stole three points in a 2-1 road victory.

Since Union was promoted to the Bundesliga in 2019, Mainz has only won one game against them. Despite that, home side Mainz are the favorites here, at +140 odds. Union Berlin is priced at an intriguing +220, while bettors will find a draw at relatively short +210 odds.

This pick’em is expected to be one of the most competitive matches of the weekend. The winner could very well be on top of the Bundesliga table by the end of the weekend as well.

Bayern Munich vs Wolfsburg

Bayern Munich started coach Julian Nagelsmann’s second season off on the right foot. They showed no mercy to Eintracht Frankfurt in their 6-1 win. Sadio Mane also scored a debut goal for the ten-time defending Bundesliga champions. Now, they host Wolfsburg at the Allianz Arena on Sunday.

Wolfsburg was one of the most disappointing teams of the 2021-22 Bundesliga season, finishing in 12th place. They only managed to get a point over the weekend at home vs. newly promoted Werder Bremen. Now they have to face Bayern on the road, where Wolfsburg was dreadful last season. They won just five of their eighteen matches away from the Volkswagen Arena.

In the last match of the 2021-22 season, Wolfsburg did manage a 2-2 draw vs. Bayern. However, Bayern had already clinched the title by then. Wolfsburg are +1200 underdogs and have never won at the Allianz in the Bundesliga. In fact, they’ve gained just two points there in 25 previous meetings.

So, it’s no surprise that Bayern is heavy -575 favorites in this one. Bettors are less confident about the 2½-goal spread though, and Wolfsburg is implied to be slightly more likely to cover. Incredibly, over four goals are priced at -120 even though more than four goals have been scored in two of the last ten meetings. If more than four goals are scored, though, expect a lot of the Bundesliga Matchday 2 highlights to come from this match.
