Soccer: Bundesliga Matchday 1 Preview 2022-23
Germany’s Top Flight League Kicks Off Friday

Bayern Munich Start Quest for 11th Consecutive Title
The Bundesliga is back in business on Friday as Matchweek 1 features some excellent matchups. Ten-time defending champions Bayern Munich start the season away at 2021-22 Europa League champions Eintracht Frankfurt. This Bundesliga Matchday has it all, {derbies, marquee matchups, and exciting new bundesliga players. We’ll cover all bettors and fans need to know in our Bundesliga Matchday 1 preview.
Eintracht Frankfurt vs Bayern Munich
Eintracht Frankfurt has been a thorn in Bayern Munich’s side over the last few seasons. In the last three meetings, Frankfurt is 2-1 and has held Bayern to one goal per game. Yet, the Bundesliga betting odds price Frankfurt as +550 underdogs on Friday. Frankfurt has made some interesting signings in the offseason, like Mario Gotze and Lucas Alario.
Bayern Munich is coming off of a 5-3 win in the German Supercup vs RB Leipzig last Saturday. The Bavarians, even without Robert Lewandowski, are capable of running up the score and showing -225 odds.
A draw, on the other hand, sits at +400 and none of the last 14 meetings in all competitions have been deadlocks. There are expected to be quite a few goals on Friday, as the over/under total is currently at 3½.
Union Berlin vs Hertha Berlin
Saturday kicks off with a Berlin derby between Union Berlin and Hertha Berlin at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. Union Berlin, who will play in the Europa League this season, has gotten the better of Hertha since joining the Bundesliga in 2019.
Union has won four of the seven competitive meetings since then and won all three last season. So, it comes as no surprise that they sit at -125 odds to win on Saturday despite losing key striker Taiwo Awoniyi.
Hertha has declined over the last few seasons and narrowly escaped relegation in 2021-22. They defeated Hamburg 2-1 on aggregate in the relegation playoff and will be hoping to avoid the drop again in 2022-23.
Borussia Monchengladbach vs Hoffenheim
Hoffenheim and Borussia Monchengladbach both underperformed last season and finished 9th and 10th, respectively. Borussia Monchengladbach sit at +400 Bundesliga future odds to make the top four this season; however, they’ll need to improve greatly on the road to make that dream a reality. Thankfully, they open up the season at home, where they lost just five matches last season.
Also, Gladbach demolished Hoffenheim 5-1 in the 2021-22 closer and now open the 2022-23 season with a visit from them. Regardless, this is expected to be one of the most competitive matches of the weekend. Neither team has greater than a 50 percent implied chance of victory and a draw is listed at +275. Gladbach is showing +120 odds, while Hoffenheim is priced at +275.
Hoffenheim’s David Raum completed a big money transfer to RB Leipzig recently which weakens an ailing defense. Borussia Monchengladbach isn’t much better in that department as both teams conceded 60 or more goals last season. With that in mind, the O/U is at 3½.
Borussia Dortmund vs Bayer Leverkusen
Our Bundesliga Matchday 1 preview identifies this as the game of the weekend. Dortmund has a new coach and a handful of new talents, while Leverkusen is a dark horse title contender. With new striker Sebastien Haller sidelined for the foreseeable future, Dortmund could rely on 20-year-old Karim Adeyemi. Erling Haaland is off to Manchester City but BVB is still quite a dangerous attacking side.
Plus, Edin Terzic has shored up his back line with the signings of Niklas Sule from Bayern and Niko Schlotterbeck from SC Freiburg. It’ll be exciting to see two Champions League teams on offer even if Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz is still recovering from injury. This Bundesliga matchup is almost always a high-scoring affair, as three or more goals have been scored in each of the last nine.
The O/U total for Sunday’s match is 3½, while Dortmund is +115 favorites to win. Leverkusen is seen as more likely to cover their +½ spread, at -135 odds. These teams split their meetings last season, with the away German Bundesliga team winning both games.
Stuttgart vs RB Leipzig
RB Leipzig starts their Bundesliga campaign on the road at Stuttgart. Our Bundesliga Matchday 1 preview identifies this as a potentially tricky game for Leipzig. Although, Stuttgart have never beaten Leipzig and RB outscored them 6-0 last season.
Domenico Tedesco’s Leipzig lost right back Nordi Mukiele and center mid Tyler Adams in the offseason, however, they did bring in left-back David Raum and center midfielder Xaver Schlager to provide depth in key areas. Leipzig fell to Bayern Munich 5-3 in the German Supercup and displayed their offensive potential.
Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku is on the golden boot watchlist and he scored in this fixture last season. Stuttgart, who finished in a precarious 15th place last season, are +340 underdogs. Meanwhile, RB Leipzig is +130 favorites and a draw is priced at +290.
