Argonauts Ready to Extend Underdog Streak

The Argonauts are not expected to win the 2022 CFL Grey Cup. But coming in as underdogs will likely be a boon for Toronto, which is entering one of its best stretches of the season.

The Argonauts are 8-2 in their last 10 games and one of these losses happened in a meaningless game with their starters resting. This team is putting up over 30 points a game in these wins and the defense is the best in the league.

Toronto’s defense, which features a CFL All-Star in every unit; defensive line, linebacker, and secondary, led the regular season in turnovers forced with 48. The team also allowed the lowest passing efficiency against opposing quarterbacks at just 84.1 thanks partly to the 29 interceptions the Argos pulled.

But perhaps Toronto’s best weapon is a player familiar with the Blue Bombers: Andrew Harris. The running back returned to action last week. Not only did he score a touchdown for Toronto, but his leadership and energy will give the team a jolt. Head coach Ryan Dinwiddie got everything he can out of Harris in regard to his former team.

“I’ve got to see what Mike [O’Shea] got done in Winnipeg,” Dinwiddie said. “Did he do it overnight? No, but look at what he’s built — a factory over there. You look at that and want to build that yourself.

We’re playing in this game so I think we’ve made some positive strides as an organization over the last two years. You want to build that model that can sustain success for a long time.”

Toronto poses as a potentially lucrative underdog bet on the Grey Cup odds with their fiery offense, opportunistic defense, and “inside info” on the Bombers. The total, set at 48 points, could also be going ‘over’ like 10 of their last 11 games against Winnipeg.

Blue Bombers Making Bid for History

The Blue Bombers are into their third year as the CFL’s champions and the team keeps getting better. Winnipeg lost Harris and a few key players in the offseason. And yet, the team went on finish atop the CFL standings by winning a franchise-record 15 games.

Quarterback Zach Collaros is likely going home with a second consecutive Most Outstanding Player award while the defense led the league by allowing only 19.2 points per game.

Collaros suffered an ankle injury against the Lions last week. He has sat out some practices but the CFL news reports indicate that he will still play in the Grey Cup. Head coach Mike O’Shea is not fazed. The CFL’s longest-tenured coach has a 7-3 playoff record and is unbeaten (6-0) since Collaros became the Bombers’ quarterback.

“If I’m asking our players to stay in the moment and stay focused on the very important task at hand,” O’Shea said. “I don’t waste a lot of time during the season worrying about after the season. We can fix that or figure it out after.”

O’Shea is referring to his contract set to expire at the conclusion of the season. If anything, his impending departure could give this team a “The Last Dance” kind of vibe like the NBA’s Chicago Bulls of the mid-90s. But O’Shea should return to Winnipeg, especially if the Bombers become the first team to capture three consecutive Grey Cup titles in over 40 years.

Winnipeg will have to handle business against Toronto first. The Argonauts have played the Bombers close in the last two seasons. However, Winnipeg is 7-3 against Toronto in both the moneyline and spread in their last 10 games. If they can finish the job in this 2022 CFL Grey Cup, the Bombers are the greatest CFL team.
