Head-to-Head

Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund have met four times in the last ten years. The Champions League stats show that City leads the series 2-1, with one draw. Most recently, Man City defeated Borussia Dortmund in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Champions League. Phil Foden scored in both legs for City as they picked up two 2-1 win. These teams were also in the same group in the 2012-13 Champions League. Dortmund won at home 1-0 and they drew 1-1 at the Etihad.

Man City Scoring in Bunches

  • Last Match: 4-0 W at Sevilla
  • Injuries and Suspensions: D John Stones (Day-to-Day), D Kyle Walker (Day-to-Day), D Aymeric Laporte (Out)

Manchester City was slated to play a blockbuster match vs. Tottenham on Saturday. The Queen’s death postponed the match to a later date. So, Manchester City gets a full week of rest before taking on Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday. City outclassed Sevilla 4-0 in their Champions League opener as Erling Haaland scored a double. The City hasn’t lost a home UCL match since 2018 but has a few defenders injured.

Center back Aymeric Laporte is out for the match and isn’t expected back for a few weeks. Meanwhile, right-back Kyle Walker and center-back John Stones are major doubts. We could see Manuel Akanji get another start at CB and it’d be against his former club. All of City’s attacking players are healthy heading into Wednesday. A look at the Manchester City scores shows that they’ve found the net in every match they’ve played this season.

Erling Haaland has 10 goals in the Premier League and two in the Champions League, so far. No other City player has more than three goals in total but they’re creating tons of chances. They’ve scored at least four goals in three of their last four matches in all competitions. The Cityzens come into Wednesday with an over/under goal total of 2½. The over is currently priced at -125 odds.

Rose Gets Revenge on Dortmund

  • Last Match: 3-0 L at RB Leipzig
  • Injuries and Suspensions: G Gregor Kobel (Out), M Mahmoud Dahoud (Out), M Thorgan Hazard (Out), F Donyell Malen (Day-to-Day), F Karim Adeyemi (Out), F Sebastien Haller (Out), F Jamie Byone-Gittens (Out)

Borussia Dortmund’s recent 3-0 loss to RB Leipzig was one that stung especially hard. It was former Dortmund manager Marco Rose’s first game in charge of RB Leipzig. Rose got his revenge as Dortmund failed to put a shot on target. With the loss, Dortmund dropped to fifth place in the Bundesliga.

Manchester City vs. Borussia Dortmund odds implies that Dortmund should get on the board in this match though. They’re priced at -145 odds to score a goal and defeated FC Copenhagen 3-0 last week. Still, they’ve got a bunch of injuries to attacking players which impact their chances in the match.

Anthony Modeste may very well be the only striker healthy on Wednesday. Donyell Malen is nearing a return from a muscle injury but Karim Adeyemi and Sebastien Haller are out. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel is also out, which means that Alexander Meyer should receive a third straight start. Thorgan Hazard and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens are other absences that’ll hurt Dortmund on Wednesday.

Odds & Preview

Both teams won their Champions League openers. So, the winner, if there is one, will be on top of Group G. Manchester City is the overwhelming favorite to get a win here, at -420 odds. They’re even favored to cover the 1½-goal spread, at -150 Manchester City vs. Borussia Dortmund odds. City dominated Sevilla from start to finish last Tuesday and now they’ll be playing in front of their home fans.

City are unbeaten in their last 20 Champions League home matches, dating back to 2018. They’ve won 18 of those 20 matches, scoring an average of over three goals per game. Pep Guardiola’s side is Champions League favorites and, with Haaland, this appears to be their best chance to win yet.

Borussia Dortmund, +880 underdogs, have lost three of their last four Champions League matches on the road. Interestingly, none of their last 16 away matches in the competition have ended in draws. A draw sits at +540 odds as Dortmund’s injuries seem to be heavily impacting their odds. The over/under goals total of 3½ currently favors the under, at -120 odds. Man City is expected to dominate but each previous match between these teams has been decided by a single goal or ended in a draw.
