Premier League Returns for Boxing Day

The Premier League’s World Cup hiatus is over just in time for its traditional Boxing Day fixtures. EPL teams haven’t played for over a month and it’ll be interesting to see how they get on during a jam-packed holiday season. From December 26th to January 5th, teams will play three games each. Following the World Cup, most teams are already dealing with injuries and players who played last weekend will just be returning to training this week. Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal enter Boxing Day in first place and we’ll see if they can keep pace. We’ll take a look at the Arsenal vs. West Ham and other EPL Matchday 17 odds.

Games of the Week:

Brentford vs. Tottenham

Date & Time & Streaming:

Thomas Frank’s Brentford went unbeaten in their last three matches before the World Cup. They’ll take on third-place Tottenham in the first of seven Monday Boxing Day fixtures on the EPL schedule. Spurs GK Hugo Lloris and center back Cristian Romero both played in the World Cup final on Sunday. Romero was on the winning side but it remains to be seen whether either of them will be available for Monday’s match.

Spurs lost three of their last five matches before the break and are dealing with a number of injuries. Forward Richarlison is out until late January with a hamstring injury and midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has an abductor injury. In any case, Bentancur is also out for Brentford due to a yellow card suspension. Still, Tottenham show both -115 moneyline and ATS odds. Brentford, ½-goal underdogs, sit at -105 odds to cover the spread. The Bees have been one of the league’s better home teams this season and come in at +295 odds to win. Brentford defeated Manchester City in their last match before the World Cup break as well.

Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son are both available for Tottenham on Monday. Meanwhile, Brentford striker Ivan Toney hasn’t been suspended yet after getting charged with 232 betting rule breaches. So, expect him to lead the line on Monday. When these teams met in West London last season, the match finished scoreless. Another draw shows +270 odds and the over/under goal total for the match is 2½. The over is implied to be more likely, at -120 odds. The over has come through in 10 of both Brentford and Tottenham’s 15 matches this season.

Aston Villa vs. Liverpool

Date & Time & Streaming:

Since sacking Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard for Unai Emery, Aston Villa are 2-0 in the Premier League. Now Emery and Villa take on Liverpool at home on Boxing Day. The World Cup break has come at a decent time for Villa, as Emery got a mid-season training camp with his new team. World Cup Golden Glove winner Emi Martinez is in talks to return for the match, which would be a big boost for Villa. Especially since Liverpool head into Monday as -145 favorites.

Jurgen Klopp’s side has had a bumpy ride so far this season but their injury woes are mostly behind them. Only Arthur Melo, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota are on the injury report for Liverpool. The Reds won their final two games before the break and are now in sixth place. Mo Salah should also be rested and ready. Aston Villa enter the match as ½-goal underdogs sitting at +125 ATS odds. Villa have lost their last four matches vs. Liverpool in all competitions and enter the match as +370 underdogs.

Expect Villa to try to hit Liverpool on the counter attack. Emery’s teams are usually quite compact and defense minded, so Liverpool may have to be patient in this one. Interestingly, none of the last 13 matches between these teams have finished in a draw. A deadlock still comes in at +305 odds for Monday’s match. Over three goals sits at even odds, while the under shows -120 EPL Matchday 17 odds for this one.

Arsenal vs. West Ham

Date & Time & Streaming:

The first part of the season could not have gone much better for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal. With a 12-1-1 record, they lead the Premier League by five points over Manchester City. However, they got bad news during the World Cup. Star striker Gabriel Jesus is set to miss two months with a knee injury. It’s up to Eddie Nketiah to fill in and he did quite well last year when he took over the starting role from Alexandre Lacazette. He’ll get his first chance to impress on Monday vs. West Ham. Midfielder Emile Smith-Rowe is also working his way back from a long term injury.

Even without Jesus, Arsenal enter the match as one-goal favorites. They sit at -115 ATS odds and are -200 moneyline favorites. The Hammers struggled mightily heading into the World Cup break. They dropped their last three matches and scored just one goal in the process. West Ham are also 0-1-5 in their last six matches vs. Arsenal. They come in at -105 odds to cover the spread and +525 moneyline odds. A draw is priced at +335 odds but Arsenal are a perfect 6-0 at the Emirates this season.

West Ham matches have had the fewest overs of any team in the EPL this season. Over 2½ goals has occurred in just three of their 15 matches this season. Still, over 2½ is priced at -125 Premier League betting odds for Monday’s match. Defender Kurt Zouma is out for the Hammers, while Gianluca Scamacca’s status is also worth keeping an eye on.

Leeds United vs. Manchester City

Date & Time & Streaming:

Leeds United might not win often but they are exhilarating to watch. Jesse Marsch’s team usually goes balls to the wall no matter the opponent. Teams often play more conservatively vs. Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City but don’t count on Leeds to back down. Still, Leeds have been outscored 11-0 by Manchester City in their last two meetings.

The EPL Matchday 17 Odds price Man City as -340 road favorites at Leeds. They also show -125 odds to cover the 1½-goal spread. Two-time defending champions Man City are currently in second place and have a clean bill of health. That includes the Premier League’s leading scorer, Erling Haaland. The Norwegian has gotten off to an incredible start, with 18 goals in 13 matches. Meanwhile, Leeds are dealing with a long list of injuries. Goalkeeper Ilan Meslier is day-to-day, along with Diego Llorente, Crysencio Summerville and Patrick Bamford. Meanwhile, Luis Sinisterra and Stuart Dallas are expected to be out for this one.

Leeds sit at +800 odds to win the match and +105 odds to cover. Punters can take a draw at +500 odds as well.

Given their injury list, it’s not a big surprise that Leeds sit at +800 odds to win the match and +105 odds to cover. Punters can take a draw at +500 odds as well. The over/under goals total is relatively high for the match, at 3½. It’s not necessarily expected to be a goal fest though, with the under priced at -125 odds. Still, City have an explosive offense centered around Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne and have the potential to pour in the goals.
