West Ham Conceding in Bunches

West Ham fell behind 2-0 in the first half in Sunday’s match vs. Burnley in the Premier League. David Datro Fofana scored an 11th minute screamer and West Ham’s Dinos Mavropanos sent in an unfortunate ‘own goal’ just before halftime. In the second half, the Hammers didn’t take long to get a goal back, as Lucas Paqueta scored in the 46th minute. Substitute striker Danny Ings looked to have the equalizer but the goal was disallowed by VAR.

Ings eventually did grab his goal on a clean turn and shot. The draw meant West Ham remained unbeaten for a third straight Premier League match. However, David Moyes’ side hasn’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last 11 matches overall. West Ham have conceded at least two goals in five of their last seven matches. The goal they conceded last week to Freiburg was their first conceded in the Europa League for 395 minutes of play, though.

West Ham have also conceded 10 goals in their last three matches at the London Stadium, which includes a 6-0 drubbing at Arsenal’s hands. After a fast start to life in London, Mohamed Kudus hasn’t yet scored a goal in 2024. James Ward-Prowse has provided four assists in the Europa League and ranks fifth in the competition overall. Michail Antonio recently recovered from a long term injury as Emerson is doubtful and Maxwel Cornet is out for this one. Currently, the West Ham vs Freiburg odds price the Hammers as -135 favorites for Thursday’s match.

Gregoritsch Grabbing Goals for Freiburg

On Sunday, Freiburg won their first Bundesliga match since January when they took down VfL Bochum 2-1. Maximilian Eggestein scored for the first time this season and Michael Gregoritsch doubled Freiburg’s lead. Bochum got a goal back but Freiburg managed to hold on for their fourth road win of the Bundesliga season. Austrian international Gregoritsch has now scored in back-to-back games. He also leads the Europa league, with 1.5 goals per 90 minutes.

Along with Gregoritsch, Vincenzo Grifo and Roland Sallai rank in the top 10 for Europa League goals this season. Although Freiburg scored nearly three goals per game in the group stage, they finished behind West Ham in the Group A UEL standings. It looked like SC Freiburg were headed for the Europa League exit door in the knockout play-off.

They fell behind 2-0 in the first half of the second leg vs. Lens and pulled off an improbable comeback to force extra time. Gregoritsch came through with the winning goal and he’s scored some important goals lately. Freiburg have never reached the UEL Quarter-Final before and the Europa League odds price them as +3300 longshots to win the title.

Match Analysis & Odds

Only a win will cut it for West Ham on Thursday and they are -135 home favorites to pick up a win here. Still, SC Freiburg are the favorites to go on and qualify, at -140 odds to advance. The Hammers come in at even odds to advance to the Quarter-Final and they’ve advanced to at least the Semifinal in their last two appearances in European competition.

Should West Ham win by two or more goals, they’ll advance automatically but a one goal win would force extra time. The West Ham vs Freiburg odds list the visitors as +350 underdogs to grab a second straight win over the Hammers. Meanwhile, a draw (+285) would mean that Freiburg advance to their first UEL Quarter-Final.

West Ham -1, -1.5 and Freiburg +1, +1.5 both display -115 odds and Freiburg just need to keep things close here. Freiburg have struggled on the road this season, at just 7-2-9 and they’ve scored just four goals in their last five road games. Here, both over and under 2.5 goals are priced at -115 odds.
