Monaco Grand Prix Results: Verstappen’s dominance continues

Despite late weather changes, Verstappen takes fourth win of Formula 1 season

Many were looking forward to the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix. Monte Carlo’s streets offered another driver and team a chance to challenge defending champion Max Verstappen and Red Bull. The Red Bull RB19’s strengths would be mitigated thanks to one of the slowest F1 races on the Formula 1 schedule.

Instead, the Monaco Grand Prix results showed us why Verstappen has won the last two world F1 championships.

Best Qualifying Session of 2023

Monaco Grand Prix qualifying was one of the most exciting sessions of 2023. With 3:30 left in qualifying 3, Esteban Ocon took the pole by 0.101 seconds in his Alpine. Two minutes later, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc topped his time by 0.082 seconds. Fernando Alonso, an excellent choice for a surprise victory this weekend, beat Leclerc by 0.022 seconds in his Aston Martin with less than a minute left in the session.

Verstappen came across the finish line a minute later. He took the pole position by a minuscule 0.084 seconds after one of the best final sectors in Monaco Grand Prix history. The top four drivers starting Sunday’s race were covered by just 0.188 seconds.

Rounding out the top 10 for Sunday’s race were Carlos Sainz for Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton in a Mercedes, Pierre Gasly in the other Alpine, George Russell in the second Mercedes, Yuki Tsunoda in an AlphaTauri, and Lando Norris in the first McLaren.

The rest of the field was as follows: Oscar Piastri (McLaren) in 11th, Nyck de Vries (AlphaTauri) in 12th, Alexander Albon (Williams) in 13th, Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) in 14th, Valtteri Bottas (Alfa Romeo) in 15th, Logan Sargeant (Williams) in 16th, Kevin Magnussen (Haas) in 17th, Nico Hulkenberg (Haas) in 18th, Zhou Guanyu (Alfa Romeo) in 19th, Sergio Pérez (Red Bull) in 20th. A crash in Q1 in qualifying knocked Pérez farther down the order than usual.

Monaco Grand Prix race: Late rain causes drama

For most of the Monaco Grand Prix, the running order remained the same as it was in qualifying. Verstappen maintained a lead from Alonso. Alonso gapped Ocon, who was running after a post-qualifying penalty pushed Leclerc to start sixth.

Sainz and Ferrari attempted to overtake Ocon in the first round of pit stops but failed. The Ferrari driver voiced his frustrations on the radio.

With just 26 laps left to go, rain fell hard on the Monaco Grand Prix circuit. The track conditions changed quickly. Sainz hit Ocon after following him closely for most of the race but was left out by his team for too long. Both Ferrari drivers dropped down the order after the whole grid pitted for intermediate tires.

Verstappen took his fourth win of the race from Alonso and Ocon. This race marks Ocon’s third career podium. Hamilton, Russell, Leclerc, Gasly, Sainz, Norris, and Piastri rounded out the top 10.

Verstappen’s win earned him the most F1 points on the day for his finish among the Monaco Grand Prix results. His lead at the top of the F1 standings is 39 points ahead of Pérez. Red Bull continued its perfect winning percentage in 2023 and now boasts a 129-point lead over Aston Martin among the Monaco Grand Prix results.

What’s ahead on the F1 schedule

Next up on the Formula 1 schedule is the second European race: the Spanish Grand Prix. The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya offers a different challenge. It’s long considered one of the most predictive tracks; if a car is good at the Spanish Grand Prix, it’ll likely be good anywhere else on the Formula 1 schedule.
