FIFA Women’s World Cup: Japan vs Spain Odds

Winner Finishes First in Group C

Japan and Spain Both Through to Knockout Stage

Japan and Spain have kicked off their Women’s World Cup campaigns with two wins each. As a result, both sides will advance from Group C to the Round of 16. The winner will advance as the group’s first-place team when they face off on Monday. Spain will seal first place if the match finishes in a draw due to a superior goal difference. We’ll look at the Japan vs. Spain odds and preview one of the most exciting matches of the group stage.

FIFA Women’s World Cup

Japan vs. Spain

Date, time:

Head-to-Head

This is the first match between Japan and Spain on their all-time Women’s World Cup schedules. Spain is the only team that Japan have played more than once all-time and have not defeated. Spain are 3-1-0 in this fixture and defeated Japan 1-0 in a 2022 friendly.

Japan Qualify for Fourth Straight Knockout Stage

    • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 11
    • Last Match: 2-0 W vs. Costa Rica
    • Standings: 2-0, 2nd Group C

Japan’s dominant 5-0 win over Zambia in their Women’s World Cup opener showed they mean business. The 2011 champions followed it up with a comfortable 2-0 win over Costa Rica which sealed a fourth straight knockout stage berth. In the 25th minute, Hikaru Naomoto capitalized on a Costa Rican defensive error and fired a left foot shot. Just two minutes later, Aoba Fujino scored from a tight angle, and Japan were never seriously threatened on the other end.

Japan has kept two clean sheets in a row for the first time in their Women’s World Cup history. Over the last 15 years, they’ve been an excellent pick for betting on soccer and have made two of the previous three World Cup finals. Japan’s defense has been outstanding in 2023 as they’ve conceded just four goals in eight matches and haven’t allowed more than one goal in any game.

Regardless, the Japan vs. Spain odds price Japan as underdogs here as they go for a Group C victory. Japan have lost just three of their last 16 Women’s World Cup matches and are going for a fourth straight knockout stage appearance.

Spain Pour in Goals vs. Zambia

  • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 6
  • Last Match: 5-0 W vs. Zambia
  • Standings: 2-0, 1st Group C

Spain’s World Cup games have certainly gone according to plan so far. They’ve scored eight goals through two matches and haven’t yet conceded a goal. They defeated Costa Rica 3-0 in their opener and followed it up with a 5-0 win over Zambia. Teresa Abelleira kicked off the scoring in the ninth minute with an unstoppable long-range effort.

Jennifer Hermoso and substitute Alba Redondo both added two goals apiece. Spain are level on six points with Japan through two matches. However, Spain are ahead on goal difference, with +8 compared to Japan’s +7. Spain have never before won two matches at a Women’s World Cup but have already done it here with one group-stage match remaining.

A draw will be enough for Spain to win their group for the first time. The player protests, which significantly weakened Spain’s squad following Euro 2022, haven’t seemed to affect the squad. Some players who initially resigned have returned to the squad since then and played big roles. That includes Hermoso, Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmati.

Match Analysis & Odds

Spain are favorites to remain unbeaten vs. Japan and have dominated possession in both of their matches so far. La Roja have toyed with their opponents so far with their long build-ups and ability to keep the ball for long stretches. Here, the Japan vs. Spain odds price Spain as -120 ATS and moneyline favorites.

Again, both teams are already through to the knockout stage but will want to build momentum heading into the round of 16. Japan +0.5 comes in at -110 odds, and last won all their group-stage matches at the 2015 World Cup. Following big wins over Zambia and Costa Rica, Japan are +310 underdogs.

A draw, which Spain certainly wouldn’t complain about, displays +250 odds. Both teams have averaged over three goals per game, but under 2.5 goals sit at -150 odds here. Notably, neither team has conceded heading into this match.
