FIFA Women’s World Cup Round of 16: Japan vs. Norway Odds

Japan Yet to Concede

Norway’s Big Win Puts Them Through

Japan were one of the most dominant teams in the Women’s World Cup group stage. They won all three of their matches, scoring 11 goals and keeping three clean sheets. Meanwhile, Norway failed to win their first two games, with a loss and draw. However, the Norwegians managed to defeat the Philippines 6-0 in their group stage finale to put them through to an eighth knockout stage in nine appearances. Two former champions will meet early in the last 16 as Group C winners Japan take on Group A runners-up Norway. We’ll preview the match and take a look at the Japan vs. Norway odds.

Japan vs. Norway

Date, time:

Head-to-Head

This is the first opportunity to bet on Japan vs. Norway odds in the Women’s World Cup since 1999. Norway defeated Japan 4-0 in that group stage match but Japan hold a 6-3 record vs. Norway all-time. They last met in a 2018 friendly, which Japan won 4-1.

Japan Dominate in Group C

    • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 11
    • Group Stage Matches: 5-0 W vs. Zambia, 2-0 W vs. Costa Rica, 4-0 W vs. Spain
    • Standings: 3-0, 1st Group C

Japan’s World Cup scores so far have been excellent. They made a big statement by opening up the tournament with a 5-0 win over Zambia, as Hinata Miyazawa scored twice. Japan then sealed knockout stage qualification early with a comfortable 2-0 win over Costa Rica. Their best result yet was a 4-0 win over Spain, which seemingly came out of nowhere.

All of Japan’s goals in the match were excellent and they displayed incredibly clinical finishing. They scored with four of their five shots on target and Miyazawa scored twice once again. As of Tuesday, Miyazawa leads the Women’s World Cup Golden Boot race with four goals. Japan’s defense and goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita haven’t conceded a goal yet. Now, they look like one of the most intriguing World Cup picks, at +800 odds to win the tournament.

Both of the other times Japan managed more than one win at the World Cup, they ended up making the final. If they’re able to get past Norway, they may face the USA in the quarterfinals, which would be a blockbuster matchup. Still, Japan need to remain focused as Norway pose a big threat.

Norway Back Where They Belong

  • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 12
  • Group Stage Matches: 0-1 L vs. New Zealand, 0-0 D vs. Switzerland, 6-0 W vs. Philippines
  • Standings: 1-1-1, 2nd Group A

This was the first time in their Women’s World Cup history that Norway failed to win one of their first two group stage matches. In the World Cup opener, Norway looked out of sorts and fell 1-0 to co-hosts New Zealand. Expected to bounce back vs. Switzerland, Norway had the best chances in the match. However, they couldn’t capitalize and had to settle for a scoreless draw.

With their backs against the wall, Norway needed all three points in their group stage finale vs. the Philippines. Sophie Roman Haug scored Norway’s first goal of the tournament just six minutes in on a nicely taken volley. Haug doubled Norway’s lead just over 10 minutes later, which further opened the floodgates. Norway led 5-0 within an hour and Roman Haug completed her hat trick in stoppage time.

With the 6-0 win, Norway managed to finish ahead of New Zealand on goal difference to advance to a third straight knockout stage. Norway, who are 12th in the FIFA World Cup rankings, are one of the few teams to win the Women’s World Cup. Along with rising star Roman Haug, Guro Reiten and Caroline Graham Hansen are players to watch.

Match Analysis & Odds

The Japan vs. Norway odds are undoubtedly influenced by the fact that Norway’s Ada Hegerberg is questionable for the match. She missed Norway’s games vs. Switzerland and the Philippines and is a top-ten Norwegian scorer all-time. After winning all three of their group stage matches, Japan are -130 ATS and moneyline favorites for Saturday’s match.

Norway +0.5 comes in at even odds as they’ve avoided defeat in six of their nine matches this year. The six-goal explosion vs. the Philippines was exactly what Norway needed after they had scored just eight times in their previous eight matches. Norway are thinking upset here and they display +340 odds to pull it off. A draw is priced at +340 odds and that would mean extra time and potentially penalties.

Japan have scored in each of their last eight knockout stage matches at the Women’s World Cup. They also averaged 3.7 goals per game in the group stage as the over/under goal total is 2.5. Under 2.5 goals show -140 odds as these teams conceded just one goal combined in six group stage games.
