The second day of the Women’s World Cup kicks off with Spain vs. Costa Rica on Friday. Spain have been in excellent form heading into the tournament and are Group C favorites. Meanwhile, Costa Rica are going for their first win in just their second Women’s World Cup appearance. In an intriguing opening match, we’ll preview the Spain vs. Costa Rica odds.

Spain vs. Costa Rica

Date, time:
Location: ASky Stadium, Wellington, New Zealand

Head-to-Head

Spain and Costa Rica were in the same group in the 2015 World Cup. Their only head-to-head meeting finished 1-1. Neither team finished in the top two of the Group E World Cup table standings. So, they were both eliminated in the group stage.

Spain a Somewhat Unknown Quantity

    • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 6
    • Next Match: July 26th vs. Zambia

It’s been quite an eventful year for the Spanish Women’s National team. Last year, after losing to England in the quarterfinals of the European Championship, 15 players protested against internal conditions. They haven’t played international football since, and just three of the protesting players are on the squad. The protesting group complained about Coach Jorge Vilda, who also gets back two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas from injury.

Now in their third straight FIFA Women’s World Cup, it’s hard to know what to expect from Spain. On one hand, they still have quite a talented roster and are one of the tournament favorites. Still, they’re missing a bunch of players who could help this team contend for their first World Cup title.

Regardless, the odds of the Spain vs. Costa Rica price La Roja as heavy favorites for this match. Spain also show the third-best odds, at +650, to win the World Cup. They also defeated the USA last October in a friendly and have been in excellent form in the lead-up to the tournament. A recent friendly vs. Vietnam finished 9-0 in favor of La Roja. In 2023, Spain have put together a 7-1 record, only losing in Sydney to Australia.

Costa Rica Lose Captain

  • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 36
  • Next Match: July 25th vs. Japan

Costa Rica have returned to the Women’s World Cup for the first time since 2015. Las Ticas are still looking for their first-ever World Cup win in just their second appearance at the tournament. This time, they’ve got Spain, Japan and Zambia on their FIFA Women’s World Cup schedule.

They’ll have to make do without former captain Shirley Cruz, who was left out of the squad by coach Amelia Valverde. Cruz, who made over 100 appearances for Costa Rica, retired from club soccer at the end of the 2022-23 season but made herself available for selection for one last World Cup. Valverde does have some excellent midfielders at her disposal, with Raquel Rodriguez, Katherine Alvarado and Priscilla Chinchilla.

Rodriguez has scored an impressive 55 goals in 100 appearances and is Costa Rica’s star player. Costa Rica qualified for the World Cup by finishing in second place in Group B in the 2022 CONCACAF Women’s Championship. Since then, they’ve won just two of their 15 matches. With a 1-2-6 record in 2023, fans will hope Costa Rica are saving their best form for the biggest stage.

Match Analysis & Odds

The oddsmakers expect this one to be quite a lopsided contest and it’s not too difficult to see why. In their last four games, Spain have outscored their opponents 21-0. Meanwhile, Costa Rica have scored just six goals in nine matches this year. The Spain vs. Costa Rica odds price La Roja as 4.5 goal favorites for the Group C opener.

More than a third of Spain’s team is made up of Barcelona players. Of course, Barcelona won the 2023 UEFA Women’s Champions League final over Wolfsburg. That big game experience is expected to come in handy and Spain -4.5 comes in at -110 odds.

Meanwhile, Costa Rica +4.5 displays -120 odds. Spain are -8000 moneyline favorites, meaning bettors would need to lay $8000 on the line to return $100. A draw is also viewed as unlikely, at +2000 odds, while Costa Rica are +4000 underdogs. Bettors can also find under five goals at -130 odds for the match.
