France, No Surprise, Morocco, Nobody Saw This

⚽France vs Morocco: Game Recap⚽
Results: France 2-0 Morocco
No Moroccan upsets today. Reigning champions France booked a World Cup final date against Argentina and ended Morocco’s fairytale adventure with a hard-fought 2-0 win.
Theo Hernandez made a breakthrough just five minutes into the semi-final. The former champions had to work for their return to Sunday’s showpiece by opponents who were menacing as well as spirited. Randal Kolo Muani sealed the victory only 11 minutes from time with his first touch.
Walid Regragui’s side had already made history, becoming the first African side to reach this stage, but Didier Deschamps’ players now have the chance to make more, as they seek to become just the third team to retain their title.
Morocco’s resolute defense had conceded a lone own goal at the tournament. Still, it was breached early at Al Bayt Stadium as Hernandez pounced at the back post after a Kylian Mbappe shot prompted a scramble. Olivier Giroud hit the bar with a fierce drive soon after, and Achraf Hakimi denied Mbappe a clearance as France looked to take control. Jawad El Yamiq hit the goal frame himself with an acrobatic effort.
Morocco had stirred by the break, and their momentum continued. Sofyan Amrabat muscled into Mbappe to delight the red hordes, and Ibrahima Konate made a crucial intervention at the other end. Abderrazak Hamdallah threatened to finally provide Morocco’s moment with a mazy run, missing the finish, but another substitute, Kolo Muani, tapped in at the back post to ease frayed French nerves.
Jules Kounde scrambled off the line as Morocco pushed until the whistle for a deserved consolation, but France survived the scare; Lionel Messi and Argentina await the French on Sunday for the final.
Did We Get It Right?
Below you will find all the predictions we made before the matchup, on November 24, 2022.
Morocco Make More History
Unbelievably, Morocco have become the first African nation to make a FIFA World Cup semifinal. They put in quite a shift in a 1-0 quarterfinal win vs. Portugal and a match vs. the defending champions looms. France managed to eke out a 2-1 win over England and are two wins away from another title. Morocco have contained a bunch of star players so far but Golden Boot favorite Kylian Mbappe poses a huge threat. We’ll see Morocco’s chances to pull off yet another upset as we preview the France vs Morocco betting odds.

France: Survive Despite Mistakes
Previous Match: 2-1 W vs. England
Injuries and Suspensions: D Lucas Hernandez (Out), F Karim Benzema (Out)
Aurelien Tchouaméni’s strike from outside of the box gave France a first half lead in the quarterfinal vs. England. Then, he committed the foul that gave England a way back into the game in the second half. Harry Kane sent Hugo Lloris the wrong way on the ensuing penalty and leveled the match at 1-1. Lloris, who made a record 143rd appearance for France, had a bunch of excellent saves in the match, though. France took the lead once again as Olivier Giroud headed in an Antoine Griezmann cross. However, Theo Hernandez gave away another penalty soon after.
This time, Kane skied his penalty in the decisive moment of the match and France moved on to another semifinal. Despite not keeping a shutout the entire tournament so far, France have proven they can defend their title. The FIFA World Cup odds price them at +110 to repeat. Kylian Mbappe was quiet vs. England, but look for the -210 Golden Boot favorite to play a bigger role on Wednesday. With four goals, Giroud is tied with Lionel Messi for second on the scoring charts. Attacking midfielder Antoine Griezmann also has three assists thus far.
It’s impressive that France have made it this far after suffering so many injuries. Lucas Hernandez and Karim Benzema are the only two members of the current squad out. However, Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante, Presnel Kimpembe, Christopher Nkunku and Mike Maignan all had to pull out pre-tournament. Coach Didier Deschamps has adjusted magnificently and relied heavily on Adrien Rabiot and Tchouaméni in midfield. Theo Hernandez has also done an admirable job filling in for his brother Lucas at left back. With France’s impressive front four of Mbappe, Giroud, Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele, the potential for goals is always there.
Morocco: Magical Run Continues
Previous Match: 1-0 W vs. Portugal
Injuries and Suspensions: D Noussair Mazraoui (Questionable), D Romain Saiss (Doubtful), D Nayef Aguerd (Doubtful), F Walid Cheddira (Suspended)
Morocco’s game plan is simple but it’s been incredibly effective. Walid Regragui’s Atlas Lions sit back and defend with a low block. When they win the ball back, they start counter attacks and try to play in wingers Hakim Ziyech and Sofiane Boufal. Somehow, the Atlas Lions have conceded just one goal in five matches. They previously kept shutouts vs. Belgium, Croatia and Spain. They added Portugal to their impressive list on Saturday in an iconic 1-0 victory. Youssef En-Nesyri’s headed goal for Morocco is by far the most important goal in their country’s history.
With it, Morocco became the first Arab and African nation to make the World Cup semifinal. En-Nesyri is also now Morocco’s all-time leading scorer in the World Cup, with three goals. He hasn’t been the only standout player as Ziyech and Boufal have cooked defenders on the wings. Yassine Bounou has been immense in goal, while Romain Saiss and Achraf Hakimi have been excellent in the back. Morocco’s unsung heroes have been midfielders Azzedine Ounahi and Sofyan Amrabat, though. They’ve come up against some of the world’s best players and looked none the worse for it.
Morocco surprised many by finishing first in the Group F World Cup bracket but their semifinal run is simply stunning. The fact that they’ve only conceded on an own goal isn’t a fluke. They’ve been supremely organized defensively and have experience in key areas. However, captain Saiss was stretchered off with an injury vs. Portugal. He’s a doubt for Wednesday’s match and Morocco may have to play without both starting center backs. Nayef Aguerd missed the match vs. Portugal as well as left back Noussair Mazraoui. Jawad el Yamiq filled in well for Aguerd and Badr Benoun made several key clearances after coming on for Saiss on Saturday.
Match Analysis and Odds:
Morocco have been underdogs in four of their five matches so far but that hasn’t stopped them. The Atlas Lions are still unbeaten through five matches, with three outright wins and two draws. There’s certainly something special about this team and Walid Regragui is getting the absolute best out of them. Still, the France vs Morocco betting odds list Morocco as +675 underdogs for the match. They’ve been the best ATS bet of the tournament, at 5-0, and Morocco +1 sits at -110 odds vs. France.
They come to Wednesday’s match at -110 ATS odds and -200 moneyline odds. Despite Morocco’s excellent defensive record, France also show -120 odds to score two or more goals.
France have already lost to a North African team at Qatar 2022 in Tunisia. However, Deschamps completely rotated his squad for the match after clinching knockout stage qualification. Les Bleus have turned it on in the knockout stage, with five goals in two matches. They come to Wednesday’s match at -110 ATS odds and -200 moneyline odds. Despite Morocco’s excellent defensive record, France also show -120 odds to score two or more goals.
Only one of Morocco’s matches has finished with three or more goals but over two sits at -145 odds for this match. France do pose a huge threat but the Atlas Lions have already come up against players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Kevin de Bruyne. None of France’s five matches have finished in draws but one is listed at +300 odds for this match. Morocco’s best chance in the match is limiting France’s transition opportunities and prevent crosses. Meanwhile, France need to cut down on mistakes in their defensive third but can still win even when not playing close to their best.
