⚽Iran vs USA: Game Recap⚽
Results: Iran 0-1 USA
A match not for the faint of heart: the United States has qualified for the knockout stage of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The USMNT had to beat Iran to progress — and Christian Pulisic swept home Sergino Dest’s header across the face of the goal to win the game. However, US celebrations will be tempered by the fact that Pulisic injured himself scoring the goal.
After a lively first 15 minutes, Iran moved into a defensive shell, completely ceding possession to the Americans. After that, the US began to live in the Iranian half and eventually took the lead through a very well-worked goal scored by Pulisic in the 38th minute, but the US was otherwise far too inefficient in the final third.
Pulisic squandered an opportunity to play Josh Sargent through in the second minute. Shortly after, Timothy Weah headed a weak attempt on frame when he had time to hammer a volley in the 28th. Unfortunately, he missed the target and an open look from the area’s right side in the 33rd. Weah and Sargent combined to not even get off a shot on their two-on-two break in the 45th.
The US was less wasteful in the second half, but only because they generated fewer opportunities, as Iran pushed for an equalizer. The US held firm, but there were a few close calls. Had they been more efficient in the first half, they would have avoided the anxious finish.
The USMNT will be hoping Pulisic can return to full fitness ahead of their round of 16 clash with the Netherlands on Saturday.
Did We Get It Right?

Win or Go Home for USA
Iran got an unexpected 2-0 win over Wales on Friday to throw themselves right into the knockout stage picture. Meanwhile, USA’s hard fought draw vs. England means they need to win to advance. It should be a fiery contest when Iran and USA meet in Doha on Tuesday in the group stage finale. Let’s check the Iran vs USA betting odds and preview what should be an exciting match.

The USA and Iran have only faced off twice previously and Iran are unbeaten in those matches. They haven’t played for 22 years, when a friendly finished 1-1. The first-ever meeting between Iran and the USA was at the 1998 World Cup and Iran won 2-1. The Iran vs USA betting odds imply this could be quite a competitive match.
Iran: Leave it for Late
Standings: 1-1, 2nd
Previous Match: W, 2-0 vs. Wales
Iran suffered a big 6-2 defeat in their first match vs. England and lost their starting goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand to a concussion. Hossein Hosseini conceded six goals after coming on and earned the nod vs. Wales on Friday. He and the Iran defense held tight vs. Wales and Iran had some great chances. Ali Gholizadeh had a goal called back by VAR in the first half. Then, Iran hit the post twice after halftime.
The match remained scoreless until the closing stages. Wales keeper Wayne Hennessey received a red card for a rash challenge, which opened up the match. Iran managed to get a stunning winner in the 98th minute through Roozbeh Cheshmi and Ramin Rezaeian added another in the 101st minute. Iran are now in second place in the group and most likely just need a draw to advance.
Starting GK Beiranvand has returned to training and could be available for the group stage finale. However, starting midfielders Saeid Ezatolahi and Ahmad Noorollahi both came off with injuries and are day-to-day. Iran are not a team to be taken lightly. They finished first in the AFC Group A FIFA World Cup qualifiers standings and are the highest ranked Asian team. Iran will also have to do without Alireza Jahanbakhsh in this one, though. The forward has accumulated two yellow cards and is suspended.
USA: Unbeaten Record vs. England in World Cup Intact
Standings: 0-2-0, 3rd
Previous Match: D, 0-0 vs. England
Not too much was expected of the USA in their match vs. England on Friday. They entered as +500 underdogs and a draw showed a +315 price. Harry Kane had a good early chance blocked for the Three Lions but after that, the USA shone. Midfielder Weston McKennie was consistently getting into advanced attacking areas. He had a clear chance in the first half but got under the ball and it went over the bar. USA talisman Christian Pulisic also struck the crossbar before the halftime whistle.
The USA continued to put on the pressure in the second period. They earned a bunch of corners and created some opportunities but managed to put just one shot on target in the match. USA keeper Matt Turner looked confident both stopping shots and with his distribution. Even with a good performance, the USA could only manage to come away with a scoreless draw. The match extended the USA’s unbeaten streak vs. England in World Cups to three.
In FIFA World Cup qualifying USA drew four times and they’ve opened up their tournament with two draws. Now, only a win will be good enough to send them into the knockout stage. They’re in a similar position to 2010, when they needed a win vs. Algeria to advance and Landon Donovan scored a late winner. Heading into Tuesday’s match, the USA have a clean bill of health. Midfielder Tyler Adams and left back Antonee Robinson certainly deserve praise for their performances so far.
Match Analysis and Odds:
In this decisive Group B match, the Iran vs USA betting odds list the USA as ½-goal favorites. Their ATS and moneyline odds come in at -120. That gives them a 54.5 percent chance to win and advance to the knockout stage. Iran, who probably need just a draw but can’t necessarily risk it, show even odds to cover and tie or win.
Team Melli also sit at +345 odds to win the match. If they win, it’ll be the first time they manage to win two matches at a World Cup in six appearances. It’ll also be the first time they ever advance past the group stage. With the ongoing demonstrations in their country, even the fans have been divided. Pro-government fans allegedly harassed pro-demonstration fans before the game.
With so much on the line, under 2½ goals sits at -135 odds. The over is priced at +115 odds but don’t expect either team to take many risks
While the USA have created a lot of chances, their finishing hasn’t been great. They’ve scored just one goal through two matches and need to get on the board here. Iran have scored twice in each of their matches but their defense was incredibly porous vs. England. With so much on the line, under 2½ goals sits at -135 odds. The over is priced at +115 odds but don’t expect either team to take many risks, at least not in the first half. It’s now or never for the USA and it’ll be interesting to see if they’re up to the task.
