âš½Netherlands vs Argentina: Game Recapâš½
Results: Netherlands 2-2 Argentina
Drama, drama, drama. This is why we love the World Cup. Argentina beat the Netherlands 4-3 on penalties after a sensational 2-2 draw at the Lusail Stadium, sending Lionel Messi into the semi-final. Argentina led 2-0 before being pegged back in a match featuring 14 yellow cards.
A moment of brilliance created by Messi provided the opener for Argentina. There were six players between him and the goal, and nothing seemed on. Even right-wing-back Molina, cutting inside, must have felt he was moving in an offside position. But, with a glance and a flick of his left boot, the Argentina superstar played Molina on goal.
Then, after 70 minutes, Messi again converted a penalty when Marcus Acuna was fouled by Denzel Dumfries, gently chipping the ball past the Dutch keeper. The Netherlands lacked fight for long periods, having only had one shot before the penalty put them two goals behind. However, Wout Weghorst’s header after 82 minutes, their first shot on target, gave them hope.
A brawl broke out after Leandro Paredes’ strong challenge of Nathan Ake, and he hit the ball toward the Netherlands bench. It was a bench-clearing moment with everyone on the edge of their seats.
Cody Gakpo hit a late free-kick into the wall, and, after 100 minutes, it looked as if he would attempt another. However, Teun Koopmeiners rolled the ball under the wall towards Weghorst, who forced the ball beyond Emi Martinez into the Argentina net. Then it was on to extra time.
Substitute Lautaro Martinez had the first clear chance of extra time, thundering a cut-back into the chest of Virgil van Dijk at the start of the second period. However, a spinning effort, with two minutes left, forced Noppert into another save before Messi’s effort was deflected inches wide. The next corner from Angel di Maria almost snuck inside Noppert’s post before Enzo Fernandez hit the base of the bar with a last-gasp snapshot.
Penalty Shootout
Taking first for the Netherlands, Martinez saved Van Dijk’s spot-kick. Messi rolled the ball past Noppert in response.
Martinez then saved again from Berghuis, diving to his left this time. But, once more, Argentina responded by scoring through Paredes.
Koopmeiners scored for the Netherlands before Gonzalo Montiel was also successful. Weghorst, the hero of standard time, needed to score and did.
That gave Fernandez a chance to win it. The 21-year-old, with a straight run-up, sent it wide of Noppert’s right-hand post. However, Luuk de Jong still had to score and sent Martinez the wrong way.
Once more, Argentina was one penalty away from victory. Martinez blasted the ball into the top corner to send Argentina into the semi-final.

Long History Between the Oranje and La Albiceleste
Two of soccer’s most iconic teams will meet on Friday as the Netherlands take on Argentina. A semifinals berth is on the line in what should be an excellent match. Should Argentina win, Lionel Messi will be just two wins away from winning an elusive first World Cup trophy. It should by no means be an easy match for Argentina, though. The Netherlands have been efficient with their scoring chances in the tournament and can beat teams in multiple ways. We’ll take a look at the Netherlands vs Argentina betting odds for Friday’s quarterfinals matchup

Argentina and the Netherlands have met on nine occasions and this is the sixth time to take the Netherlands vs Argentina betting odds in the World Cup. They last faced off in the 2014 World Cup semifinals. After a scoreless draw, Argentina managed to win 4-2 in penalties and advance to the final. La Albiceleste also defeated the Oranje 3-1 in the 1978 final. Still, the Netherlands are unbeaten in 90 minutes in the last five matches dating back to 1998.
Netherlands: Dumfries Torches USA
Previous Match: 3-1 W vs. USA
Injuries and Suspensions: None Reported
Right wing back Denzel Dumfries was involved in all three of the Netherlands’ goals vs. the USA. He was the man of the match in the round of 16 tie as he scored Netherlands’ third goal and assisted the other two. The Oranje found success on the wings vs. the USA and all three of their goals came on crosses. Louis van Gaal’s five at the back formation is quite conservative but it does allow for attacking width.
The Netherlands have conceded just two goals in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and Van Gaal’s preferred center back pairing has been Jurrien Timber, Virgil van Dijk and Nathan Ake. Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt has been relegated to the bench. Meanwhile, Cody Gakpo has been the breakout star of the tournament as the PSV forward scored in the first three games. He still has an outside shot to win the Golden Boot but trails Kylian Mbappe by two goals.
A healthy Memphis Depay also caused a bunch of problems for the USA on Saturday. The Barcelona forward got the first goal of the match and consistently looked threatening. Daley Blind also scored and provided an assist vs. the USA and he’s been a steady presence at left wing back. Expect Van Gaal to call on Frenkie de Jong in midfield once again with some combination of Teun Koopmeiners, Davy Klaassen and Marten de Roon.
Argentina: Messi Excellent in Round of 16
Previous Match: 2-1 W vs. Australia
Injuries and Suspensions: F Papu Gomez (Day-to-Day), F Angel di Maria (Day-to-Day)
A moment of brilliance from Lionel Messi gave Argentina a first half lead vs. Australia in the round of 16. Australia goalkeeper Mathew Ryan could do nothing about Messi’s shot from just inside the box. Messi was all-around excellent vs. Australia and incredibly, it was his first ever knockout stage goal. He glided past Australian defenders and picked out his teammates with ease.
Even though Messi put in a man of the match performance, Argentina struggled to close out the match. Julian Alvarez did get a second Argentina goal, as Rodrigo de Paul pressured Ryan into a grievous error. Then, Australia coach Graham Arnold made a triple substitution and it changed the match. Socceroos substitute Craig Goodwin struck a shot that hit Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez and flew into the back of the net. Australia had other chances to equalize, most notably from Aziz Behich and Awer Mabil. Argentina held on to fight another day.
Next up on Argentina’s FIFA schedule is the Netherlands and only France and Brazil have shorter odds to win the tournament than La Albiceleste. Argentina might be short on wingers on this one as Angel di Maria sat out vs. the Netherlands with a quad injury. His replacement, Papu Gomez, also came off in the match and is listed as day-to-day. If they sit out, Lionel Scaloni could choose to go with a two striker formation and pair Messi with Julian Alvarez or Lautaro MartÃnez
Match Analysis and Odds:

Meanwhile, the Netherlands are -140 favorites to cover and draw or win the match. They’re unbeaten in their first four matches at Qatar 2022 and Louis van Gaal’s side is 2-1-1 ATS. The last two World Cup matches between these teams have finished in scoreless draws. Plus, only one of the last six meetings has finished with more than two goals. Still, both teams have looked threatening offensively and neither has been shut out up to this point in the tournament. The over/under goal total is two for the match. Although goals have been rare in this fixture, the over is implied to be more likely, at -135 odds. For those wanting to bet on another scoreless draw, no goal in the match sits at +650 odds.
While Argentina have already managed to shut out the likes of Poland and Mexico, the Netherlands haven’t played terribly strong sides. This will be a much bigger challenge for them than any of their previous matches and a true test of their quality. Note that the Oranje take a 19-game unbeaten streak into this match, though. So, they certainly aren’t to be underestimated despite their underdog status. It could also be a boost for the Netherlands if they don’t have to go up against the ever-creative Angel di Maria. Still, Argentina have scored two goals in their last three matches and this is Messi’s last stand after all.
