Group A Finale

âš½Netherlands vs Qatar: Game Recapâš½

Results: Netherlands 2-0 Qatar

No one expected anything else. The Netherlands finished top of Group A after overcoming Qatar 2-0 on Tuesday. Qatar had already been eliminated, but this was just the final nail in the coffin.

Cody Gakpo put his team ahead in the 26th minute of the game, dribbling through a massed Qatari defense before firing a right-footed strike into the bottom corner from the edge of the area. The forward has been in fine form throughout the tournament, and this was another great game from him. So far, he has scored in every match for the Netherlands, and it doesn’t look like he is stopping.

Frenkie de Jong then doubled the Netherlands’ lead just after the break. The midfielder latched onto a parried shot before poking the ball into the Qatar net. The Netherlands then had a disallowed goal due to a Gakpo handball in the build-up.

Without wanting to denigrate Qatar’s performances at this tournament and their talent going forward, the moment they conceded, they were never likely to come back and get the dream win or draw they might have wanted from their home tournament.

Gakpo’s early strike ended any genuine resistance or hope they could get a result. As a result, Qatar became the first host nation to lose all three group games.

The Netherlands top Group A and will take on the US in the Round of 16 on Saturday morning. In a match that could go either way, it will be interesting to see if Gakpo and the Netherlands can continue their run of form.

Netherlands: Put in Disappointing Performance vs. Ecuador

Standings: 1-1-0, 2nd
Previous Match: D, 1-1 vs. Ecuador

Ecuador outshot the Netherlands 15 to two in their Friday matchup. Luckily, the Oranje scored with one of their two shots. PSV sensation Cody Gakpo picked up a Davy Klaassen pass and fired in a left footed strike early in the first half. It was Gakpo’s second of the tournament but it wasn’t enough to give the Netherlands the win. Ecuador had a goal called back for obstruction in the first half but equalized in the second through Enner Valencia. Overall, the Netherlands played disappointing football.

The Netherlands are tied for the Group A lead in the FIFA World Cup standings after two matches. The Oranje are level on points with Ecuador, with the same goal difference and number of goals scored. They will want to win Group A so they can avoid the Group B winners, likely England, in the round of 16. It’ll take bettering Ecuador’s result vs. Senegal on Tuesday.

There are certain circumstances in which the Netherlands could be knocked out but they’d all take a loss to Qatar. That would be a disaster for Louis van Gaal and the Netherlands, and the odds are in their favor. The Oranje sit at -20000 odds to make the knockout stage and show -450 odds to win the group. Since the World Cup switched to a group and knockout stage format, the Netherlands have never failed to advance to the latter.

Qatar: Hosts Fail to Advance

Standings: 0-2, 4th
Previous Match: L, 1-3 vs. Senegal

Hosts Qatar put on a jittery performance in their first match vs. Ecuador and couldn’t get anything going. It ended in a 2-0 defeat as they became the first host nation to ever lose their World Cup opener. They played better in their second match vs. Senegal but couldn’t catch a break. It appeared that Akram Afif was fouled in the box but it didn’t lead to a penalty. Just before the stroke of halftime, Senegal’s Boulaye Dia gave the Lions of Teranga the lead.

Senegal added a second after the break and Qatar responded with their first-ever World Cup goal. Substitute Mohammed Muntari played with energy in the first match and came through with a header goal vs. Senegal. Still, Senegal added a third and doomed Qatar to an early World Cup exit. They’ve set more unwanted records, like becoming the first host nation to be mathematically eliminated after two matches. Qatar were also the first team in the tournament to be eliminated.

There’s still a lot to play for in front of the home fans as Qatar would be ecstatic if they got their first World Cup win. The Netherlands vs Qatar odds price the hosts as big underdogs to do so. Qatar’s defense, despite conceding three times, looked a lot more compact in the first half vs. Senegal. They’ll likely be stretched vs. the Netherlands.

Match Analysis and Odds:

The draw the Netherlands managed vs. Ecuador extended their unbeaten streak in all competitions to 17. Now, Louis van Gaal and the Netherlands will expect nothing short of a win in this match. The Oranje are 5-0 in World Cup all-time vs. teams in the AFC and the Netherlands vs Qatar odds imply they’ll stay perfect. The Netherlands enter the match as two-goal favorites vs. a leaky Qatar defense.

The Dutch are expected to cover, at -135 odds. Qatar show just +115 odds to cover and +1950 moneyline odds. There’s certainly not too much value on the Netherlands’ moneyline and it could be a better option as part of parlays. They come in at -675 odds to win and a draw is sits at +675 odds.

Qatar aren’t expected to add to their goal tally, at -160 odds to fail to score. Meanwhile, under three sits at +110 odds.

Qatar have already conceded five goals through two matches and keeping a shutout here will be an incredibly difficult task. This is expected to be a goalfest and over three goals sits at -130 odds. Qatar aren’t expected to add to their goal tally, at -160 odds to fail to score. Meanwhile, under three sits at +110 odds. The Netherlands’ secondary scoring outlets haven’t come through but they’ll have plenty of opportunities to build confidence here.
