UEFA Foes Meet in Round of 16

âš½Portugal vs Switzerland: Game Recapâš½

Results: Portugal 6-1 Switzerland

Cristiano Ronaldo, who? It took just 17 minutes for eventual hat-trick hero Goncalo Ramos to prove why Fernando Santos’ decision to drop a confident Cristiano Ronaldo was the right call.

Ronaldo had to make do with a place on the substitutes’ bench, ending a run of 31 consecutive starts for Portugal at a major tournament that began back in 2008. Then, Portugal scored five goals before Ronaldo came on.

Portugal opened the scoring when Benfica’s Ramos smashed the ball past Yann Sommer just 17 minutes into making his first senior start for his country. Ramos entered the tournament as the top scorer in the Portuguese Primeira, having netted nine goals in 11 games for Benfica.

Veteran center-back Pepe had doubled his side’s lead when he nodded home a Bruno Fernandes corner to help set up a quarter-final tie against Morocco on Saturday.

Ramos made it 3-0 after 51 minutes by directing the ball past Sommer from a Diogo Dalot cross before the Benfica man turned from goalscorer to provider to assist Raphael Guerreiro.

Manuel Akanji pulled one back, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation goal for the Swiss, with Ramos going on to claim his hat-trick goal.

Ronaldo entered the fray in the 74th minute but could not get his name on the scoresheet. Fellow substitute Rafael Leao rounded off the scoring in stoppage time to make it 6-1.

Did We Get It Right?

Below you will find all the predictions we made before the matchup, on December 03, 2022.

Ronaldo’s Last Chance

It’s clear to see how much this World Cup means to Cristiano Ronaldo. While he’s been ousted from Manchester United, the legendary forward is still a key player for his native Portugal. He has one more chance to get an elusive World Cup trophy and the knockout stage journey starts with Switzerland. This figures to be a tricky match for Portugal, as Switzerland have been competitive with them in recent years. We’ll take a look at the Portugal vs Switzerland odds to see who’s favored and preview the match.

Jun 2019:Portugal 3-1 Switzerland

Portugal and Switzerland have met quite frequently as of late. They were recently in the same UEFA Nations League group and split their matches. Portugal won 4-0 at home in June and Switzerland managed a 1-0 win one week later in the reverse fixture. This is just the second time ever to bet on the Portugal vs Switzerland odds in the World Cup, though. These teams met all the way back in the 1938 FIFA World Cup and Switzerland came out on top, 2-1. The Swiss lead the all-time series 11 to 9 and there have been five draws. Portugal have won three of the last five meetings, though.

PORPortugal: Group H Winners Despite Closing Loss

Previous Match: 1-2 L vs. South Korea
Injuries and Suspensions: D Nuno Mendes (Out), D Danilo Pereira (Day-to-Day), M Otavio (Day-to-Day)

Fernando Santos’ Portugal are in the round of 16 for the third time in the last four World Cups. With Portugal already through heading into their last match vs South Korea, Fernando Santos was able to rest four of his starters.

Joao Felix, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias all started on the bench and only Silva came on. Portugal went up 1-0 in the match as Ricardo Horta got just his second international goal. Later, the ball bounced off of Cristiano Ronaldo’s back on a defensive corner and it fell straight to a South Korean player, who finished it. Both teams had chances but South Korea stunningly got a late winner through Hwang-hee Chan to come in second in the group.

Despite the loss, Portugal advanced as Group H winners and show +1200 FIFA World Cup betting odds to win the tournament. When Bruno Fernandes has played he’s been one of the best players at the tournament. He scored both goals in Portugal’s 2-0 win vs. Uruguay and assisted two goals in the win vs Ghana. Ronaldo doesn’t have the engine he used to have but he’s still incredibly dangerous in and around the penalty area. With Felix and Silva on the wings, the South Korean fullbacks have their work cut out for them.

Portugal often underperform at major tournaments, save for their Euro 2016 win, but the talent is consistently there. If they win, they may have quite a difficult quarterfinals matchup, though. The winner of this match will take on the winner of Morocco vs Spain on December 10th. Ronaldo, at 37 years old, is well aware this is his last hurrah so expect international soccer’s top all-time goal scorer to be ready.

SUISwitzerland: Advance With Comeback Win

Previous Match: 3-2 W vs Serbia
Injuries and Suspensions: GK Yann Sommer (Probable), D Nico Elvedi (Probable)

Switzerland got bad news just before their crucial group stage finale vs Serbia. Goalkeeper Yann Sommer and key defender Nico Elvedi were ruled out with illnesses, which certainly hurt their chances. Still, Xherdan Shaqiri returned from a one-game absence to score the first goal of the match. Serbia swiftly got back into the match as Aleksandar Mitrović and Dusan Vlahovic scored within ten minutes of each other. Just before the half, though, Breel Embolo got an equalizer for Switzerland in a back and forth match.

After the break, Ruben Vargas played a brilliant backheel pass to Remo Freuler, who scored a third goal for Switzerland. The Swiss held on for a second straight World Cup win vs. Serbia to finish second in Group G behind Brazil. The FIFA 22 betting odds list Switzerland at +6600 odds to win their first ever World Cup. Lately, the three certainties in life have been death, taxes, and Switzerland reaching the last 16 of major tournaments! They’ve reached the knockout stage in their last five appearances at the World Cup and the UEFA Euro.

Not typically a high scoring team, Switzerland flexed their offensive muscles vs Serbia. Embolo has scored twice in three games but going up against Ruben Dias and Pepe could certainly be a challenge. Midfielder and captain Granit Xhaka is a key player who can play passes in between lines. Shaqiri might also be past his prime but he’s still got a moment of brilliance or two in his locker.

Match Analysis and Odds:

Heading into Tuesday’s match, Portugal are listed as ½-goal favorites. The Portugal vs Switzerland odds price them at -115 moneyline and ATS odds. The last six meetings between the two sides have been split and five of the last six have ended in a shutout win for either team. Switzerland will feel this match is for the taking after defeating Portugal in June but show just +360 odds to win and +105 ATS odds.

Over two goals sits at -140 odds in what’s expected to be a match that comes down to the wire.

Draws have been quite rare in this fixture, with just one in the last ten meetings. Regardless, a draw comes in at +240 odds. It’s not shocking that Portugal have just a 53.5 percent implied chance of victory. Switzerland managed to neutralize Brazil’s attacking threats for most of their match but eventually fell 1-0. They’re a top level team that managed to knock out France in penalties in last year’s Euros. Punters expecting a walk in the park for Portugal could be in for an unpleasant surprise.

The over/under goal total is quite low, at just two goals. Six of the last eight matches between the two teams have finished with two goals or fewer. Still, Portugal managed five goals in their first two matches and their matches have often evolved to be wide open in the closing stages. Over two goals sits at -140 odds in what’s expected to be a match that comes down to the wire. It seems surreal that Ronaldo’s international career could end here and Switzerland will be itching to make it happen.
