Switzerland vs. Cameroon Odds & Recap

Early Morning Group G Opener

⚽Switzerland vs Cameroon: Game Recap⚽

Results: Switzerland 1 – 0 Cameroon

Breel Embolo was the match-winner in Group G’s opening game, as Switzerland beat a strong Cameroon side 1-0.

Cameroon had several good chances to take a first-half lead, with the African side starting the match on the front foot. Karl Toko Ekambi had also been prevented with a goalscoring chance but failed to convert. Minutes later, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting missed an ample opportunity after 14 minutes, breaking through the Swiss back line but seeing his shot saved by goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

Switzerland defender Silvan Widmer then put in a tremendous last-ditch tackle midway through the second half, preventing Toko Ekambi from almost certainly scoring. The Swiss then had two chances themselves to score just before the break. However, near-identical in-swinging Ruben Vargas’s corners caused problems for the Cameroon defense, with Nico Elvedi and Manuel Akanji sending headers wide of the post.

Embolo struck for Switzerland early in the second half after good work from former Liverpool man Xherdan Shaqiri. The Swiss forward scored against the country of his birth, with muted celebrations following.

Switzerland appeared to take the initiative after the opening goal

However, it took an instinctive save from Andre Onana after a close-range Vargas effort to keep the score at 1-0 on 66 minutes. Embolo then went very close from the resulting corner, with only a key interception from Andre-Frank Anguissa preventing the Monaco forward from adding a second goal.

Momentum on Switzerland’s Side

  • Switzerland – Upcoming Matches: Nov. 28 vs. Brazil, Dec. 2 vs. Serbia

Switzerland are carrying a ton of momentum into the World Cup. They won their last three matches of the UEFA Nations League and defeated Portugal and Spain in the process. They’re also relatively fresh off of a Euro quarterfinals appearance. While Switzerland aren’t the most dynamic side, they are well organized and typically don’t make many mistakes.

It’ll be difficult for Switzerland to win a group with Brazil in it and that shows in the odds to win Group G. Switzerland show the second-best odds to win the group, behind Brazil, at +450. The Nati have made the round of 16 in four of their last five World Cup appearances and are usually good for a win or two at major tournaments. Their best opportunity in the Group Stage will be in their opener vs. Cameroon.

There aren’t many surprises in the Swiss side coach Murat Yakin picked. Yann Sommer will be in goal and mainstays Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka are back for another World Cup. Most players who figure to get significant playing time have a bunch of experience.

Haris Seferovic and Breel Embolo are solid options upfront, Meanwhile, Manuel Akanji and Nico Elvedi should be the anchors at the back. Along with Xhaka, Yakin can call on midfielders like Djibril Sow, Remo Freuler and Denis Zakaria. This is a solid all-around Swiss side but they’re perhaps lacking in players who can create moments of individual brilliance.

Indomitable Lions Not Living Up to Nickname

  • Cameroon – Upcoming Matches: Nov. 28 vs. Serbia, Dec. 2 vs. Brazil

Cameroon’s performance at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations as the host nation was rather impressive. They scored 14 goals, which was the most in the tournament, and finished in third place. Captain and striker Vincent Aboubakar took home the Golden Boot, with an impressive eight goals in seven matches. Karl Toko Ekambi was another standout performer for the Indomitable Lions as he scored five goals.

Following the tournament, coach Toni Conceicao was replaced by Rigobert Song. Song led Cameroon to victory in the CAF playoffs over Algeria but the Indomitable Lions’ form has been shaky since.

They’ve won just one of their four matches since March and lost to Uzbekistan 2-0. It’s no wonder Cameroon have just +350 World Cup 2022 odds to make it out of the group. They’ve gone 0-3 in their last two World Cup appearances.

Still, there are definite bright spots in the soccer team. Midfielder Andre Zambo Anguissa has been excellent for Napoli this season. Striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting can’t stop scoring for Bayern Munich and gives Song another option along with Aboubakar and Toko Ekambi. Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo also switched international allegiances from France to represent Cameroon at Qatar 2022.

Match Analysis and Odds:

A quick look at Switzerland vs. Cameroon odds shows that Switzerland are priced at -140 odds to win. Their moneyline is the same as their -140 odds to cover the ½-goal spread. Meanwhile, Cameroon show +120 odds to cover and +450 odds to win their first World Cup match for 20 years.

Cameroon sit at -120 odds to get on the scoresheet. Over two goals also shows a -135 price compared to +115 for under two.

Draws have been quite frequent for Switzerland in major tournaments recently and a deadlock is listed at +240 odds. The Nati have kept just one shutout in eight 2022 matches and Cameroon sit at -120 odds to get on the scoresheet. Over two goals also shows a -135 price compared to +115 for under two.

This will be just the second time Switzerland face an African team at the World Cup. They managed to defeat Togo 2-0 in 2006 but haven’t faced another CAF side since. Cameroon’s all-time record vs. European teams in the World Cup is quite abysmal. They only have one win in 13 matches, with five draws and seven losses. History isn’t on the Indomitable Lions’ side but they do have some dangerous players.
