⚽Uruguay vs South Korea: Game Recap⚽

Results :Uruguay 0 – 0 South Korea

Uruguay and South Korea played out to a 0-0 in their opening match of the World Cup in Qatar.

Both teams lined up with some of their star names on show, with veteran Luis Suarez leading the way for Uruguay while Son Heung-min played in South Korea’s forward line.

Both sides had great opportunities to go into the lead at half-time. South Korea’s Hwang Ui-jo was free in the 18-yard box when a low cross found him unmarked. However, the 30-year-old hit the ball high over the bar from close range and wasted his chance. For Uruguay, Facundo Pellistri whipped in a beautiful corner that found Diego Godin, who jumped clear of his marker to get his head on the ball, only to smash the post.

In the second half, South Korea looked threatening on the counter-attack and were more energetic than their opponents, but failed to capitalize on their organized performance. Uruguay came close to snatching it at the end, after Federico Valverde smacked the outside of the post with a 30-yard effort.

Bettors who went a draw and bet on the under must be feeling good right now. Uruguay were the favorites heading into the match at -125. However, South Korea came in as the sizable underdog at +400 with a draw paying out at +245. The over/under was at two goals with -130 for the over and +115 for the under.

Overall, Uruguay will feel they need to improve before their next match in Group H against Portugal, while South Korea will be encouraged by their performance.

However, South Korea did win the most recent meeting 2-1, in 2018. This will be the third-ever fixture between the two sides on the Schedule FIFA. Uruguay defeated South Korea 2-1 in the 2010 World Cup round of 16 as Luis Suarez scored a brace. La Celeste also won 1-0 in a Group E showdown at the 1990 FIFA World Cup. More than three goals have only ever been scored once in eight meetings.

Experienced Uruguay in Rare Form

  • Uruguay – Upcoming Matches: Nov. 28 vs. Portugal, Dec. 2 vs. Ghana

In CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers, Uruguay won just two of their first seven matches. For a while, it looked like they wouldn’t come close to qualifying for the World Cup. Longtime coach Oscar Tabarez was dismissed after 15 years on the job. Diego Alonso then took over and immediately won his first four matches in charge. Luis Suarez led the way with eight goals as Uruguay qualified for a fourth straight World Cup.

This is undoubtedly an aging Uruguay team but there are some key younger pieces. Real Madrid’s Fede Valverde has looked like one of the best players in the world in recent months. He can slot into the midfield or on the wing. Liverpool signed striker Darwin Nunez for big money for a reason and center back Ronald Araujo has been solid for Barcelona when fit. Rodrigo Bentancur is also an integral part of Tottenham Hotspur’s midfield.

Still, there will be a lot of reliance on players over 30. Goalkeeper Fernando Muslera is 36, Suarez and Edinson Cavani are 35 and Sebastian Coates is 32. In their last hurrah, Uruguay show -250 World Cup betting odds to advance out of the group. It won’t be easy, with matches vs. South Korea, Portugal and Ghana on the cards.

South Korea Not Afraid of the Moment

  • South Korea – Upcoming Matches: Nov. 28 vs. Ghana, Dec. 2 vs. Portugal

South Korea easily qualified for a tenth straight World Cup. They lost just one match in AFC qualifiers and only conceded three goals in ten third round matches. They haven’t made the knockout stage since 2010 and it’ll once again be an uphill battle in a tough group, though. Fortunately, they have one of the world’s best attackers, in Heung-Min Son. Son won a share of the Premier League’s golden boot last season and is by far South Korea’s active leading scorer.

Son also was the joint-leading scorer in AFC qualifiers, with four goals. He’s the focal point of this South Korea team and big things will be expected of him. That’s not to say there aren’t other capable players on the team. Wolves’ forward Hwang Hee-Chan is nicknamed “The Bull” for a reason. Defender Min-Jae Kim has been immense for Serie A leaders Napoli this season and midfielder Lee Jae-Sung has a lot of experience.

The Uruguay vs. South Korea Odds price the Taegeuk Warriors as underdogs. Still, who could forget South Korea’s incredible upset win over defending World Cup champions Germany in 2018? This is a team that plays with a strong fighting spirit and they won’t back down to anyone.

Match Analysis and Odds:

The Uruguay vs. South Korea Odds price favorites Uruguay at -125 odds to cover the ½-goal spread. Their ATS odds are the same as their moneyline odds. Meanwhile, South Korea +½ sits at +105 odds but they have suffered some big losses this year. Japan defeated South Korea 3-0 in July and Brazil demolished the Taegeuk Warriors 5-1 in June. South Korea show +400 odds to win a second straight match vs. Uruguay and a draw is priced at +245 odds.

In their two most recent friendlies leading up to the World Cup, South Korea defeated both Cameroon and Iceland by a 1-0 scoreline.

Uruguay have just one loss in 2022, in a September friendly to Iran. La Celeste’s defense has been stellar this year as they’ve managed seven shutouts in nine matches. With a 7-1-1 record in 2022, Uruguay come into Qatar 2022 as one of the world’s most in-form teams. In their two most recent friendlies leading up to the World Cup, South Korea defeated both Cameroon and Iceland by a 1-0 scoreline.

Both defenses have often been good but over two goals comes in at -130 odds for the match. Bettors can take the under at a +110 price. With Uruguay keeping clean sheets more often than not, South Korea under ½ might be a popular bet at +105 odds.
