Xander Schauffele is our Player of the Week following his second major win of the year at the Open Championship. We have been impressed by Xander Schauffele’s stats, which saw him shoot -6 on the final day to win at Royal Troon.
Having spent much of his career finishing second in the majors, scoring two major wins in 2024 officially makes him one of the best players in the world.
Is Schauffele Better than Scheffler?
Schauffele and Scottie Scheffler represent Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics, but which player is better? We’re making a case that Schauffele is the better player on the big stage, but we’re unsure how many would agree.
Scheffler has been on a winning streak on the PGA Tour but has only two major wins on his record, both coming at The Masters. This is the same number of major wins as Schauffele, and we think he has a mortgage on Player of the Year following wins at the Open Championship and PGA Championship.
The PGA Championship leaderboard was packed with the best names in golf, and he held off Bryson DeChambeau by one stroke, and that form was franked with DeChambeau winning the U.S. Open.
Shooting 65 on Sunday to win at Royal Troon was a massive display of golf, and he scored by two strokes to beat Justin Rose and Billy Horschel.
Scheffler finished behind Schauffele in three of the four majors, so we think Schauffele is a better golfer when it counts.
Xander Schauffele’s stats don’t lie, so there is a strong case for Schauffele being the best golfer in the world.
Scheffler wins on the PGA Tour but has yet to win the PGA Championship, U.S. Open, or The Open Championship – Schauffele has two of those titles.
Defending His Olympic Title
Schauffele is also the defending Olympic Games gold medalist along with his two major titles. The 30-year-old is playing a level of golf unseen by him throughout his illustrious career, and his father Stefan believes he’ll be next to win the grand slam according to the latest professional golfer news.
“It’s up to you guys to take a look at the statistics and see who has the greatest potential of being the next career grand-slammer because I think he’s the one who has the game. Yes, I’m being subjective but I think, objectively, you will arrive at the same conclusion,” Schauffele said.
The American could be the next to win consecutive Olympic gold medals, having beaten Rory Sabbatini by one stroke. He became the first American to win Olympic gold in golf since 1900, so he is breaking boundaries on the golf course.
Schauffele is on the second line of betting to win gold in Paris at +600. Money has come for him following his second major win, and he overtook Rory McIlroy as the second favorite.
Going Low at the Majors
A statistic was released recently and it shines a light on how good the 30-year-old’s year has been. Xander Schauffele’s stats have him at -32 in the majors in 2024, including a -1 at the Masters, -21 at the PGA, -1 at the U.S. Open, and -9 at the Open Championship.
There was a 15-shot gap between Schauffele and second-placed Scheffler, who was let down by a +8 showing at the U.S. Open.
The list had only four players below par for all four majors, including Collin Morikawa and Shane Lowry.
One tournament can ruin your score, but consistency is key. New Zealand’s Ryan Fox was the 13th-ranked player and he shot a combined +26, so there was a big margin between 13th and Schauffele in first.
His golf scores have been incredible, and the nine-time PGA Tour winner is only growing in confidence.
Having long been the bridesmaid in majors, including posting 12 top 10 finishes before breaking through at the PGA Championship. A lesser golfer could have capitulated, so it’s good to see him cashing in.
Schauffele is our Player of the Week, and when this year is done, we believe he’ll be ranked the best golfer of 2024.
