Already With One Major in 2024, Scheffler is the Favorite for US Open

Scottie Scheffler is on a level at the PGA Tour last seen during the heydey of Tiger Woods. A quick look at Scottie Scheffler’s stats shows that he has won five of his last eight starts after overcoming a triple bogey to win at the Memorial Tournament last week.

The golf stats have the 27-year-old Scheffler as the clear No. 1 ranked player heading into the U.S. Open at Pinehurst as the favorite to win his first US Open after finishing seventh in 2021, second in 2022, and third in 2023.

One of his top challengers won’t be there as Jon Rahm was forced to withdraw from the tournament.

The golf odds this week have Scheffler priced at +280 to win at the US Open. Leading the chase behind Scheffler are:

  • Xander Schauffele (+1000)
  • Rory McIlroy (+1050)
  • Colin Morikawa (+1350)
  • Viktor Hovland (+1600)
  • Bryson DeChambeau (+1750)

Scheffler looks to make more noise with his driving on the course rather than his driving to the course after he was arrested on his way to work at the PGA Championship in Louisville.

He was released in time to make his tee time and the charges were later dropped but that is some drama that Scheffler could do without at this tournament.

The tournament begins on Thursday. The first round will be televised by USA Network with streaming available via Peacock from 5-8 p.m. ET. There will be a live stream of the top groups (including Scheffler’s) on USOpen.com.

Peacock will have Friday’s coverage from 6:30 a.m.-1 p.m. ET before NBC takes over. Once again, the featured groups will be followed via live stream at USOpen.com.

On Saturday and Sunday, USA Network will have the morning coverage with NBC televising the rest of the tournament.

Checking All The Boxes

When looking at Scottie Scheffler’s stats, Scheffler leads the PGA Tour in greens in regulation and strokes gained and is second in driving accuracy as it is hard to find much fault with his game at the current time. He is the easy choice as the golf Player of the Week.

Scheffler has played in 13 golf tournaments this year. He has made the cut in all of them with 12 top-10 finishes, five wins, and two runner-up showings.

Scheffler hasn’t been winning second-tier events as his victories have come at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, The Players Championship, the Masters (which we won for a second time), the RBC Heritage, and the Memorial.

Scheffler’s best round came on the final day of the tournament in six of those events.

Although he had some rare final-round struggles at the Memorial Tournament, he comes into the tournament with plenty of confidence.

“I always remind myself walking to the tee that I’m prepared for this, I did everything I could in order to play well,” Scheffler said in a story posted on the PGA Tour’s official site. “I checked all the boxes when I step up there on the tee.”

The Pairing to Top All Pairings

There will be plenty of star power in the group that Scheffler is playing in as Scheffler, Schauffele, and McIlroy.
They are the top three ranked players in the world.

There is quite a gap between No. 1 and No. 2 with Scheffler having more than twice as many points as Schauffele, the No. 2-ranked player. Keep that in mind when it comes to Scottie Scheffler’s stats.

Schauffele is the reigning winner at the PGA Championship. He has finished in the top 10 in four of his last six majors.

McIlroy won the 2011 U.S. Open and is a winner of four majors and five times the PGA Tour named him the player of the year.

The group featuring three rather high-profile golf players is set to go off on Thursday at 1:14 p.m. ET from the first tee.

Eye On The Prize

Scheffler has never won more than one major in a year on the PGA Tour.

He could change that this week as he has -125 odds of winning at least two majors in 2024. The next closest challenger is Schauffele at +400. Scheffler also has -1000 odds to make the cut at all four majors in 2024.

A better option might be roll with the -125 odds for Scheffler to finish in the top 10 in all four majors.

Scheffler has been in contention at the U.S. Open before and he hopes to use those lessons to seal the deal this week.

“I think a lot of it’s patience,” Scheffler told the media. “There are certain areas of the golf courses where you can’t really fake it.

“You just have to step up there and hit great golf shots. There are certain holes out here where, like especially some of the par-3’s where there’s not really a place where there is a good miss, it’s just you just better just get up there and you better hit it right where you’re looking or else you’re going to be in big trouble.”

“A lot of that is just being committed to what you’re doing. I can’t really worry about where the ball is going to go because I am going to hit a lot of really good shots this week that just don’t work out, and you’re going to make bogeys hitting good shots. That’s just the nature of how difficult the golf course is.”
