Wide-Open WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play

The Defending Champion is Best-Backed

Scottie Scheffler has been best-backed to win the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play this week. However, the best players in the world tee off.

We love head-to-head matches, so throw out the recent golf betting stats, because it rarely matters in this format.

There is value throughout the market, so golf odds this week are worth snapping up.

Day on the Verge of Winning

Jason Day, a former world number one, is a particularly intriguing pick for the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play.

Day has battled injuries throughout his career, but he has recently worked through a back injury and could be in winning form soon.

“The goal is to try and get back to No.1,” Day said. “And whatever wins come in that, that’s trying to get back to No.1. If it happens sooner, great. If it doesn’t, I’m just going to keep working hard and hopefully it happens somewhere down the road.”

One of the reasons Day is a strong match play player is that he is able to focus on beating just one opponent. In stroke play events, there are many players to contend with, but in match play, it’s just one-on-one.

The Australian has experience playing in the President’s Cup and has won the tournament twice before, so he knows what it takes to succeed in this format.

Day’s odds of +2500 offer good value, especially considering his match play pedigree. If he is able to get hot at the right time, he could easily make a deep run in the tournament.

Class Rises to the Top

Another player worth considering is Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman won the tournament in 2015 and has plenty of match play experience, including in the Ryder Cup.

Although he has struggled with his game recently, his odds of +1200 are generous and he has the talent to turn things around quickly.

McIlroy will also be motivated to perform well in the lead-up to The Masters, which begins just a few weeks after the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play.

He hasn’t won a major championship since 2014, so the pressure is on to get back into the winner’s circle. However, he’s all class and we expect him to make a deep run this week.

One More Chance for Fleetwood

Tommy Fleetwood could make a deep run in the tournament. Although he has yet to win on the PGA Tour, he is a quality match play player and could thrive in this format.

Fleetwood has been close to winning before, including a tie for the lead late in the fourth round at the Valspar Championship last week, and at +4000, he offers good value for bettors.

Bettors are getting a touch frustrated with the Brit. However, he’s worth including in WCG-Dell Technologies Match Play selections.

Young Eyes First Win

Cameron Young could surprise in the WCG-Dell Technologies Match Play. The American was last year’s Rookie of the Year and has consistently placed high in big events.

Although he has yet to win a tournament on the Tour, his odds of +800 for a top 4 finish are worth considering.

His finishes at the majors last year were enough to make him a weekly pick. The American hasn’t been at his best in 2023, but it’s only a matter of time before he wins.

A WGC title wouldn’t look out of place on his record.
