Without 2024 Chevrolet Detroit GP Odds, Here’s Who We Love
IndyCar Series Heads to Detroit following Thrilling Finish at Indy 500

The Great American Race is in the books. After a rain delay forced a late start to the 2024 Indy 500, Josef Newgarden’s pass on Pato O’Ward made for an incredible end to an amazing race.
Newgarden became the first driver to win consecutive Indy 500 races since Hélio Castroneves in 2001 and 2002. This week, the grid swaps the iconic oval track for a street circuit in downtown Detroit. Though there are no 2024 Chevrolet Detroit GP Odds available, here’s who would be considered favorites and sleepers this week.

2024 Chevrolet Detroit GP Odds: Favorites
Álex Palou
This weekend is the second time IndyCar drivers will race on the new layout through downtown Detroit. Last year, Palou was dominant with pole position, the race win, and led the most laps. It wasn’t very close even with safety car restarts and was the first of three consecutive wins.
With his fifth-place finish in the Indy 500, Palou now leads the IndyCar standings. His strong finishes at other street courses this year (fourth in St. Petersburg, third in Long Beach) give confidence he can get a win this week.
Colton Herta
Herta’s always a contender at street courses and he’s done much better in 2024. He finished in the top three in St. Petersburg (following Newgarden’s penalty) and Long Beach. That’s already more top-three finishes than he had in the entirety of 2023.

That lone podium in 2023 came at a road course – Toronto – that’s pretty similar to this week’s layout in Detroit. It may be one of his best opportunities on the IndyCar schedule to this point to grab a win.
Josef Newgarden
The back-to-back Indy 500 winner earned his first win of the season after his disqualification from St. Petersburg (still the biggest IndyCar news of 2024). That shot him up the standings to seventh and 61 points behind Palou in first. At this pace, he should be near the top in no time.
Newgarden’s rightfully earned a reputation as a master of ovals but his street course pace is solid this season. Even disregarding St. Petersburg, he finished fourth in Long Beach as the top Team Penske driver.
That’s no small feat in a team featuring Will Power. His most recent street course win came in 2022 at Long Beach. He managed 10th in Detroit last year and should have another good showing.
Pato O’Ward
Heartbreak is becoming the norm for O’Ward in Indy. A win just slipped out of his reach this year, a late crash knocked him out of contention in 2023, and he finished second in 2022 by just 1.8 seconds.
It’s been an up-and-down year for O’Ward so far. A win following Newgarden’s disqualification in St. Petersburg preceded three finishes outside the top 12: 16th in Long Beach, 23rd in Alabama, and 13th in the Sonsio Grand Prix.
Last year’s Detroit Grand Prix was rough; pit stop issues dropped him to the back and an ill-advised overtake attempt put him in the wall on lap 44 and ended his race. He may struggle again this week following his Indy disappointment.
Sleepers
Will Power
Power started on the front row in Indy but a crash in turn 1 ended his race on Lap 147 of 200. That result ended his streak of top-six finishes in championship events.
He still recouped some bonus points for making the “Fast Twelve” in qualifying and sits at third in the standings.
Last year, Power was Palou’s closest challenger and finished second after starting seventh. He’ll want to improve on that disappointment at the 500 and could easily do so this weekend with a win.
Scott Dixon
One of the most experienced drivers on the grid would be a great option this weekend. He won in Long Beach and finished seventh in St. Petersburg this season.
Last year he finished fourth in Detroit and Toronto and fifth in Nashville, all street courses. He should be in for a good result here after a third-place finish in the Indy 500.
2024 Chevrolet Detroit GP Odds: Predictions
Without IndyCar odds, it’s tough to fully predict who is a favorite and a sleeper this weekend but we hope these were close. Of the favorites, Palou looks like the man to beat this weekend. Of the sleepers, we like Power to take a surprise victory.
