2023-24 La Liga Odds Update: Top Contenders

Real Madrid Emerge as Clear Favorites

Outright, Top Four and Relegation Odds

Through nine matches, Real Madrid sits atop the La Liga table, with a 8-1 record. Surprises of the season Girona are two points behind Real and going for their first appearance in European competition. Defending champions Barcelona are in third but are La Liga’s last remaining unbeaten team. With nearly a quarter of the season done, we’ll take a look at the updated 2023-24 La Liga odds, including outrights and the top four and relegation battles.

The Usual Suspects

La Liga bettors expect Real Madrid and Barcelona to be at the top of the odds board year after year. There are no exceptions after nine La Liga games, with Real Madrid the favorites to win the league. Real, although missing Thibaut Courtois and Eder Militao due to ACL injuries, are 8-1 and on top of the table. Real opened up the season as +110 favorites to win a second title in the last three seasons. Now, bettors can only get Real at -165 odds to take home the title.

Jude Bellingham has proven to be a stellar signing so far after joining for €103 million from Borussia Dortmund. The 20-year-old midfielder has scored 8 goals and provided two assists in eight games. The English international leads the league in scoring so far. Real’s defense has also been stellar and conceded just six goals in nine games, fewer than any other team.

Barcelona are going for back-to-back titles and they’re only three points behind their bitter rivals. The addition of Joao Felix has added some dynamism to Barcelona’s attack. Ferran Torres has also stepped up off the bench. Of course, Barcelona has last season’s Golden Boot winner Robert Lewandowski, and teenage wonderkid Lamine Yamal.

Somewhat concerningly, Barcelona conceded twice to both Granada and Mallorca and only managed draws in those games. Barça are still unbeaten, at 6-3-0, and a look at the Barcelona standings shows they’re in third place. However, they currently display +160 odds to defend their title, down from +135 pre-season.

Sleeping Giant

Atletico Madrid certainly doesn’t get as much press as rivals Real Madrid or Barcelona. Still, they’ve been one of the most successful Spanish teams in recent years. They won the La Liga title in 2014 and 2021 under current manager Diego Simeone and have finished in the top three in each of the last 11 seasons. The 2023-24 La Liga odds price them at +900 to win the title and they’ve gotten off to a solid start. With a game in hand, they’re five points behind Real Madrid and have won their last four matches.

Atletico is also the only team to defeat Real Madrid this season, in any competition. Alvaro Morata and Antoine Griezmann have been standouts so far, with five and four goals, respectively. Simeone has solid depth at his disposal and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Atleti in the title race. This is also a good time to bet on them to win the league, as they opened with +800 outright odds. Bettors can also take Atletico to make the top four at -800.

Top Four Contenders

Girona have been the most surprising team of the season so far. They briefly led La Liga, for the first time in their history, and they’ve never before finished above 10th in the top flight. Right now, they’re 7-1-1 and sit in second place. The latest odds imply that they have a decent shot to make the top four but not to win the league. Those looking to bet on soccer can speculatively take Girona to win La Liga at +10000 odds. Girona to make the top four also shows +275 odds.

The only teams not previously mentioned that have shorter odds to make the top four than Girona are Basque duo Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad. The rivals both are priced at +15000 outright odds to win La Liga. Sociedad opened up at +4000 and Bilbao at +6600. Sociedad are conceding too much to be considered as genuine title contenders but Takefusa Kubo has emerged as one of the La Liga best players in the league.

Currently, Bilbao is seen as more likely to make the top four, at +225 odds. Meanwhile, Sociedad sits at +250 odds to make the top four for a second consecutive season. Only a handful of other teams are genuine top-four contenders.

Valencia has been way too inconsistent in recent years but is priced at +900 odds to make the top four. Real Betis have knocked on the door of the top four for a few seasons now and come in at +1000 odds to finally achieve it. Meanwhile, the oddsmakers price Sevilla at +1200 odds to shake off their slow start and qualify for the Champions League through La Liga.

However, they just fired their coach Jose Luis Mendilibar as they are already 11 points outside of the top four. Bettors can take Villarreal and Osasuna to make the top four at +1600.

Relegation Battle

Almeria is the only team in La Liga that hasn’t managed a win so far yet they are not the most likely team to go down to La Liga 2. That distinction belongs to Granada, who show -165 odds to be relegated in their first season back in the top flight. If Granada can sort their defense out, they’ll certainly have a chance to stay up as they’ve already scored 15 goals. Just before the international break they did manage a 2-2 draw vs. Barcelona.

Almeria, who finished just one point outside of the relegation zone last season, aren’t far behind Granada on the odds board. The 2023-24 La Liga odds list Almeria at -150 to go down. Las Palmas and Cadiz began the season as the two most likely teams to finish in the bottom three. They’re both outside of the relegation zone, for now, and show +200 and +185 relegation odds, respectively.

Last season’s relegation battle involved eight teams and 2023-24 could bring more of the same. Five other teams show +1000 odds or shorter to go down to La Liga 2. Alaves just earned a promotion but came in at +160 odds to go right back down. Mallorca, Celta Vigo, and Getafe display +300, +325, and +550 odds, respectively. Interestingly enough, Osasuna is seen as both top four and relegation contenders as the Pamplona club sits at +1000 relegation odds.
