2023-2024 French Ligue 1 Odds Update

PSG Heavy Favorites Despite Slow Start

Only Five Points Separate First and Seventh

Start to life under Luis Enrique for PSG hasn’t gotten off to the best start. The Parisians are in third place at present, with a 4-3-1 record. So far, Monaco are the league’s highest-scoring team and they’re also on top of the table. Six teams are within five points of Monaco as there appear to be a bunch of European contenders this season. Although PSG are still heavy favorites to win the league, let’s take a look at the 2023-24 French Ligue 1 odds and see the probability that another team could usurp them.

PSG’s Odds Shorter Despite Slow Start

Paris Saint-Germain have won the last two Ligue 1 titles and they entered the season at -350 odds to win a third straight. Early signs have not exactly been promising as they’ve only won half of their matches so far. Rennes was the last team on PSG’s schedule just before the international break and PSG managed a 3-1 road win, which could build some momentum.

There were a lot of moving parts in the offseason as Lionel Messi, Neymar, Marco Verratti and coach Christophe Galtier all departed the club. PSG brought in former Spain coach Luis Enrique as their new coach and a bunch of players in the offseason. It appears that new arrivals Manuel Ugarte, Milan Skriniar, Randal Kolo Muani, Ousmane Dembele and Lucas Hernandez are all carving out key roles.

The fact that PSG are now -500 favorites to win Ligue 1 says more about the talent they have than their performances so far. Oddsmakers clearly expect PSG to get it together sooner rather than later. Kylian Mbappe is having another excellent individual season, though, and is first in the Ligue 1 stats with seven goals.

Other Contenders

Only four other teams show shorter than +5000 outright 2023-24 French Ligue 1 odds. The biggest challengers to PSG’s throne appear to be current league leaders Monaco. Monaco are averaging well over two goals per game and stand at 5-2-1 heading into the October international break.

They last won the Ligue 1 title, with Mbappe, in 2016-17. Now, the Monegasques show +1000 odds to win their ninth championship. Wissam Ben Yedder has already scored five times for Monaco and Folarin Balogun has shaken off his double penalty miss vs Nice and scored in each of the last two games. Monaco also come in at -250 odds to make the top four this season after finishing in a disappointing sixth in 2022-23.

It’s been a strange start to the season for Marseille. Their coach, Marcelino, resigned after seven games and Gennaro Gattuso took over. He got his first win as Marseille coach last Sunday as OM defeated Le Havre 3-0. Marseille are currently in sixth place and sit at +1400 odds to win Ligue 1 for the first time since 2010. They’re much more likely to occupy a place in the top four at the end of the season, at -165.

Dark Horses

Ligue 1’s only remaining unbeaten team is Francesco Farioli’s Nice. Nice have compiled a 4-4-0 record and conceded just four goals so far. Goalkeeper Marcin Bulka has already kept five clean sheets and he saved two penalties vs Monaco a few weeks back. Nice are hitting their stride, with four wins from their last five games, including one over PSG.

Nice haven’t won a league title since 1959, though, and are +1800 dark horses this season. They are very much in the running for a Champions League berth, though, especially with 2024-25’s expanded format. They’re priced at -110 odds to finish in the top four.

Lille are the only team other than PSG to win a league title in the last six years. Les Dogues pulled off the feat in 2020-21 but have been quite inconsistent ever since. They’ve started off the season middlingly, with a 3-3-2 record and are priced at +3300 odds to win Ligue 1.

Lille’s Jonathan David has been a golden boot contender over the last couple of seasons but has only scored twice so far. Lille’s UEFA Europa Conference League schedule could also get in the way of a title push. They do display +110 2023-24 French Ligue 1 odds to make the top four, though.

Top Four Contenders

Rennes have finished in fourth place in each of the last two seasons. They’re certainly not an easy team to beat but have drawn five of their eight Ligue 1 games so far. SRFC are the only other team priced at shorter than +10000 odds to win the title, as they stand at +8000.

Another top four finish is a lot more realistic, and the soccer lines price that at +250. It’s certainly not the worst bet on the odds board.

Next up are Lens, who took PSG down to the wire last season and finished in second place. While they are currently on top of their Champions League group after an impressive win vs Arsenal, their start in Ligue 1 has been abysmal. They’ve won just two of their eight Ligue 1 matches so far and are currently much closer to the relegation zone than the top four. Lens to make the top four sits at +400 odds but they’ve certainly got a lot of work to do to make that a reality.

Reims were the darlings of Ligue 1 last season, when they went on a 19-game unbeaten run but only finished in 11th place. Coach Will Still has made them a highly competitive Ligue 1 team and they’re currently in fifth place. Teddy Teuma has looked a good signing so far, as he’s found the net four times already. Bettors can take Reims at +800 odds to make the top four.

Strasbourg and Toulouse both currently come in at +1000 odds to make the top four but they’re certainly on the outside looking in. Brest occupy third place at present but their form is expected to tail off as the season goes on. They’re +4000 underdogs to seal a top four place.
