Lille Grab Important Win

Lille further boosted their Champions League hopes by defeating Lens 2-1 last Friday. Edon Zhegrova scored a brace for Les Dogues and the Kosovar international has had a fine season. Lille went up 2-0 in the 60th minute and Lens got a goal back in the 78th but the hosts managed a well deserved victory. Striker Jonathan David didn’t manage to get on the scoresheet but he’s been superb as of late.

David is second on the list of Ligue 1 top scorers, with 15 goals. He’s also managed to find the net 11 times in his last eight starts, in all competitions. Lille has some big matches in the coming weeks and will take on Aston Villa in the first leg of the UEFA Europa Conference League Quarter-Final next Thursday.

Bettors should note that Lille are 9-3-1 at home in Ligue 1 this season and are unbeaten in their last six games overall. Plus, they haven’t lost any of their last 14 home matches. Les Dogues are also on an 11 game scoring streak heading into this match, in all competitions. Angel Gomes and Samuel Umtiti should be the only Lille players, at least among those who have played five or more games, out on Friday.

Marseille on Three Game Losing Streak

Marseille failed to take advantage of being a man up and fell 2-0 to PSG in Le Classique on Sunday. PSG’s Lucas Beraldo received a controversial straight red card in the 40th minute, which meant Jean-Louis Gasset’s OM had 50 minutes to play with a man advantage. To be fair, Marseille did have their chances and PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was up to the task. He saved 10 shots and Vitinha and Goncalo Ramos scored for PSG in the Marseille loss.

As a result, Marseille remained in seventh place in the Ligue 1 standings. OM are currently seven points behind fourth-placed Lille with just seven games to play. While Sunday marked Marseille’s first home loss of the campaign, they’ve been dreadful on the road in Ligue 1. OM entered the weekend with just a 2-4-7 record away from the Velodrome. Outside of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Marseille hasn’t been scoring much.

The Gabonese international has found the net 11 times in Ligue 1 this season and no other Marseille player has more than three goals. OM have also lost their last three matches, in all competitions, heading into Friday’s match. They are lacking some confidence in front of goal right now and an injury to Ismaila Sarr doesn’t figure to help. He, along with Jonathan Clauss, Bamo Meite, Amir Murillo, and Valentin Rongier could all miss the match at Lille.

Match Analysis & Odds

After winning their first five matches under Gasset, Marseille has run into a few roadblocks. They’ve failed to score in each of their last two matches but Marseille’s over 0.5 goals comes in at -250 odds for this one. The Lille vs Marseille betting odds price Lille as +115 favorites and getting wins over OM at the Pierre-Mauroy has been no problem for Les Dogues in recent seasons.

Marseille are +230 underdogs and if they’re able to grab all three points it’d be just their third road win in 15 Ligue 1 tries in 2023-24. This is as must-win as it gets for Marseille as their Champions League hopes will almost entirely evaporate with a draw or loss. Bettors also have the option of backing a draw at +240 odds.

Meanwhile, Lille pk, -0.5 sits at -120, while Marseille pk, +0.5 is priced at -110. Both Ligue 1 teams have scored in each of Lille’s last four games but Paulo Fonseca will be challenging his team to keep a clean sheet here. In any case, under 2.5 goals show -120 odds for this crucial Ligue 1 match.
