Champions League Race Alive and Well in Ligue 1
With just six games remaining in the Ligue 1 season, the margins between top-half teams are getting slimmer and slimmer. We examine these two Champions League contenders, in this Strasbourg vs Rennes game preview.
Just three points currently separate third-place Rennes from sixth-place Monaco while others aren’t too far behind. While PSG has virtually sealed the title, French Ligue 1 betting odds are still worth monitoring over the next few weeks as teams are still duking it out for league position. Achieving top three is incredibly significant in Ligue 1 because it confers qualification to next year’s UEFA Champions League.

Unders Hitting in Strasbourg Matches
Ligue 1 Position: Fifth, 53 pts
Last Five: 1-1 D at Troyes, 1-1 D vs. Lyon, 1-0 W vs. Lens, 0-0 D at Lorient, 1-0 W vs. Monaco
It’s not too difficult to spot a trend in Strasbourg’s recent matches. They’ve been excellent on defense but haven’t necessarily capitalized offensively. Their last seven matches have gone under 2½ goals, but they’ll face an adept Rennes attack on Wednesday.
No Strasbourg vs Rennes game preview would be complete without mentioning one of Ligue 1’s biggest surprises this season: Strasbourg’s attempt to secure Champions League qualification for the first time. Undefeated in their last 10 matches, Strasbourg were minutes away from a road win over Troyes in their last time out, but the Alsace club conceded a late penalty in a 1-1 draw.
Terrier Leads Dangerous Rennes Frontline
Ligue 1 Position: Third, 56 pts
Last Five: 3-2 L vs. Monaco, 3-2 W at Reims, 1-1 D vs. Nice, 6-1 W vs. Metz, 4-2 W at Lyon
Injuries and suspensions: D Nayef Aguerd (illness), F Jeremy Doku (calf), GK Alfred Gomis (finger), D Loic Bade (groin), F Kamaldeen Sulemana (back)
Looking at the other side of the Strasbourg vs Rennes game preview shows Rennes with the exact opposite problem. They’re able to put the ball in the back of the net with ease, but can’t seem to keep their opponents out at the other end as of late. Only star-studded Paris Saint-Germain have scored more goals than Rennes this season and forward Martin Terrier is firmly in the Golden Boot race.
Terrier has 19 goals, which is only one behind league leader Kylian Mbappe. He scored a late penalty in SRFC’s last match vs. Monaco, but it was too little, too late as the Monegasques picked up a 3-2 road win. The loss ended a seven-game unbeaten run for Rennes, but they’ve still averaged over three goals per game over their last eight.
What to Watch …
When viewing the Strasbourg vs Rennes odds, note that Rennes may be missing multiple players due to injury. Nayef Aguerd is second on the team in minutes and scored in the reverse fixture, but missed SRFC’s last match due to injury. GK Alfred Gomis has missed the last four matches and Rennes have conceded 1½ goals per game in his absence.
As good as Rennes are on offense, Strasbourg have kept four clean sheets in their last seven matches. They could go and and take all three points if they’re able to control the pace of the game and shut down Terrier and Gaetan Laborde. However, that’s a big if.
