2024 MLB Season: Post-Trade Deadline World Series Odds Update

Dodgers Still Lead The Way

The 2024 MLB trade deadline came and went on Tuesday, and while there were a ton of moves made, this was more of a volume deadline than a flashy deadline.

Besides, maybe the Dodgers trading for starter Jack Flaherty from the Tigers, none of the individual moves did much to swing the MLB post-tradeMLB post trade deadline odds very much. However, some teams, like the Padres and Orioles, may have multiple moves that could help them during the playoff push.

Most of the biggest names on the market, from Tarik Skubal and Luis Robert Jr. to Garrett Crochet and Blake Snell, actually stayed put.

Flaherty and reliever Tanner Scott (to the Padres) commanded the biggest returns but those deals certainly wouldn’t be considered blockbusters by any stretch of the imagination.

It’s possible that the competitive Wild Card races in both the National and American Leagues made this a seller’s market, and, for some big names, the prices were too high in all likelihood. The 2024 MLB odds look rather similar now than before.

Even without much change in how the top World Series contenders look, it’s worthwhile to break down each of the teams with the best odds to win it all and see how they addressed their needs at the deadline:

Dodgers logo Los Angeles Dodgers (+300)

The Dodgers’ big move was getting Flaherty for a relatively light package involving just one of Los Angeles’ big prospects.

They also picked up veteran outfielder Kevin Kiermaier, a defensive ace), infielder Amed Rosario (who they also traded for last summer), injured infielder Tommy Edman and reliever Michael Kopech. So, not exactly a ground-shaking deadline for the Dodgers but, then again, based on the MLB post trade deadline odds, they didn’t need to do much.

They’re still the odds-on favorite to win it all, and it just might come down to health. Mookie Betts has been out since mid-June with a broken hand and Max Muncy has been out since mid-May with a strained oblique.

Edman hasn’t played all season due to wrist surgery, and starters Dustin May, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Walker Buehler are all out but should be returning at some point.

This is a very talented team that has been able to tread water without so many stars, so there wasn’t much of a desire to make a huge move. The Flaherty pickup should stabilize the rotation a bit.

Phillies logo Philadelphia Phillies (+500)

Philadelphia still has the best record in the National League yet the 2024 MLB scores haven’t been going so well for the Phillies lately. Their lead in the NL East over the Braves is down to 7.5 games (eight games over the Mets) as the lineup has cooled down significantly.

So, it was a bit surprising that they had a relatively quiet deadline, only adding outfielder Austin Hays and relievers Carlos Estévez and Tanner Banks while trading fellow relievers Seranthony Domínguez and Gregory Soto.

On the whole, they didn’t really change much. Estévez is a strong late-inning relief option, while Banks is a middle reliever, and Hays is a righty platoon outfielder. When you’re 65-42, it’s smart not to rock the boat too much. However, the Phillies certainly could have done more, so their odds didn’t swing a lot.

Yankees logo New York Yankees (+600)

It felt as if the Yankees were going to be more or less content with their group ahead of the deadline, but after picking up Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Marlins — who has back-to-back two-homer games with his new team — and winning three games in a row, New York’s MLB post trade deadline odds are looking pretty good.

The Yankees didn’t give up a ton to get Chisholm Jr. and he has immediately injected life into an extremely top-heavy lineup.

They also picked up relievers Mark Leiter Jr. and Enyel De Los Santos to sure up a bullpen that has, on the whole, been pretty good but has also been ravaged by injuries. They did not add a high-leverage arm, like an Estévez or Scott, despite the recent struggles of closer Clay Holmes. Offensively, this is a better team now, yet the rotation and bullpen needed more help.

Orioles logo Baltimore Orioles (+700)

The Orioles, currently a half-game up on the Yankees in the AL East, were active over the past week, adding the aforementioned Domínguez and Soto as well as starters Zach Eflin and Trevor Rogers and talented but injury-prone outfielder Eloy Jiménez.

Baltimore paid a hefty prospect price for Eflin and Rogers and, in doing so, picked up two solid starters to fill some gaps in the rotation left by a few long-term injuries. Baltimore, like New York, has not played well over the past month of the MLB schedule, and the Orioles figured they needed some reinforcements to stave off the Yankees.

Baltimore’s offense should be fine as the concern has really been with the pitching staff and that’s an area Mike Elias certainly addressed at the deadline.

Astros logo Houston Astros (+1100) and Braves logo Atlanta Braves (+1200)

Mired in a close race with the Seattle Mariners in the AL West, the scuffling Astros made a big splash in trading a few highly touted young guys to the Toronto Blue Jays for starter Yusei Kikuchi.

Houston still has a horde of quality starters on the injured list so the Astros desperately needed a starter even if the price for Kikuchi was a bit higher than expected. Otherwise, they traded for reliever Caleb Ferguson from the Yankees and didn’t do anything else.

So, their odds to win it all are still relatively slim. They may not even make the playoffs, as they’re only three games over .500.

The Braves, currently holding onto the top NL Wild Card spot by a thread, only made one trade of note: Re-acquiring outfielder Jorge Soler and reliever Luke Jackson from the Giants for reliever Tyler Matzek and a prospect.

Soler and Jackson were members of Atlanta’s 2021 World Series team, and the Braves hope their return can light a spark in a team that has been a major disappointment thus far. Soler will bring some much-needed power to a Braves lineup missing a few regulars.
