Astros vs Yankees Game Odds: Yankees Look to Avoid First Postseason Sweep Since 2012

Houston Astros A Win Away From Fourth World Series Appearance in Six Years

Astros vs Yankees Game Odds Preview: The New York Yankees came into the American League Championship Series as the underdogs against the Houston Astros. However, a four-game sweep was not on the minds of fans from either team heading into the American League Championship Series.

Outfielder Chas McCormick took advantage of the short porch in right field at Yankee Stadium to hit a two-run home run to lead the Astros to the 5-0 win that gave Houston a commanding 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven game series.

Lance McCullers Jr., who got the ball when the Astros completed a sweep of Seattle, will look to pitch the Astros into the World Series for the fourth time in the last six seasons. The Yankees will counter with Nestor Cortes. It was Cortes, who was the winning pitcher in the final game of the division series with Cleveland. Cortes’ emergence is a major reason why when looking at the NY Yankees standings, they finished atop the AL East.

According to the MLB odds, the Astros are priced at -160 to win the World Series with the Yankees coming in at +3000.

Bullpen Shutting Down the Yankees

Coming into the series, one of the biggest advantages for the Houston Astros was expected to be the bullpen. In the three-game sweep of the Seattle Mariners, Houston relievers allowed one earned run in 20â…“ innings of work. It has been more of the same in the AL Championship Series. It is one of the reasons why the Astros vs Yankees odds favored the Astros coming into the series.

Houston’s bullpen has surrendered four hits and one run in 8⅔ innings. They have struck out 16 batters and walked five leaving the Yankees in the position of needing to strike early on and that is something that has not been happening frequently enough.

The Yankees have scored just one run after the fifth inning in the series with the Astros scoring six times from the sixth inning on in the first three games in the series.

Bryan Abreu, Hunter Brown, Luis Garcia, Hector Neris, Ryan Pressley and Ryne Stanek have yet to allow a run in the postseason.

All Or Nothing Approach Not Working for Yankees

When the Yankees began to struggle late in the season, it was the inability to string together rallies that proved to be one of the major issues.

The Yankees hit 157 home runs in the first 92 games of the season and at that pace, New York would have finished the regular season with 276 home runs. However, since play resumed following the MLB All-Star break, the pace slowed considerably with 97 homers in 70 games.

Those issues have continued in the postseason. Despite that, the Astros vs Yankees Game Odds favor New York to extend the series by winning Game 4.

Harrison Bader and Anthony Rizzo are the only Yankees with home runs in this series. The Yankees had just one hit after eight innings in Saturday’s game. Aaron Judge, the 2022 MLB leader with 62 home runs during the season, has yet to go deep in this series.

Astros vs Yankees Prediction

Concluding Our Astros vs Yankees Game Odds Preview: The Yankees are just 1 for 14 with runners in scoring position in the series and that is going to need to change for New York to send the series back to Houston.

The Yankees have struck out 41 times in 94 at-bats and that is not going to get it done. McCullers had seven strikeouts in six innings in his only other postseason appearance in 2022.

The Yankees will need to treat this game like a Game 7 when it comes to the use of the bullpen while the Astros can play things a little differently with a 3-0 lead in the series.

The Yankees are just 39-45 against the spread at home while the Astros are 45-37 against the MLB betting lines on the road. The total has gone under in each game in the series and it is set at 6.5 in this game.
