Bet On Tigers To Take Series Opener vs Visiting Pirates

Pirates vs Tigers MLB Odds Favor Host Team on Tuesday

The Detroit Tigers try to win their fourth straight game and climb up to .500 on the season when they host the Pittsburgh Pirates in the opener of a two-game series on Tuesday.

The World Series odds aren’t high for either of these teams, but they are both hoping to build this season and stay in playoff contention until the end.

Detroit is coming off a weekend series in which it took three of four from the Toronto Blue Jays, including a 14-11 contest on Sunday. The Tigers (26-27) are fourth in the AL Central, sitting behind the third-place Minnesota Twins.

Pittsburgh (25-29) took two of three from the Atlanta Braves over the weekend, though it dropped the series finale on Sunday, 8-1.

The Pirates are in fourth place in the NL Central and trail the red-hot St. Louis Cardinals, who are in third place.

The early Pirates vs Tigers MLB odds favor the home team, with Detroit listed at -147 on the moneyline. Pittsburgh is +135 to pick up the straight-up victory in the series opener.

If you’re betting on the over/under, it is set at seven runs, with the over getting -120 odds and the under +100.

The first pitch of this contest is scheduled for 6:50 p.m. ET on Tuesday at Comerica Park in Detroit.

Pirates Looking for Consistency

Pittsburgh has been up and down over the last 15 games, failing to win more than two games in a row but also not losing more than two straight.

The Pirates haven’t had a winning streak of more than two games since the first weekend of May, and the team’s best stretch was a 5-0 start to the MLB season.

Right-hander Jared Jones will make the 11th start of his rookie campaign, bringing a 3-4 record and 3.05 ERA to the mound. The 22-year-old has 68 strikeouts in 59 innings, ranking 17th in the majors heading into Monday’s action.

Jones has struggled a bit over his last two starts, allowing three earned runs in each. His last start was last Wednesday against the San Francisco Giants, as he went six innings and allowed three runs on six hits, including a home run, while striking out five and walking a career-high three. He took a no-decision in an extra-inning Pirates loss.

The Pirates are hoping for a better offensive performance than they had on Sunday, when they managed just one run on five hits. Pittsburgh is 24th in the MLB team stats for batting average, hitting .228 heading into this game. The Pirates were tied for 21st in baseball with 214 runs entering this week’s action.

Outfielder Bryan Reynolds is batting just .263 on the season, but he enters this series on a five-game hitting streak, having recorded at least one hit in 10 of his last 11 contests.

Reynolds leads the Pirates with 28 RBI, is tied for the team lead with seven home runs and has also recorded 12 doubles, a triple and 20 runs scored.

Skubal Looking for Tigers Bounceback

The Tigers’ best pitcher this season, left-hander Tarik Skubal, will get the start on Tuesday, coming off his first loss of the campaign. The 27-year-old is 6-1 with a 2.25 ERA (12th in baseball), recording 72 strikeouts in 60 innings of work.

But Skubal had his troubles against the Kansas City Royals in his last start last Wednesday, tying his season high with four earned runs allowed over five innings. Skubal gave up six hits, including a home run, while striking out six and walking two.

Detroit is coming off a win in one of the highest MLB scores of the season, getting a walkoff three-run home run from Matt Vierling to pull out a 14-11 victory. Vierling homered twice in the game, finishing with four hits and tying his career high with four RBI.

The Tigers don’t have a single MLB player hitting .300 or better, though the team’s batting average of .236 ranked 17th in the majors entering the week.

Outfielder Riley Greene has been the big power hitter for Detroit this season, leading the team with nine home runs. Unfortunately, he’s batting just .230 with nine doubles, a triple. 20 RBI and 33 runs scored.

He’s struck out 59 times to rank among the top 20 in baseball in that category.

Tigers Take High-Scoring Affair

This is the second two-game series these two teams have played this season, with the Tigers and Pirates splitting two contests in Pittsburgh back in April.

Both of those MLB games had eight or more total runs scored, and we like this game to be much of the same.

Although Skubal has been solid this season, he struggled in his last outing and could have some trouble with the Pirates in this one.

Despite that, we like Detroit to pick up the win in the series opener, extending its win streak to four games. When making your MLB bets, go with the host Tigers and the over.
