Blue Jays vs Marlins Series Preview: Can Jays Stop Marlins’ Roll?

Blue Jays Head to Miami, Looking for .500

Miami Marlins, One of the Hottest Teams in MLB Heading Into Series

Two of the 10 Major League Baseball teams with at least 10 wins in June will be getting together for three games with the Blue Jays vs Marlins series preview favoring the host Marlins for the opener. However, Toronto is priced at -160 to win the series.

Miami, which is 12-4 in June, holds down the top wild-card spot in the National League while Toronto is 1/2 a game out of the final playoff spot in the American League. There is plenty for both of them to play for as the 2023 MLB season moves forward.

Toronto is 20-21 on the road. Meanwhile, Miami trails only Atlanta and Arizona among National League squads with 21 wins at home.

Toronto’s Jose Berrios is 2-0 with a 1.37 ERA in three starts in June as he looks to get the Blue Jays going in the series opener. When looking at the MLB results, Toronto is 7-1 in the last eight games started by Berrios. The Marlins are expected to turn to 20-year-old Eury Perez and last year’s Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara in the final two games of the series.

Toronto (+1800) is tied for seventh in the odds to win the World Series. Miami (+6500) is tied for 15th in the championship odds

Jansen Catching on For Blue Jays

When the topic turns to the top power-hitting catchers in the majors, Toronto’s Danny Jansen tends to get overlooked. However, no catcher in the American League has more home runs in the month of June than the three hit by Jansen.

Jansen is batting .357 with three home runs, three runs and four RBIs in his last four games. His next home run will give Jansen his third straight season with at least 10 HRs. Still, Toronto is the underdog when it comes to the Blue Jays vs Marlins series preview.

The last time Jansen faced the Marlins was in 2020 when he went 3-for-9 with a home run in three games.

Young Pitchers Delivering for Marlins

The veterans have been struggling a bit for the Marlins with Sandy Alcantara and Jesus Luzardo giving up a combined total of 25 runs in seven starts in June.

However, Andrew Nardi hasn’t allowed a run in seven innings in June while starting pitchers Eury Perez and Braxton Garrett are 4-0 with six runs allowed and 40 strikeouts in 32.1 innings of work as the Marlins have played themselves into playoff contention. The work of the pitching staff is one of the reasons why the Blue Jays vs Marlins series preview favors Miami.

Who’s Hot

  • Bo Bichette, Toronto Blue Jays SS: Bichette is 7-of-24 over his last six games. He has a double in each of the last five contests.
  • Thomas Hatch, Toronto Blue Jays: Hatch hasn’t allowed a run in 3.2 innings in his four appearances this season.
  • Andrew Nardi, Miami Marlins P: Nardi hasn’t allowed a run in his last 13 appearances. He has allowed six hits with 17 strikeouts over 12.1 innings during that stretch.
  • Jorge Soler, Miami Marlins DH: Soler is 11-for-24 with seven runs, three home runs and six RBIs over his last eight games.

Who’s Not

  • JT Chargois, Miami Marlins P: Chargois has given up six hits and five runs in 3.2 innings over his last four appearances.
  • Adam Cimber, Toronto Blue Jays P: Cimber has allowed 10 hits and 11 runs in 4.2 innings over his last five games.
  • Bryan De La Cruz, Miami Marlins OF: De La Cruz is 1-for-26 with nine strikeouts over his last six games.
  • Sergio Espinal, Toronto Blue Jays IF: Espinal is hitting .217 with one extra-base hit over his last 10 games.

Blue Jays vs Marlins Injury Update

Catcher Alejandro Kirk is questionable for Monday’s series opener for the Blue Jays due to a hand injury. Relief pitcher Zach Pop could return later this month.

For Miami, outfielder Jazz Chisholm as well as pitchers Johnny Cueto, Tommy Nance and Trevor Rogers could be back by late June.

Blue Jays vs Marlins Betting Preview

With Perez, one of the hottest pitchers in the majors set to throw for the Marlins, and Toronto going with Berrios and Gausman, who leads the American League with 121 strikeouts, runs might be hard to come by in this series.

Miami is eighth in the majors with a 3.63 ERA in the month of June with the Blue Jays’ 165 strikeouts in the month the most in MLB.

Just one of Miami’s last six games have been decided by one run. However, Miami’s 18-5 record in one-run games is the best in baseball. Toronto is 12-6 in one-run affairs.

The Mariners are 16-5 against American League teams and Toronto 12-5 versus the National League.
