Brewers vs Braves Preview: Two of NL’s Top Teams Square Off

Atlanta in Battle For Wild Card Berth

The Milwaukee Brewers visit the Atlanta Braves for a three-game series starting Tuesday. The Brewers (62-49) are leading the NL Central, while Atlanta (60-51) is in a dogfight for one of the three wild card berths after a disappointing 12-13 record in July.

The Brewers vs Braves preview shows Colin Rea and Bryce Elder as the scheduled starters in Tuesday’s opener. The Braves are -140, and the total on the game is 9-under (-120).

Milwaukee’s offense has been pretty solid during the season. Milwaukee is No. 7 with a .254 team batting average and No. 22 in home runs.

The Brewers are third in MLB in on-base percentage and stolen bases, so the team is capable of manufacturing some runs. Milwaukee is averaging 4.7 runs per game for the year and 4.6 runs on the road.

The pitching staff has been good, with Milwaukee ranking No. 8 in team ERA and No. 3 in bullpen ERA. Milwaukee relievers have converted 35 saves in 49 attempts, so they’re not letting many opportunities get away.

Atlanta’s offense has been a little below average this season. The Braves are averaging 4.2 runs per game and 4.1 runs at home. Atlanta is No. 20 in team batting average and tied for No. 7 in home runs. The Braves are No. 23 in on-base percentage, so they have to do a better job getting runners on base.

The pitching staff has been the strength of the team. Atlanta has a team ERA of 3.48, which is tied for the best mark in the league. The bullpen is No. 2 in bullpen ERA, and the Braves have 28 saves in 40 attempts. You can’t fault the pitchers for Atlanta’s struggled during the summer.

Tuesday’s Game

Rea has been one of the stars for the Brewers staff this season, going 9-4 with a 3.56. Milwaukee is 13-5 when he starts and 5-3 when he takes the mound on the road. The Brewers have scored more runs for him at home, which is the big reason for the better record in home games.

The Brewers vs Braves preview shows Elder taking the place of Chris Sale in this game. After initially being penciled in as the starter, Sale was pushed back one day. Elder hasn’t shown the same consistency he did last year and spent some time on the injured list. He was solid is his return last start, allowing just one run. He’s 2-4 with a 5.67 ERA, and the Braves are 4-5 when he starts.

The MLB betting lines are a little bit on the high side in this game and the value is on the Brewers.

Wednesday’s Game

Freddy Peralta and Sale are the scheduled starters for this one. Peralta is having a pretty decent year for Milwaukee, going 6-6 with a 3.89 ERA. The Brewers are 13-9 when he starts, which is the main thing. Peralta was on the losing end of a 6-2 decision to Sale and the Braves in his last start.

Sale is having another impressive season, going 13-3 with a 2.71 ERA. He has 155 strikeouts in just 123 innings, so he’ll be used in some MLB player props in the game for strikeouts. Atlanta is 14-6 when Sale starts and 8-1 when he starts at home. The Braves have allowed three or fewer runs in eight of his nine home starts, winning all eight of those games. The one loss was an 11-9 loss to Oakland.

Sale will likely be a big favorite here and it’s hard to argue that he shouldn’t be. He’s pitched well at home and the Braves are winning. He’ll be a popular release in the MLB free picks. Atlanta is also 8-1 on the run line when Sale pitches at home, and that’s probably the way to go in this one in order to get some decent odds.

Thursday’s Game

The Brewers vs Braves preview shows Frankie Montas is scheduled to start against Charlie Morton in the series finale. Montas isn’t having the best of seasons, going 5-8 with a 5.03 ERA. The Brewers won his first start since he was picked up from Cincinnati and he’ll make his second start here. He wasn’t all that impressive, but did enough to help Milwaukee win the game.

Morton hasn’t quite been himself this season, going 6-6 with a 3.94 ERA. Atlanta is just 9-11 when Morton starts this season, but 6-5 when he starts at home. The Braves are 3-8 in totals when Morton starts at home and 8-11-1 overall.

The numbers of Montas will probably ensure that the total is a little bit on the high side in this one. With Morton showing a decent under trend at home, that could be the way to go in this one.
