Brewers vs Cubs MLB Betting Should Be On Milwaukee

NL Central Rivals Wrap Up Season Series at Wrigley

  • Brewers' Winning Streak: Brewers on a post-All-Star winning streak.
  • Cubs' Recent Struggles: Cubs struggling, recently broke two-game losing streak.
  • Pitching Matchup and Odds: Myers vs Assad, Brewers -116, Cubs -102.

The Milwaukee Brewers look to keep their winning ways going when they face the host Chicago Cubs in a three-game series between division rivals beginning on Monday. Milwaukee has been unbeaten since the All-Star break, while Chicago dropped its first series in the second half of the season. However, Brewers vs Cubs MLB betting is always a tricky proposition.

Milwaukee (57-42) has won three in a row overall, including a sweep of a two-game weekend series against the Minnesota Twins. The Brewers are atop the NL Central standings, leading the second-place St. Louis Cardinals by five games entering the week.

Chicago picked up its lone win of the weekend against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday, snapping a two-game losing skid. The Cubs (48-53) are in fourth in the division, trailing the third-place Pittsburgh Pirates by three games and leading the last-place Cincinnati Reds by a half-game.

The MLB odds for Monday’s series opener give the Brewers a slight edge, as they’re listed at -116 on the moneyline compared to the Cubs at -102. If you’re betting on the run line, you can get Chicago at -162 when getting 1.5 runs, while Milwaukee is +134 when giving those runs.

The over/under for the opening contest is set at 8.5 runs, with -122 odds for the under and +100 for the over.

The first two games of the series are set for 8:05 p.m. ET first pitches, with the series finale set for 2:20 p.m. ET on Wednesday. All games of the series will be played at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Check out BetMGM for the latest odds and betting options.

Pitching Matchups

Game 1: Tobias Myers (Milwaukee) vs Javier Assad (Chicago)

Right-hander Tobias Myers will start the three-game series for the Brewers, as he’s coming off a masterpiece in his last outing. The 25-year-old is 6-3 with a 3.13 ERA in his rookie MLB campaign, striking out 62 in 72 innings over 14 appearances and 13 starts. He last pitched on July 10, throwing eight shutout innings against the Pirates, allowing four hits while striking out six and walking one.

Chicago will counter with righty Javier Assad, who brings a 4-3 record and 3.27 ERA to the mound for his 18th start of the campaign. Assad has struggled in his last two outings, failing to get out of the fifth inning and allowing at least three runs and two home runs in each. His last appearance was against the Cardinals on July 13, lasting just 2.1 innings and giving up three runs on seven hits while striking out none and walking two.

Game 2: Colin Rea (Milwaukee) vs Jameson Taillon (Chicago)

Milwaukee will have veteran righty Colin Rea getting the start for the middle game of the series. Rea is 9-3 with a 3.77 ERA in 19 appearances and 16 starts, striking out 76 in 105 innings of work. He last pitched on July 14, going 5.2 innings against the Washington Nationals and allowing two runs on five hits while striking out seven and walking one, which came one start after he gave up seven runs in five innings to the Pirates.

This game could have one of the lower MLB scores for today if the Cubs can get a good outing from right-hander Jameson Taillon. The 32-year-old is 7-4 with a 3.10 ERA this season and is 3-0 with a 3.38 ERA in three starts in July. This will be his fourth time facing the Brewers in 2024, as he’s 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA in the first three meetings, though he’s allowed three runs in each of the past two matchups.

Game 3: Undecided (Milwaukee) vs Justin Steele (Chicago)

The Brewers’ rotation is in flux right now after the team recently designated veteran left-hander Dallas Keuchel for assignment. Keuchel had made four starts for the Brewers, failing to record a decision and notching a 5.40 ERA over 16.2 innings. Milwaukee still isn’t certain who will take the spot in the starting rotation, so this game may end up being a bullpen game.

The Cubs will turn to left-hander Justin Steele to make the start in Wednesday’s contest. Steele is 2-4 with a 3.07 ERA in 15 starts in 2024, striking out 87 in 91 innings. He struggled in Friday’s loss to the Diamondbacks, lasting 4.2 innings and allowing five runs on nine hits while striking out six and walking two. This will be his third start against the Brewers this season, as he’s pitched a combined 13 innings and given up three runs against Milwaukee.

Brewers Showing Some Punch At Plate

Milwaukee has been hitting the ball well of late, averaging 8.3 runs over the last three games. That kind of output would improve the team’s MLB World Series odds, as the Brewers were sixth in baseball in runs (474) and fifth in batting average (.255) heading into Sunday’s action. Chicago, on the other hand, has been struggling to score since the MLB All-Star break, putting up a total of four runs, half of which came in Sunday’s 10-inning victory.

First baseman Rhys Hoskins had the big blow in Sunday’s win, a two-run homer that tied him for the team lead with 15. Also hitting 15 this season is shortstop Willy Adames, who paces the team with 67 RBI. Catcher William Contreras has also been an important hitter for the Brewers, batting .284 with 23 doubles, a triple, 11 home runs, 56 RBI and 65 runs scored.

The Cubs got a late lift from second baseman Nico Hoerner on Sunday, as he doubled and scored the tying run in the ninth, then drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th to force in the winning run. Hoerner has reached base in 14 straight games and has been very good against the Brewers this season. In 42 at-bats against Milwaukee, Hoerner is batting .262 with three doubles, two home runs, four RBI, and five runs scored.

Milwaukee Finishes Season Series With Win

This will be the last series between these two division rivals in 2024, but the Brewers vs Cubs MLB betting seems like an obvious choice. Milwaukee already leads 6-4 in the season series, and we like the Brewers to take two out of three in this three-game set as well.

There just isn’t enough offense in the Cubs’ bats to keep up with the Brewers, especially with the way Milwaukee has been hitting the ball. Things could get ugly in a hurry in these contests, as the Brewers are the obvious betting choice.
