Can The Resurgent Tigers Add to Toronto’s Home Woes?

Tigers vs Blue Jays Preview Sees the Opener as a Tight Contest

Can Detroit Inch Closer to the .500 at the Expense of the Blue Jays?

The Detroit Tigers were the hottest team in the American League heading into the MLB All-Star break with eight wins over his last 10 games. Can the Tigers pick up where they left off against a Toronto Blue Jays team, the only squad from the American League East Division with a losing record at home? The Tigers vs Blue Jays preview has Friday’s series opener as a tightly-lined match.

The last time the teams met, the Tigers and Blue Jays combined for seven home runs, 31 hits, and 25 runs with the Tigers winning 14-11 to take three of the four games from the Blue Jays in May. Detroit won the last three games after Toronto had won seven of the previous nine matchups. Twelve of the last 17 games between Detroit and Toronto went under the total.

The MLB score predictions have Detroit with +105 odds to win Friday’s series opener with Toronto at -125 to win outright. There are -225 odds for Detroit at +1.5 on the run line.

Detroit and Toronto are each priced at +25000 in the World Series odds.

Youngsters Delivering For the Tigers

Four of the first six picks in the 2019 MLB Draft participated in the recent MLB All-Star Game. Detroit outfielder Riley Greene joined Baltimore catcher Adley Rutschman, Kansas City shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., and Washington shortstop C.J. Abrams in the All-Star Game. It doesn’t seem to be his last All-Star appearance.

The No. 5 pick in the star-studded 2019 draft, Greene leads the Tigers with 17 home runs and 50 RBIs. He has a .525 slugging percentage against right-handed pitching this season and the same number in road games. That is something to consider here with the Tigers vs Blue Jays preview.

Colt Keith, a fifth-round in 2020, has raised his batting average from .229 to .253 in July.

Led by the hot hitting of Greene and Keith, the total has gone over in four of Detroit’s last six games.

Blue Jays Are Finally Home Again

Toronto might need a refresher course and a reminder of the ground rules before the series gets underway since the Blue Jays haven’t played at home since July 4 when the Houston Astros took two of three games from Toronto.

Vlad Guerrero Jr. is hitting .318 with six home runs and a .465 slugging percentage at home. At times, it feels like he is flying solo. If the Blue Jays continue to sink in the standings, the rumblings that Toronto could trade Guerrero will only get louder.

George Springer is batting .232 at home while Daulton Varsho, Bo Bichette, and Kevin Kiermaier are all hitting under .200 at home. Will that factor into the Tigers vs Blue Jays preview?

The Tampa Bay Rays, Seattle Mariners, and Chicago White Sox are the only American League teams with lower slugging percentages at home than the Blue Jays.

The last five games for Toronto went over the total.

Who’s Hot

  • Genesis Cabrera, Toronto Blue Jays P: Cabrera has surrendered four hits and no runs with seven strikeouts over 6.2 innings in his last eight games.
  • Riley Greene, Detroit Tigers OF: Greene was 11-for-24 with three runs and five RBIs over his last six games.
  • Tyler Holton, Detroit Tigers P: Holton has given up six hits and no runs with six strikeouts over 9.1 innings in his last eight games.
  • Spencer Horwitz, Toronto Blue Jays IF: Horwitz is 6-for-17 with a double and a home run in his last four games.

Who’s Not

  • Beau Briske, Detroit Tigers P: Briske has allowed 12 hits and nine runs with six walks in 8.2 innings in his last six games.
  • Zach Pop, Toronto Blue Jays P: Pop has given up eight hits and six runs with five walks in 5.2 innings in his last seven outings.
  • Jake Rogers, Detroit Tigers C: Rogers is 4-for-23 with seven strikeouts in seven games in July.
  • Justin Turner, Toronto Blue Jays 1B: Turner is 1-for-24 with nine strikeouts in his last six games.

Tigers vs Blue Jays Injury Update

Outfielders Kerry Carpenter and Parker Meadows join pitcher Casey Mize on the injured list for the Tigers.

Shortstop Bo Bichette is questionable for the series opener for the Blue Jays while pitcher Jordan Romano is on the injured list.

Tigers vs Blue Jays Betting Preview

Heading into the weekend series, 15 of the last 20 games between the Tigers and the Blue Jays went under the total.

However, 11 of 14 games for Toronto against American League teams went over the total. The total is currently at 7.5 for the series opener.

The MLB standings today have Detroit in fourth place in the American League Central Division and seven games out of the final playoff spot in the American League. Toronto is in the cellar of the American League East and 9.5 games out of the playoffs.

Only the Chicago White Sox have fewer home wins among American League teams than the Blue Jays.

There will be mostly sunny conditions as the series gets underway on Friday.

Toronto is 30-20 as a favorite but just 14-30 when listed as an underdog. Toronto has covered just four of 15 games as a home underdog.

Detroit has covered 26 of 49 road games with 26 of those games also landing over the total.

A big blow for Toronto is that Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who hit .467 with a double, a triple, two home runs, and five runs scored in the first four games against Detroit this season is on the injured list with a knee injury. Vlad Guerrero is healthy and should be ready to get his cuts in versus the Tigers as he was 9-of-16 with four extra-base hits in the first four meetings against Detroit this season.

Matt Vierling already has two home runs and five RBIs against the Blue Jays this season. Detroit’s 5.50 ERA against the Blue Jays is a concern but most of the issues came out of the bullpen with the starters allowing six runs in 22 innings in the four games.
