Pitching Matchups

Game 1: Dane Dunning (Texas) vs James Paxton (Los Angeles)

The Rangers vs Dodgers series odds and pitching matchups start with right-hander Dane Dunning getting the start in the series opener. Dunning is 4-4 with a 4.09 ERA in 10 starts in 2024, striking out 57 in 50.2 innings of work. He has struggled a bit since returning from the injured list on May 22, allowing three runs in two of his last three starts, including lasting five innings against the Detroit Tigers last Tuesday and giving up three runs on four hits, including two home runs.

Left-hander James Paxton will get the call for the Dodgers in Tuesday’s game, as he looks to improve on his 5-1 record and 4.19 ERA. Paxton has struggled a bit in his last few starts, including taking his first loss of the season last Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates after going just 1.2 innings and allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits while striking out two and walking two.

Game 2: Jon Gray (Texas) vs Walker Buehler (Los Angeles)

Texas will have right-hander Jon Gray making his first start since he returned from the MLB injured list last week. Gray is 2-2 with a 2.12 ERA but had to sit out due to groin troubles late in May. He appeared in relief on Saturday, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings against the San Francisco Giants and allowing just one hit.

The Dodgers will counter with righty Walker Buehler, who is looking to improve on his 1-3 record and 4.82 ERA in his first six starts. Buehler has dealt with his own injury problems that forced him to sit out the 2023 campaign and start this season in May. He has struggled so far, allowing three runs in five of his six starts, including going just three innings against the Pirates last Thursday and giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits while striking out three and walking one.

Game 3: Michael Lorenzen (Texas) vs Yoshinobu Yamamoto (Los Angeles)

The Rangers will have right-hander Michael Lorenzen on the mound for the series finale. Lorenzen is 3-3 with a 3.05 ERA in 10 starts, striking out 45 and walking 28 in 59 innings. The 32-year-old has been putting it together over his last few starts, allowing two or fewer runs in each of his last five outings. He took a no-decision against San Francisco last Friday, going 4.1 innings and giving up two runs on seven hits, including two home runs.

One of the reasons for the Dodgers’ having solid MLB odds to win World Series is rookie right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The 25-year-old Japanese product is 6-2 with a 3.00 ERA, striking out 83 in 72 innings of work. Yamamoto is coming off an impressive outing against the Yankees on Friday, throwing seven shutout innings and allowing just two hits while striking out seven and walking two.

Can Hernandez Stay Hot for Dodgers?

The MLB predictions for the Dodgers’ success have been predicated on players like Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani, and Freddie Freeman being in the team’s batting order. And those players have been great this season. But the biggest bat for Los Angeles of late has belonged to outfielder Teoscar Hernandez.

The 31-year-old has been on a tear, going 9-for-17 over the last four games, including three doubles, four home runs, 10 RBI, and six runs scored. Hernandez is leading Los Angeles with 16 home runs and 48 RBI on the season, adding 14 doubles, a triple and 39 runs scored.

The Rangers would like to see that kind of hot streak from their big bat, outfielder Adolis Garcia. The All-Star is batting just .217 this season and is just 4-for-32 in eight games in May. Garcia snapped a four-game hitless streak with a single in Sunday’s win over the Giants, but Texas needs much more from him. On the season, Garcia has 10 doubles, 13 home runs, 40 RBI and 31 runs scored.

Dodgers Cruise to Series Win at Home

Los Angeles has to be happy to get back to Dodger Stadium, where it is 21-12 this season. The Dodgers should play better in their home ballpark, both on the mound and at the plate.

That’s trouble for the Rangers, who are still trying to get healthy and get into the groove that propelled them to the World Series win last season. The Rangers vs Dodgers series odds favor the home team, and we recommend you go with the favorite in every game of this series.
