First-Place Squads Clash in Big Apple for Weekend Series

Dodgers vs Yankees MLB Odds Slightly Favor Visiting LA

The red-hot New York Yankees try to keep things rolling when they welcome the Los Angeles Dodgers to Yankee Stadium for a three-game weekend series beginning Friday night. Both teams have been living up to expectations for much of this season, so this will be a good test for both.

Los Angeles (39-25) is comfortably atop the NL West standings, leading the second-place San Diego Padres by eight games, the widest margin for a division leader in the majors. The Dodgers have that lead despite going 6-8 over their last 14 games, including losing two of three to the Pittsburgh Pirates this week.

New York is on an eight-game winning streak heading into the weekend series. The Yankees (45-19) have forged a 4.5-game advantage over the second-place Baltimore Orioles in the AL East standings.

Pitching Matchups

Game 1: Yoshinobu Yamamoto (Los Angeles) vs Cody Poteet (New York)

The Dodgers odds in this series are what they are because of their pitching, which will feature righty Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the series opener. The 25-year-old Japanese rookie is 6-2 with a 3.32 ERA in 12 starts this season, striking out 76 in 65 innings of work. He was solid in his last outing, facing the Colorado Rockies last Saturday and going six innings, allowing one run on seven hits while striking out seven and walking one.

New York will counter with right-hander Cody Poteet, who will be making his third start of the campaign, who was called up from Triple-A prior to his last start on Saturday. Poteet is 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA, but he had his troubles in his last outing against the San Francisco Giants. Taking the mound nearly two months after his last MLB start, the 29-year-old went five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits while striking out six and walking one.

Game 2: Gavin Stone (Los Angeles) vs Nestor Cortes (New York)

Los Angeles will have another young hurler going in Saturday’s game, with righty Gavin Stone looking to improve on his 6-2 record and 2.90 ERA. The 25-year-old has been lights out in his last two starts, going a combined 12 shutout innings and allowing seven hits while striking out 13 and walking two. That stretch came after a May 21 start against the Arizona Diamondbacks when he allowed four runs on eight hits.

Left-hander Nestor Cortes will get the call for the Yankees for Saturday’s start. Cortes is 3-4 with a 3.46 ERA, striking out 74 in 75.1 innings over 13 starts. He had some trouble in his last start on Sunday, going 4.1 innings against the Giants and allowing three runs on seven hits, including two home runs, while striking out seven and walking none.

Game 3: Tyler Glasnow (Los Angeles) vs Luis Gill (New York)

Right-hander Tyler Glasnow will start the series finale for the Dodgers, as he looks to add to his MLB-leading 104 strikeouts on the season. Glasnow is 6-4 with a 2.93 ERA in 13 starts in 2024. He took a hard-luck loss in his last start, pitching six innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday and allowing just one run on three hits while striking out nine and walking two in a 1-0 Dodgers setback.

One of the top pitchers in baseball this season will be on the mound for the Yankees in Sunday’s contest. Righty Luis Gil is 8-1 with a 1.82 ERA (second in baseball) in 12 starts in 2024, striking out 85 (ninth in the majors) in 69.1 innings. Gil has been fantastic since the end of April, allowing a total of three runs in his last seven starts, a span of 44.2 innings, while striking out 50. He picked up his seventh straight win on Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins, throwing six shutout innings and giving up just one hit.

Offenses Have Plenty Of Firepower

While the pitching will be a factor, the determination of whether one of these two teams becomes World Series champions will happen at the plate. Both teams are in the top three in baseball in scoring, with the Yankees leading the majors with 321 runs and the Dodgers sitting third with 314. Los Angeles has the edge in team batting average, ranking second at .257 compared to New York at fourth (.256).

Designated hitter Shohei Ohtani has anchored the Dodgers’ potent lineup, ranking third in baseball with a .318 batting average. Ohtani is also tied for eighth in the majors with 15 home runs, adding 17 doubles, two triples, 40 RBI and 43 runs scored. Outfielder Mookie Betts has been almost as effective, batting .312 with 14 doubles, three triples, 10 home runs, 35 RBI and 46 runs scored.

The Yankees have had their own newcomer powering their offense, with outfielder Juan Soto ranking fourth in the majors in both batting average (.318) and RBI (53). He also has 11 doubles, three triples, 17 home runs and 49 runs scored, though his status is up in the air after he left Thursday’s game with forearm soreness and will undergo tests on Friday. Outfielder Aaron Judge will be playing, bringing the most home runs in baseball this season with 21 and the third-most RBI with 54. Judge is batting .289 with 19 doubles, a triple and 47 runs scored.

Yankees Win Series At Home

While Los Angeles is getting the edge in the Dodgers vs Yankees MLB odds, we like New York to take this series, especially if Soto is able to go. The Yankees have been playing great of late, and that momentum is going to help them in front of their home crowd.

Los Angeles is just 18-13 on the road this season and is coming off losses in three of its last series as the visiting team. This will be a great series between two of the best teams in baseball, but by Sunday night, it will be New York coming away with more wins.
