Pitching Matchups
âš¾ Game 1 âš¾
- Andrew Abbott (Cincinnati) vs Ryan Feltner (Colorado)
Left-hander Andrew Abbott will get the series-opening start for Cincinnati, as he tries to bounce back from an ugly outing. Abbott is 3-5 with a 3.29 ERA, recording 46 strikeouts in 63 innings over 11 starts.
His last start came against the St. Louis Cardinals last Tuesday, as he went six innings and allowed six runs on seven hits, including a pair of home runs while striking out three and walking two. That came one start after he threw seven shutout innings against the San Diego Padres on May 21.
The Rockies will have righty Ryan Feltner on the mound on Monday night. Feltner brings a 1-4 record and 5.46 ERA to his 12th start of the MLB season, having struck out 49 over 59.1 innings of work.
Feltner also had a rough time in his most recent start, lasting 4.1 innings against the Cleveland Guardians last Tuesday and giving up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits, including two home runs, while striking out one and walking two.
âš¾ Game 2 âš¾
- Frankie Montas (Cincinnati) vs Ty Blach (Colorado)
Cincinnati will give the ball to righty Frankie Montas for Tuesday’s middle game of the series. Montas is 2-4 with a 4.60 ERA this season, striking out 33 in 47 innings over 10 starts.
Montas hasn’t picked up a win since April 3 and has allowed at least three earned runs in each of his last four starts.
Veteran left-hander Ty Blach has been solid of late, and he’ll make his ninth appearance and sixth start of the season on Tuesday. Blach is 2-2 with a 4.15 ERA, having started each of his last four appearances.
He earned the win in his last outing, going seven innings against the Guardians and allowing two runs on six hits while striking out five and walking two.
âš¾ Game 3 âš¾
- Graham Ashcraft (Cincinnati) vs Dakota Hudson (Colorado)
The final game will see right-hander Graham Ashcraft get the call to start from the Reds. Ashcraft is 4-3 with a 4.76 ERA in 11 starts, striking out 47 over 58.2 innings of work.
He’s struggled a bit of late, allowing at least three earned runs in each of his last five starts, including giving up three on five hits over 4.2 innings against the Cubs on Friday.
Colorado will counter with righty Dakota Hudson for the series finale, as he starts for the 12th time in 2024. Hudson is 2-7 with a 5.02 ERA, but he’s coming off possibly his best start of the campaign. On Friday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Hudson went seven innings and allowed one run on four hits while striking out three and walking one.
Whose Offense Can Click?
Looking at the MLB statistics, both Colorado and Cincinnati rank in the bottom third of baseball in runs scored. The Rockies’ schedule has been difficult of late, but they had scored four or more runs in six straight games before managing just one total run over their last two contests.
In their three-game series against the Cubs over the weekend, the Reds scored five runs in each contest, going 2-1 against their division rival.
Outfielder Jake Fraley had three hits on Sunday and enters this series on a seven-game hitting streak. Fraley is batting a team-best .295 with six doubles, a triple, a home run, eight RBI and 20 runs scored.
Outfielder Spencer Steer has been the team’s most consistent run producer, driving in 35 while batting .234 and adding 13 doubles, a triple, six home runs, and 27 runs scored.
Third baseman Ryan McMahon has been one of the biggest bats in the Colorado lineup again this season, batting .284 and leading the team with 10 home runs and 34 RBI.
He has also hit 10 doubles, drawn 30 walks, and scored 29 times. Catcher Elias Diaz had two hits in Saturday’s loss to the Dodgers and is 12th in baseball with a .301 batting average.
Rockies Eke Out Series Win
After running the gauntlet of three straight series against division-leading opponents, Colorado is going to like being at home against a fellow last-place squad in this series.
The Rockies are only 13-14 at home this season, but they should add to that this week. As our Reds vs Rockies preview has shown, neither team is very dominant on the mound.
Cincinnati won’t go quietly, as it has been playing well and will get some runs on the board, as many opponents do at Coors Field.
But when the dust settles, we like Colorado to get the series win. Make sure you include the Rockies winning and the over among your MLB picks and parlays for this series.
