Least MLB Wins Opening Odds

Athletics, Nationals, and Rockies Among “Favorites”

We continue our MLB preseason prop series with a look at which team will have the lowest MLB season win total come October. The Washington Nationals cashed our tickets last season when they put up just 55 wins. With their $42,000,000 payroll, the lowest in baseball, the Oakland Athletics are +350 to be the worst team in baseball.

In addition to the Athletics, you don’t need the MLB latest betting news or MLB player stats to know that the Pittsburgh Pirates will also be in the discussion as they are most seasons. Let’s take a deeper look at the teams who are likely to have the least MLB wins this season starting with the Bucs.

Pirates Always In The Mix

The Pittsburgh Pirates are the fifth choice (+650) to have the least amount of wins in 2023, a season after they managed just 62. This will be a team that will have to manufacture runs on most nights from the top of their line-up which will feature O’Neil Cruz, Bryan Reynolds, and newly acquired Andrew McCutchen. Some decent names here but outside of Carlos Santana it’s hard to pinpoint where the power will come from. Their Spring will likely reflect what the season has in store. The Pirates hit just .233 in the Spring with only the Miami Marlins worse.

Now, we know not to put too much emphasis on camp results, but it’s hard to imagine that this Pirates team will hit enough to overcome their pitching which has already suffered an injury to JT Brubaker who was going to be their second starter behind Mitch Keller. It’s always perplexing why the Pirates take the television money and use it for payroll while refusing to acknowledge that winning is supposed to be the goal.

You can bet that the Pirates will be within five games of the worst teams in baseball in 2023. Outside of the Pirates, there is another team that will be hard to beat for the least Major League Baseball wins.

Oakland Athletics Easy Favorites

Most season wins total projections barely have the Oakland Athletics in the 60-win range. If that’s true, the Oakland Athletics will win this prop bet with ease. This is an organization that has an owner in John Fisher who seems more occupied with a move to Las Vegas than they do putting a winning product on the field.

The Athletics will take their $60,000,000 payroll into 2023, trying. Speaking of Las Vegas, catcher Shea Langeliers will start behind the plate and hit first after playing 92 games at AAA Vegas where he hit just .218 but has been compared to Buster Posey defensively.

A sure bright spot to watch in 2023. You can see where the Athletics are making moves now that will likely make them competitive when they do move. Sean Murphy was traded for various prospects in the offseason. Oakland has always been a team to overcome their market shortcomings, but this team is not projected to find success until they’re in another city.

100 Loss Reds (+450) Worth A Prop Wager

The Cincinnati Reds are excited about their pitching rotation starting with Hunter Greene who will get the opening day start against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Greene was just 5-13 last season but most projections have him around the .500 mark.

That should give you an idea of where the Reds are if their ace is expected to be a couple of games under .500. We don’t think Cincinnati will start 3-22 as they did in 2022, but no matter how excited the team is about a staff that includes Nick Lodolo and Graham Ashcroft, both guys that still have to prove they can pitch at the MLB level. Star Joey Votto will start the season on the IL with his surgically repaired left shoulder and bicep still on the mend. There is no timetable for Votto’s return.

The Reds have very little depth behind an unproven line-up and bullpen, making them the perfect candidate to cash our least MLB wins prop.

That does it for our 2023 MLB least-win total prop preview. We’re just a few short hours away from the start of the MLB season but don’t expect this season to be any different for the Athletics, Reds, or Pirates. All the best this season.
