Major League Baseball Tuesday Recap: Ohtani, Angels Fail to Get Needed Win

Public Wins 8 of 15!

Our MLB Tuesday recap shows a tiny win for bettors after the Texas Rangers and Washington Nationals failed to get late moneyline victories. Favorites also pulled out an 8-7 record, with the Pittsburgh Pirates loss to the Colorado Rockies, 10-1, being the biggest favorite (-175) who failed to get a win. We’ll start our MLB daily recap with the game that drew the most interest from bettors followed by the game on the Major League Baseball schedule that garnered the most amount of wagers.

Ohtani, Angels Fail to Get Needed Win

The good old ‘Get-Out Game’ matched Framber Valdez from the Astros against Shohei Ohtani for the Angels. With all the hype surrounding Ohtani, you almost will never see the public go against the right-hander who suffered his first loss on the season (4-1).

Ohtani threw seven innings of six-hit ball, giving up three earned runs in the process. Usually good enough to get a win but the Los Angeles offense managed just three hits and one run to go with 14 strikeouts. That’s not good enough to support Ohtani who will likely get moved sooner than later if the Angels are not in contention. 70% over the moneyline money wagered came in on the Angels behind 59% of the total bets. 53,703 tickets were written according to our monitored sportsbooks, making it the heaviest wagered on match-up of the night. Let’s continue our Tuesday MLB recap with a look at the game that almost every bettor was on.

Bettors Make Solid Choice In The Phils

We are constantly preaching about betting games that are a friend to your bankroll and for one night the public listened. 86% of the money came in on the Philadelphia Phillies (-143) over the Toronto Blue Jays.

The top four games by percentage wagered all went the public way except the Minnesota Twins (-115) and all were games under -150. The Phillies closed -135 in the desert but there were some books that closed them as high as -143. The Fightin’ Phils have struggled this season but starter Aaron Nola still has the respect of bettors and oddsmakers.

The righty ran his record to 3-2 after throwing six innings of five-hit ball, allowing just two earned runs. After Nola left, the Phillies pen combined for three innings of perfect baseball. Nick Castellanos was 3-4 with a double (14) and a homer (5). Castellanos is now hitting .317 and should improve on those numbers with Bryce Harper back in the line-up. We conclude our Tuesday MLB recap with a look at another possible trend to add to your betting arsenal this week.

American League East: Bettors Friend

Today we’re going to look at what division has been the best to wager on. We were a little surprised to know that only the American League is the only division to produce a profit. Obviously, the Tampa Bay Rays start has a lot to do with it but the results weren’t even close.

AL East teams are a combined 114-69 (.623) in 2023 with 1639 units of profit. Second, is the National League West at 92-89 (.508) but -177 units. As a favorite, AL East teams are 87-36 (.707) +1644 units, and 51-18 (.739) +1086 units as a home favorite.

Tampa Bay leads the list after an incredible 29-8 start (+764 units). They’re followed by the Boston Red Sox (+607), Baltimore Orioles (+563), and the Toronto Blue Jays (+7). Only the New York Yankees have lost bettors’ money (-302). The worst division in baseball to bet on has been the American League Central with 2,685 units lost, based on a straight $100 wager on each team. Just for the fun of it let’s look at the historical numbers, or at least go back to 2005.

No division has produced a combined winner in 18 years, but the American League West has come the closest with 7,215 units lost. The worst in that span is the National League Central (7665-7864) -42,742 units. The Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs have combined to lose 25,405 units over the last 18 seasons. Take that knowledge to the window this week. That does it for our Tuesday MLB recap, we’ll be back tomorrow to go over Wednesday’s action as well as diving into which stadiums have been the biggest nightmare for bettors over the years.
