Mets Aim for Third Straight Win Against Yankees

Mets vs Yankees Predictions: The Yankees Don't Hit Lefties Well Overall

The New York Mets will look to earn a season-series win over the New York Yankees tonight. They’ll begin a two-game series in the Bronx after adding two wins in Queens in late June.

The Yankees began the season hot but have since cooled down. On the other hand, the Mets were horrible at the beginning of the year but are now in MLB playoff position in the National League.

Both MLB teams expect to make deals at the MLB trade deadline to bolster their rosters down the stretch. Recently, the Yankees and Mets haven’t had the most success with deadline deals.

  • That said, the Yankees are currently favorites for Game 1 in the Bronx. New York is -154 on the moneyline, with the total sitting at 8.5. However, the Over is juiced to -120 at this time.

Below, we’ll provide our Game 1 Mets vs Yankees predictions for tonight’s action. Don’t miss out on BetMGM promos for this game!

The Mets Already Made a Trade

The New York Mets have acquired TJ Shook from the Milwaukee Brewers. He should give New York more bullpen depth, specifically for lefties.

The Mets sent Tyler Jay, another lefty, to the Brewers in the exchange.

This info won’t change our MLB picks today, of course.

Are The Yankees Just a Two-Man Show?

Earlier last week, Luis Severino told the media he texted with his former Yankees teammates. He told them he believes they are scared of him since he hasn’t pitched against them this year.

Severino joked with the media and told them the Yankees have just two good hitters. He implied that Aaron Judge and Juan Soto were the two prime hitters and that the rest of the team was struggling.

Severino is right.

Except the Yankees just went on a barrage yesterday, scoring nine runs without needing an Aaron Judge home run.

We’ll see if the Yankees can continue this success against the Mets tonight. After all, the NY Yankees score at a weak rate right now.

Mets vs Yankees Predictions & Preview

⚾ Game 1 ⚾

Tuesday, 7:05 pm ET
Jose Quintana vs. Luis Gil

The Mets will roll with Jose Quintana in the opener of the two-game series. He’s a left-handed pitcher who has held his last 98 batters to a .295 wOBA.

He can thank his 53.7% ground ball rate and 8.2% walk rate for his success in holding runners off the bases over that time.

  • Additionally, Quintana has limited teams to 19.4% of fly balls and 22.4% of line drives in the last 30 days. He’s really putting up quality numbers across the board.

That said, Quintana has only added 21.4% strikeouts and has allowed a .195 ISO. He’s struggled with power to righties.

The MLB odds today don’t indicate how good Quintana has been over the last few months.

Ultimately, Aaron Judge is the one batter he’ll have to watch out for. Judge has smoked a .500 ISO and wOBA of .629 against his last 27 lefties. However, the combined lineup has hit just a .110 ISO and wOBA of .256 with 23.8% of strikeouts against lefties over the previous month.

These numbers include Judge’s impressive MLB stats. You could only imagine how poorly the rest of the lineup has hit lefties over the last month.

The Yankees have been good at forcing walks against lefties lately. But again, Quintana hasn’t been walking batters at a super high rate. As long as Quintana pitches around Judge in tonight’s game, he likely won’t have any issues keeping the Yankees off the board.

Lefty Power For The Mets

The lefties in the Mets’ lineup should explode tonight.

Luis Gil will take the hill for the Yankees. He’s a right-handed pitcher who has allowed a .302 ISO and wOBA of .380 to his last 45 lefties faced.

  • Gil’s strikeout rate has dipped more than 4% over the last 30 days. He’s also allowed more than 29% of fly balls and just 38.2% of ground balls over the last month.

Additionally, Gil has allowed 45.5% of hard contact, including 56.2% of hard contact to lefties.

The righties can get on by being patient and earning walks. Meanwhile, the lefties can get on by hitting for power against Gil.

The Mets’ projected lineup has hit a .192 ISO and wOBA of .350 against righties over the last month. The lineup has also struck out only 18.8% and has walked 11.2%.

These Mets have been much more consistent offensively and should have four lefties in the lineup to face Gil. Those lefties include Francisco Lindor and Brandon Nimmo. Those two have been sensational against righties all year. Then there’s Jeff McNeil, who has had a power surge since returning from the MLB All-Star Break.

Don’t be surprised if McNeil or another lefty hits a home run against Gil.

  • Let’s back the Mets at +141 to earn the win in the Bronx. A win here would give the Mets this season-series victory after they already won two games at home against the Yankees earlier this season.

Our Mets vs Yankees predictions ultimately have the Mets earning a win tonight but the Yankees pulling through tomorrow.
