MLB 2023 Win Total Opening Odds: The Mets Should be The Best Team
Astro, Mets +500 favorites - Yankees, Dodgers, Braves +600Â

Let’s continue our MLB preseason prop series with a look at which team will have the highest MLB 2023 win total come October. The Los Angeles Dodgers cashed our tickets last season when they put up 111 wins. This season the ‘Boys in Blue’ are +600 to repeat. The MLB betting odds on this prop show a couple of surprises that we’ll discuss in-depth as the race to the top of the MLB standings is right around the corner. Let’s turn our attention to three teams that should be considered when placing this wager.
With a Massive Payroll, the Mets Should be The Best Team
Many who have read our previews in the past may have caught wind that we’re not all that happy with teams outspending others to win a World Series. This year, Steve Cohan’s payroll will be around $334,000,000 or $292,000,000 more than the Oakland Athletics.
Don’t get it twisted, the Mets aren’t doing anything the league isn’t allowing, and while we play under these set of rules that don’t even require teams to adhere to a spending floor at the bare minimum, we might as well take advantage of teams in a sport where the highest spenders are more times than not, the teams who play deep into October.
The new schedule where teams only play teams inside their division 52 times, that’s 24 fewer than a year ago. When you play in baseball’s toughest division that is a major advantage when betting this prop.
The difference between the Mets, Phillies, and Braves is razor thin but we like betting on teams that might start the season with a chip on their shoulder, and after losing the division on the last week of the season after an Atlanta sweep, the chip is firmly on the Mets shoulders. Let’s continue our 2023 MLB win total prop preview by turning our attention to the Houston Astros.
Defending Champion Astros Co-Favorite at +500
The elephant in the room heading into the 2023 MLB season is what effect losing Justin Verlander to the New York Mets has on the Astros who seem to be a team that is built to be relevant for years to come. Framber Valdez (17-6, 2.82 era) will be the staff ace, followed by Christian Javier (12-9, 3.78), Jose Urquidy (10-9, 4.33), Luis Garcia (11-9, 4.04era) and Hunter Brown (7-5, 3.60 era).
Not a bad rotation but not one that matches up with a staff that includes Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer. Also, it should be pointed out that Jose Altuve will start the season on the IL after suffering a fractured thumb at the World Baseball Classic). At best Altuve will be back in a couple of months. With that being said, no one is shedding tears for the six-time defending AL West champions who should make it seven in 2023.
Jays +1200 Worth Long Shot Wager
When you look at the Toronto lineup it’s hard to argue that this team could indeed win 100 games after a 92-win season in 2022. According to the current season win total odds, the Jays are the seventh choice at +1200. If you’ve been watching Spring Training baseball, there is a lot to like about John Schneider’s team starting with the starters.
Alex Manoah, Kevin Gausman, and Jose Berrios look incredibly sharp and could end up being one of the most overlooked trios in the game. Toronto led MLB in 2022 with a .264 batting average while backed by a pitching staff that owned a 3.87era (15th). If that ERA can get in the 3.60 range, expect Toronto to be a strong candidate to cash an MLB 2023 win total ticket.
That does it for our MLB 2023 win total prop preview. Some of these don’t need a lot of thinking behind them because there are six teams that can be a legit betting option when it comes to wagering on season-long props At the end of the season, the New York Mets should have the most wins of anyone in baseball because that’s what they paid for.
