MLB Tuesday Recap: The Home Favorites Paid Off Rather Well On a Busy Tuesday

Tampa Bay Dials Long Distance Again to Top Boston for its 11th Win In A Row!

Minnesota Twins, Texas Rangers Need Extra Innings to Post Home Victories

Even with Shohei Ohtani, Corbin Burnes, Jacob deGrom, Pablo Lopez, Gerrit Cole, Shane McClanahan and Alek Manoah among the starting pitchers in the 15 games played on Tuesday, just five games finished under the total and that was just one of the storylines in the MLB Tuesday recap.

The favorites finished 11-4 and when breaking down the MLB scores, 10 of the games ended up being decided by at least three runs.

The streaks continued as the Tampa Bay Rays won their 11th in a row and St. Louis rookie outfielder Jordan Walker now has a hit in each of his first 11 games. Luis Arraez made some history by hitting for the cycle in Miami’s road win against defending National League champion Philadelphia.

Here is a breakdown of how the action played out on Tuesday.

Rays Win Again

The biggest news among the 10 games in the MLB Tuesday recap when the home team was favored came when the Tampa Bay Rays, priced at -164, got home runs from Diaz, Parades, Brandon Lowe and Josh Lowe on the way to a 7-2 win over the visiting Boston Red Sox to improve to 11-0. The Rays are the only undefeated team in the MLB team standings and are two wins away from the best start in MLB history during the modern era.

Despite some control problems, Shane McClanahan allowed just one run in five innings for the Rays.

The most action-packed games were Baltimore’s 12-8 victory against Oakland and the Chicago Cubs‘ 14-9 win against visiting Seattle.

Ryan Mountcastle tied an Orioles record with nine RBIs as he had a three-run homer and a grand slam. Catcher Adley Rutschman improved his average to .395 with two hits and he also walked twice.

Dylan Lee and Nick Anderson combined to retire the last five hitters as the Atlanta Braves held off visiting Cincinnati in a game when nearly all the money came down on the Braves.

Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels surrendered just one hit in seven innings. However, he did walk five batters as he had to pitch himself out of trouble at times. Catcher Logan O’Hoppe homered in support of his batterymate in the 2-0 win over the Washington Nationals.

Working Overtime

When looking at the MLB Tuesday recap, there were a pair of extra-inning games with the home team picking up walk-off wins.

Jonah Heim’s three-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Texas Rangers the 8-5 win over the visiting Kansas City Royals. Jacob deGrom struck out nine batters to give him 27 in his first three games with the Rangers. That set the franchise record that was held by Hall of Fame Nolan Ryan since 1989. As was the case during his much of his time with the New York Mets, deGrom did not factor into the decision.

The Chicago White Sox forced extra innings thanks to Luis Robert Jr. hitting a solo homer in the top of the ninth inning. The winning run came across on a throwing error in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Minnesota, listed at -167 to win at home, the 4-3 win.

According to the moneylines, one of the most competitive games was expected to be the one between the Miami Marlins and Philadelphia Phillies. It might have played out that way if Miami’s Luis Arraez, the leading hitter in the majors didn’t come through with the first cycle in Marlins’ history in Miami’s 8-4 win.

Cardinals, Pirates Strike Late

It is easy to excuse those who got a little anxious when they rode with the road favorites on Tuesday with two of the five games with the home team listed as the underdog being tied in the ninth inning.

After the Pittsburgh Pirates squandered a two-run lead in the top of the ninth inning, rookie Ji-Hwan Bae hit a walk-off three-run home run to lift the Pirated to a 7-4 win over the Houston Astros. The host Pirates were priced at +150 against a Houston team expected to make a run at another World Series title.

With Ji Man Choi homering earlier in the game for the Pirates, it was the first time in MLB history that two Korean-born players homered in the same game.

St. Louis got home runs from Tommy Edman, Nolan Gorman and Juan Yepez to top Colorado 9-6. Gorman’s HR started a three-run rally in the ninth innings and completed a rally from four runs down and pay out at -165.

No Such Drama in The Other Three Games

The New York Yankees scored five times in the third inning and twice in the fourth to erase an early two-run lead by the host Cleveland Guardians as the Yankees rolled to the 11-2 win with New York priced at -185 to pick up its third road win of the season. Franchy Cordero had the big hit with a three-run homer.

Corbin Burnes looked every bit the part of a former Cy Young Award winner with no runs allowed and eight strikeouts in eight innings in a 7-1 win over Arizona. The game was scoreless until Willy Adames began a five-run rally in the seventh inning with a solo home run.

San Francisco (+140) got a two-run double in the first inning from former Dodger Joc Pederson to top favored Los Angeles 5-0.
