MLB Wednesday Betting Recap
Betting Public Dominated the Books With Winners in 12 of 15 gamesÂ

MLB Wednesday Results were all about the players getting the best of the books. According to the bet percentages from our monitored books, only the Nationals (92%), Orioles (54%), and Red Sox (62%) ended up being public losers. Overall, the ‘Joes’ were +874 units, making them an overall winner (+681 units) to start the season. We’ll break down those numbers further and get into the latest MLB betting news and MLB team standings to get you set up for another big day on the diamond.
Tigers, Jays Drew The Most Wagers
Over 72,000 wagers were taken on the Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays yesterday, making it the most important game for the books to win. Even with a moneyline that showed Toronto at -300 at times, that never scares the public who put 87% of their wagers behind the Blue Jays and Ken Gausman.
This has never been a recommended way to play over the course of a season, but Toronto got the job done, 4-3. Although the books took it on the chin overall, they did win two of the four most wagered-on games with the Orioles’ 8-4 loss to the Athletics being one of the four losses by the public.
Favorites Continue to Cash Tickets But Buyers Beware
It’s early in the year and things will even out, but after MLB Wednesday Results were in the can, favorites continued to cash tickets with 117 winners in the first 185 games (63.24%). Last night, 12 of the 15 favorites were winners with the Orioles (-198), Phillies (-210), and Rangers (-168) being the exception. This season the favorites have produced $542 for every $100 wagered if you were on the favorites blindly.
We also want to remind you that the record is not uncommon but finishing in the green is. Last season, the favorites were 1472-954 (.607) but even with a winning percentage over 60%, the public still ended up being losers with $4328 lost. Over the last three seasons combined, favorites are 3023-2013 (.600) but overall losers with a $7426 loss on a 4100 wager. Since 2005, only the 2020 Covid season produced a profit by betting favorites (542-353, +$847).
The good news is, there is a sweet spot if you must wager on the favorites and that’s right between -115 to -140. Over the last two seasons, a wager on a small favorite is 453-345 (.568), producing $1129 of profit. You’ll notice that the winning percentage is lower but the winnings are higher because you’re throwing games out of the equation that is -141 and higher. This takes away the massive losses suffered when -200 favorite losses a few games.
As Expected, Rays Top MLB Team Betting Standings
At 12-0, it’s not a surprise that the Tampa Bay Rays are leading the money-won standings early on, but it’s not by as much as you would think. Using a straight $100 wager as our guide, the Rays are +$571 on the season but only hold a $16 dollar lead over the surprising Arizona Diamondbacks (+$555). Coming in in the third position is the Pittsburgh Pirates at $326.
There are some things to be aware of moving forward. The books will continue to ask bettors to lay massive numbers with Tampa moving forward (-240 vs Boston, today). We suspect that the Rays will be a playoff team but their early schedule hasn’t exactly been against the top teams in baseball. The Pirates have been a terrific story but with a team that already lacks depth, a loss like Oneil Cruz and JT Brubaker could be the beginning of the end.
The Diamondbacks might continue to be a better wager than the Rays or Bucco’s with a road series against the Miami Marlins starting tomorrow. Game one already has them as a dog and there hasn’t been much buzz despite a series against the Los Angeles Dodgers that might have shown that the D’backs are the ones to watch in the NL West this season.
That concluded our look back at the MLB results for Wednesday, remember, take the smaller favorites and you’ll make your bankroll happy at the end of the season.
