Opponents Seeing Red When Reds’ De La Cruz Gets On Base

Stolen Base Picks Coming Through in the Elly De La Cruz Prop Bets So Far in 2024 Season

Cincinnati’s 22-Year-Old Shortstop Elly De La Cruz On Pace For 101 Stolen Bases

No Major League Baseball player has swiped at least 100 bases in the regular season since Vince Coleman accomplished the feat with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1987.

Thirteen of the 21 seasons with at least 100 stolen bases took place before 1900 but plenty of money has been coming in on Cincinnati’s Elly De La Cruz in the prop bets as he has a chance to steal more than 100 bases.

Coming into the season, De La Cruz had -115 odds to steal more than 41.5 bases. De La Cruz already has 30 stolen bases in 48 MLB games after stealing 35 in 98 games as a rookie.

Uncover Exclusive Picks & Predictions From Our Experts.

De La Cruz is tied for ninth at +4000 in the odds to be the National League Most Valuable Player.

When looking at the Cincinnati Reds standings, the Reds are in last place in the National League Central Division with only the Miami Marlins and Colorado Rockies having worse records among National League teams than Cincinnati’s mark of 20-28. Cincinnati is fifth among NL teams with a 26-22 record against the run line.

Cincinnati is 11th at +5000 in the odds of winning the National League pennant. The Reds are tied at 19th with +10000 odds of winning the World Series.

Hitting the Ground Running

De La Cruz did not steal his first base as a rookie until his third game. He had at least two stolen bases in three of his last eight games in 2023.

He had 35 steals in 43 attempts in 98 games as a rookie as he didn’t make his MLB debut until June 6.

De La Cruz had 17 stolen bases in 29 games in April. He is 12-for-14 on stolen bases in May. When considering Elly De La Cruz prop bets, there has only been on stretch of more than four games when De La Cruz failed to steal a base.

At his current pace, he would finish the 2024 season with 101 stolen bases as De La Cruz has more stolen bases than 15 MLB teams so far this season.

The next closest player to De La Cruz in stolen bases is Brice Turang of the Milwaukee Brewers. However, Turang is 12 stolen bases behind De La Cruz.

More Than Just an Elite Base Runner

Since 1900, only Maury Wills in 1962, Lou Brock in 1974, Ricky Henderson in 1980, 1982 and 1983, and Vince Coleman in 1985, 1986, and 1987 have stolen at least 100 bases.

They combined to average 5.1 home runs in the MLB seasons when they had at least 100 stolen bases.

De La Cruz already has nine home runs and at this pace, he would finish with the first season in MLB history with 30 home runs and 100 stolen bases. The Elly De La Cruz prop bets have been very popular options so far this season.

Getting Pitches to Hit

Cincinnati ranks last among the 30 MLB teams with a .216 team batting average and is 28th with a .294 on-base percentage.

With very little help for De La Cruz until Matt McLain gets back on the field, it would be easy for teams to pitch around De La Cruz.

However, putting De La Cruz on base with IW’s could prove to be costly with the way that he can make things happen on the basepaths.

De La Cruz struck out in every 2.7 at-bats as a rookie. He is at the same level so far this season. De La Cruz is on pace to walk 74 times after drawing 35 bases on balls in 2023.

He is hitting .262 with an on-base percentage of .355 and a .483 slugging percentage. He had a .235 batting average as a rookie with an on-base percentage of .300 and a .410 slugging percentage.

Getting Started Early

De La Cruz won’t turn 23 until January so he could make some history.

The youngest MLB player to steal 100 bases in a season was Henderson as he had 100 stolen bases in 1980 at the age of 21.

Henderson had 130 steals in 1982 when he was 23. Billy Hamilton (111 steals in 1889), Coleman (110 steals in 1985), and Jim Fogarty (102 steals in 1887) were all 23 when they stole 100 bases.

What’s Next?

When looking at recent MLB results, De La Cruz had an RBI double in support of Andrew Abbott as the Cincinnati Reds opened a three-game series against the San Diego Padres with a 2-0 win.

Next up will be three games at home against the National League West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers followed by the St. Louis Cardinals playing a three-game series in Cincinnati.

Eighteen of the 30 stolen bases for De La Cruz this season have come at the Great American Ballpark.
