Phillies vs Mariners Betting Trends

  • The Philadelphia Phillies have failed to cover in 10 of their last 13 games, lowering their record against the run line to 54-54. As for the Over/Under, the Phillies are just 49-54-5.

Nobody, however, has covered less frequently than the Seattle Mariners (47-63), who sport a cover rate of just 42.7%. They’ve also been unreliable for Over/Under bettors, going 47-58-5.

That’s important to remember when analyzing 2024 MLB lines.

Down But Certainly Not Out

The first-place Phillies are in midst of their toughest stretch of the season, having dropped four straight and six of their last eight to shrink their National League East lead to 6.5 games. Furthermore, they are only 3-9 since the All-Star break.

Following a three-game sweep at the hands of the Yankees, star first baseman Bryce Harper implored his MLB team to “cowboy up and play the right way.”

Harper went 0-for-5 in Thursday’s 6-5 loss at Citizens Bank Park and is mired in a 1-for-30 slump, the worst of his 13-year career.

Despite that difficult stretch, the Phillies continue to sport the NL’s best record at 65-43 and are among the favorites to win the World Series in the MLB power rankings.

  • In fact, at +500, they own the second-shortest odds behind the Dodgers (+300).

The Phillies, bolstered by their potent lineup and elite rotation, have outscored opponents by 102 runs. The only other club to exceed triple digits is the Yankees, whose run differential is plus-118.

Through it all, bettors may want to overlook the Phillies’ recent struggles against the run line (1-6 in last seven).

Race for First

Seattle is also in first place, albeit in a virtual tie with Houston in the American League West. The Mariners (57-53) dropped two of three in Boston to conclude a 4-2 road trip and just 5-7 in the second half.

They’ve climbed atop the division largely on the strength of their pitching staff, which leads the majors with 66 quality starts and a 3.46 ERA.

Right-hander George Kirby (8-7, 3.04 ERA) has been their most productive starter, though multiple arms have been impressive.

As such, Seattle’s odds of winning the AL pennant have climbed to +1200. Its World Series odds, meanwhile, are +2500.

As well as the Mariners have performed in the win-loss column, they coincidentally remain a liability for bettors. In fact, their 42.7% cover rate is the lowest in baseball.

That includes just 22-32 at T-Mobile Park, where they’ll be for the next 10 games against the Phillies, Tigers and Mets.

Their run differential is just plus-21, though they should get a boost from outfielder Randy Arozarena, whom they acquired from Tampa Bay prior to this week’s deadline.

Series Probables

Game 1

  • Friday, 9:40 p.m. ET
  • Tyler Phillips vs Bryan Woo

Phillips has been outstanding since being called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on July 5, going 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA over his first four appearances (three starts).

He threw a four-hit shutout against Cleveland in his last start, extending his scoreless streak to 18 innings. The 26-year-old right-hander is holding opponents to a .195 average and .570 OPS, per Phillies scores.

  • Seattle counters with Woo, who is 4-1 with a 2.35 ERA. Woo threw four shutout innings against the White Sox in his most recent appearance, lowering his ERA for the month to 4.15.

This comes not long after the 24-year-old right-hander missed three weeks with a strained hamstring.

Be sure to keep that in mind when making your Phillies vs Mariners MLB picks.

Game 2

  • Saturday, 9:40 p.m. ET
  • Koby Allard vs Bryce Miller

Allard makes his second appearance with Philadelphia after being promoted from the minor leagues. The 26-year-old southpaw replaces All-Star Ranger Suarez, who landed on the injured list with lower back tightness.

Allard threw 63 pitches over four innings against Cleveland his first time out, allowing three runs on six hits.

  • He faces Miller, who is 8-7 with a 3.46 ERA. July was one of Miller’s best months, as he gave up only five runs over 25 innings for a 1.80 ERA. He also struck out 18 and walked just one.

Game 3

  • Sunday, 4:10 p.m. ET
  • Zack Wheeler vs Logan Gilbert

The Yankees tagged Wheeler for seven runs over five innings in his last start, causing him to slip to third (+280) on the NL Cy Young odds board behind Atlanta’s Chris Sale (+120) and Pittsburgh’s Paul Skenes (+150).

Despite that, his overall numbers are still very impressive: 10-5, 2.94 ERA.

Gilbert, meanwhile, is 6-7 with a 3.11 ERA. Despite giving up 12 runs (eight earned) over his last two outings, he leads the majors with a .90 WHIP.
