Profar A Key Contributor For the Surging San Diego Padres

While some of his current and former teammates garner more attention, it is Jurickson Profar who leads the San Diego Padres in on-base percentage and slugging percentage. He is one of the reasons why the Padres are currently in a playoff position in the National League.

  • The Jurickson Profar stats have the Padres outfielder closing in on his career-highs in home runs and RBIs as he is having the best season in his 11 MLB seasons.

Profar and the Padres have won all three series’ since the end of the MLB All-Star break heading into a huge series with the National League West Division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Padres are 10th at +3300 in the odds of winning the World Series while the Dodgers continue to have the shortest championship odds at +350.

A quick peek at the MLB standings shows that the Padres are 6.5 games behind the Dodgers in the National League West standings and one game ahead of defending National League champion Arizona. If the playoffs began today, San Diego would hold down one of the three wild-card spots.

  • When looking at the MLB picks and parlays, San Diego is priced at +130 to win Tuesday’s series opener against the Dodgers.

Keep on reading for more on a player named the Player of the Week thanks to his recent hitting streak.

Profar Swinging a Hot Bat

When looking at the Jurickson Profar stats, Profar was 5-for-34 in his final nine games leading into the MLB All-Star Game. Profar had a hit but the National League fell to the American League in the MLB All-Star Game.

Profar was 0-for-4 with a strikeout as the Padres lost to the Cleveland Guardians in the first game after the All-Star Game.

Even though the Padres evened the series with the Guardians with a 7-0 win the next day, Profar was 0-for-4 again as his batting average dipped under .300 for the first time since April 27.

Profar was 10-for-26 with seven runs, four home runs, and eight RBIs over the next six games. More importantly, the Padres won all six games.

That was enough for Profar to be named MLB Player of the Week as he had two hits in the series finale with Cleveland, he had a double and two home runs in a three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals and had four hits with two home runs in the first two games of a series against the Baltimore Orioles.

The Second Time Is The Charm

Profar began his career with the Texas Rangers and in his final MLB season with the Rangers in 2018, he had career-highs with 20 home runs and 77 RBIs.

He was part of a three-team trade and had another season with 20 home runs with the Oakland A’s. After that season, he was dealt to San Diego.

After hitting .227 and .243 in his final two years in his first stint with the Padres, Profar was signed as a free agent by Colorado. After hitting .236 with eight home runs in 111 games in 2023, he was released by one of the worst MLB teams. Four days later, he was signed by the Padres.

The rest – as they say – is history.

After hitting .295 in 14 baseball games to wrap up the 2023 season, Profar began to deliver the hits with a .322 batting average in April. That was followed by a .344 average in May. He finished May with a .330 batting average as he was challenging for the batting lead.

He is also a career .281 hitter in the postseason.

Profar has been delivering in the MLB prop bets with seven multi-hit games in July.

He has nine home runs at home and nine more on the road with a .431 batting average on the first pitch of an at-bat. While most of his plate appearances have come while hitting either second or third in the lineup, Profar does have a .419 batting average and a slugging percentage of .651 as the leadoff hitter.

Padres-Dodgers To Renew Acquaintances

It would be an understatement to say that things got a little heated between the Padres and Dodgers earlier this season when Profar took exception to an inside pitch from Gavin Stone of the Dodgers.

Profar glared in the direction of the Dodgers pitcher and not long after that, Los Angeles catcher Will Smith exchanged words with the Padres outfielder.

When Smith was asked about the exchange, he said the Dodgers would not throw at Profar because he was “kind of irrelevant.”

Profar’s numbers against the Dodgers aren’t close to what he has done against other teams as he has a .231 batting average with eight strikeouts in 26 at-bats. Ironically, he has been hit by a pitch seven times this season and none of those came when he faced the Dodgers.

Let’s see if he can come through in this series against the Dodgers. After the games on Tuesday and Wednesday, the teams won’t meet again until Sept. 24-26 in Los Angeles.

After the series with the Dodgers, Profar and the Padres don’t play another team currently holding down an MLB playoff spot until the Minnesota Twins come to Petco Park from Aug. 19-21.

That is followed by huge series against the New York Mets and the St. Louis Cardinals as those are two of the teams in contention for wild-card spots in the National League.
