Angels vs Red Sox Betting Trends

The Los Angeles Angels are 5-7 against the run line, but just 1-5 over their last six games. A majority of Los Angeles’ games have trended toward the Over, as the Angels are 7-5 against the Over/Under.

Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox are 8-5 ATS, including 3-3 over their last six. As for the Over/Under, the Red Sox are 7-5-1.

Be sure to keep that in mind when assessing the MLB odds in our Angels vs Red Sox preview.

Is Trout Back?

Mike Trout has looked rejuvenated, fueling hopes of another MVP-caliber season for the future Hall of Famer. The 32-year-old Trout already has six homers and a 1.195 OPS, not to mention two stolen bases.

It is a sign he’s healthy again after averaging just 72.5 games over the last four seasons.

As is usually the case though, Trout needs more help. The Angels are just 6-6 over their first 12 games after dropping two of three at home to Tampa Bay.

That’s currently good for second in the American League West, a half-game behind the defending World Series champion Rangers.

With Shohei Ohtani’s departure, expectations are quite low for Los Angeles. The Angels are projected for just 71.5 wins, fifth fewest in the majors.

As such, they are +850 longshots to make the playoffs, something they’ve done just once in Trout’s first 14 MLB seasons. Their last appearance was in the 2014 Divisional Series when they were swept by Kansas City.

Keeping Trout healthy is paramount for the Angels’ postseason hopes. He was the preseason AL MVP favorite every year from 2013-21, winning the award in 2014, 2016 and 2019. But at 20/1, Trout entered this MLB season facing his longest preseason odds in over a decade.

Injuries Loom Over Sox

Boston is looking to rebound after getting swept at home by Baltimore. The Orioles outscored them 23-10 over the three MLB games, including 9-4 in 10 innings on Thursday.

Its 7-6 start has sparked some optimism, but Boston will obviously need to pick up the pace to compete in the loaded AL East. The Red Sox are projected for just 77.5 wins, easily the fewest in the division. As such, they are also just +275 to make the MLB playoffs.

Boston is punchy offensively, but only if Rafael Devers is healthy. The All-Star third baseman has been bothered by a nagging shoulder injury, which kept him out of Thursday’s lineup.

Devers is unlikely to return Friday, and manager Alex Cora has not ruled out a trip to the injured list to manage the ailment. Devers is off to a 7-for-38 start at the plate with two homers.

It’s the latest concern for the Red Sox, who have already lost shortstop Trevor Story (shoulder) and pitcher Lucas Giolito (elbow) for the season with injuries. They also placed pitcher Nick Pivetta (elbow) on the MLB injured list.

Series Probables

Game 1

  • Friday, 7:10 p.m. ET
  • Reid Detmers vs Tanner Houck

Detmers tossed a gem against Boston his last time out, striking out 12 over six innings in a 2-1 win on April 6. The 24-year-old southpaw is already 2-0 this season, having allowed only two runs over 11 frames.

The Red Sox will counter with Houck, who is off to an equally impressive start per MLB rankings. Houck has thrown 12 scoreless innings to begin the season, during which he has struck out 17 and walked just two. He blanked Los Angeles for six innings in a 12-2 victory on April 7.

Game 2

  • Saturday, 4:10 p.m. ET
  • Griffin Canning vs Undecided

Canning was hit hard in his first two starts, allowing nine runs on 12 hits over 9.2 innings. He gave up four runs over 4.2 innings in an 8-6 loss to Boston on April 5.

The Red Sox have yet to announce a starter opposite Canning, which is important to remember when analyzing the odds in our Angels vs Red Sox preview.

Game 3

  • Sunday, 1:35 p.m. ET
  • Tyler Anderson vs Brayan Bello

Anderson threw seven shutout innings in each of his first two starts, allowing a combined eight hits. He will face Bello, who has allowed nine runs (seven earned) over 15.1 innings in his first three starts.
